Trusted by more than 800 of the world's leading enterprises, Astronomer lets businesses do more with their data. To learn more, visit www.astronomer.io. About The Role We are seeking an exceptional Principal Software Engineer to provide technical leadership, architectural vision, and team mentorship for our core engineering group. In this role, you will be the primary architect and public face of a cloud-agnostic software platform that helps enterprise customers provision, scale, and orchestrate Apache Airflow instances completely on-premises within their own environments. This is a unique infrastructure challenge: our platform is designed to be completely self-contained, operating without reliance on an external SaaS backbone or mandatory outbound communication. Both our control plane and data planes deploy locally inside the customer’s infrastructure. You will lead the engineering team in defining, designing, and building these systems to function reliably across a spectrum of enterprise network setups—ranging from standard customer-managed clouds to strictly isolated, air-gapped environments. What You'll Do - Define, Design, and Build Core Architecture: Own the end-to-end definition, design, and implementation of both the control plane and data plane services, creating highly resilient inter-connections between them to power this self-contained infrastructure platform. - Architect an Extensible Platform API: Drive the design, data modeling, versioning, and long-term backward compatibility of robust APIs (such as REST or gRPC). These APIs serve as the core platform engine that power the customer-facing UI, and the developer endpoints for customer-facing programmatic integrations. - Design Comprehensive Platform Observability: Architect the telemetry framework (metrics, logs, and traces) for the self-contained platform itself, ensuring deep visibility into both the core control plane services and the performance, health, and status of the underlying Airflow instances it provisions. - Architect for Varied Isolation Levels: Oversee the architecture of a self-contained software platform, ensuring all services, images, dependencies, and configurations can run smoothly whether deployed in connected private clouds or highly secure, zero-egress networks. - Provide Technical Leadership: Act as the technical face of the team, translating complex enterprise infrastructure needs into execution roadmaps while aligning closely with product management and executive stakeholders. - Mentor and Elevate: Foster a culture of engineering and operational excellence through comprehensive design reviews, high-leverage code contributions, and direct career mentorship for senior engineers. What You'll Bring - Extensive Infrastructure Experience: 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a significant track record operating at a Staff, Senior Staff, or Principal level within an enterprise infrastructure, database-as-a-service (DBaaS), or private cloud organization. - Control Plane & API Productization: Proven success building production-grade infrastructure control planes, with a deep understanding of API design principles required to support programmatic customer workflows and user interfaces. - Cloud-Native Observability Expertise: Practical experience designing and implementing infrastructure observability stacks (e.g., Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, Grafana) to capture, aggregate, and surface system health and workflow data within isolated environments. - Strong Kubernetes Foundation: Solid operational knowledge and architectural understanding of container orchestration platforms, specifically Kubernetes. You have practical experience building custom Kubernetes Operators (CRDs), managing Helm deployments, and working with the Kubernetes API to orchestrate application lifecycles. - Hybrid Cloud Architecture: Hands-on systems design expertise involving isolated environments across multiple public cloud providers (AWS, GCP, Azure), Red Hat OpenShift enterprise deployments, and bare-metal on-premise infrastructure. - Advanced Coding & Systems Design: Expert-level software development skills (e.g., Go, Python, TypeScript) with deep knowledge of distributed state stores (such as Etcd, Consul, or PostgreSQL), concurrency, and network security patterns. - Top-Notch Technical Communication: Exceptional oral and written communication skills with a proven ability to author crisp, high-density technical "one-pagers" and actionable RFCs. You can drive fast organizational alignment by distilling complex systems choices into brief, highly readable documents, presenting confidently to executive leadership, and engaging deeply with strategic enterprise clients to unearth their core infrastructure requirements. The estimated salary for this role ranges from $277,000 - $390,000 based on leveling and geography, along with an equity component and a comprehensive benefits package. This range is merely an estimate; actual compensation may deviate from this range based on skills, experience, and qualifications. At Astronomer, we value diversity. Lead IT operations team, manage service desk and vendor relationships, and ensure operational efficiency. | 5+ years IT operations or systems administration experience with people management and SLA proficiency required. | POSITION SUMMARY The Manager of IT Operations owns day-to-day operations management, SLA performance, and people leadership for the IT Operations team. Today, a small group of generalists (service desk, endpoint, identity, and platform work all bundled into the same people) reports up to a Senior Director who is also responsible for security, AI governance, and executive stakeholder management. This role closes that gap so the team gets focused coaching, prioritization, and operating rhythm, and so the Senior Director can stay focused on governance and cross-functional strategy instead of tactical operations escalations. This role inherits full people-management responsibility for the existing IT Operations engineers (the current IT Operations engineers, including offshore contractors). ROLE PURPOSE * Provide dedicated, full-time people management and operational leadership to team. * Own service desk SLA performance and the health of the operational backlog. * Give the IT Operations Lead a manager to escalate to. * Reduce interrupt-driven context-switching by owning prioritization and triage decisions at the team level. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 1. PEOPLE MANAGEMENT & TEAM LEADERSHIP * Conduct regular one-on-ones, set individual performance expectations, and deliver formal feedback, including performance improvement plans and disciplinary action when warranted. * Build a team operating rhythm: stand-ups, backlog reviews, incident reviews, and coverage planning. * Support the IT Operations Lead's technical and operational coordination work while retaining final accountability for personnel outcomes. 2. SERVICE DESK & SLA OWNERSHIP * Own service-level performance for the ITDESK queue: time to first response, time to resolution, backlog age, and satisfaction. * Identify patterns behind missed targets and drive process, tooling, staffing, or documentation changes to correct them. * Ensure clean handoffs between frontline support, IT engineers, Security, People Experience, and other cross-functional partners. 3. OPERATIONAL BACKLOG & DELIVERY MANAGEMENT * Own the IT Operations backlog: prioritization, sequencing, and tradeoffs when demand exceeds capacity. * Track delivery of operational projects (SaaS rollouts/retirements, office technology changes, workflow automation) to completion. * Communicate delivery risk, resourcing constraints, and priority conflicts to the Senior Director before they become escalations. 4. ENDPOINT, IDENTITY, AND SAAS OPERATIONS OVERSIGHT * Provide management oversight of endpoint/hardware lifecycle, identity and access provisioning/deprovisioning, and SaaS administration performed by the team. * Partner closely with the Sr. IT Engineer (IAM & Platform) on identity governance, entitlement reviews, and platform administration priorities. * Ensure onboarding/offboarding SLAs are met and exceptions are tracked and resolved. 5. INCIDENT COORDINATION & ESCALATION * Serve as the management escalation point for operational incidents that exceed the IT Operations Lead's authority or require cross-functional or vendor coordination. * Ensure recurring incidents receive root-cause analysis and are tracked to remediation. * Escalate security-relevant findings to the Director of Information Security promptly. 6. VENDOR & SAAS MANAGEMENT * Own vendor relationship management for IT Operations-administered platforms (Okta, Google Workspace, Slack, Zoom, endpoint management tools, etc.). * Support contract renewal preparation with usage, cost, and risk data. * Drive license rightsizing and cost-control initiatives. 7. TEAM STRUCTURE & GROWTH PLANNING * Partner with the Senior Director on sequencing and justifying future IT Operations hires (Service Desk Lead, Tools & Automation Engineer, additional platform engineers) as the team's target structure is built out. 8. Own and manage identity and access management systems including Okta and Atlassian platforms to ensure secure operations. | Require 5+ years IT engineering with focus on IAM, Okta, Atlassian tools, SAML/SSO, and automation scripting. | POSITION SUMMARY This role owns identity and access management (Okta and adjacent identity tooling) and Atlassian/Jira/Confluence platform administration as dedicated, full-time disciplines. It exists to create a specialist role who can get ahead of configurations, designing for scale, and closing any identity gaps (entitlement configurations, contractor and non-employee access, and access-automation). ROLE PURPOSE * Own identity and access management as a full-time discipline: SSO, entitlement governance, and access automation. * Own Atlassian/Jira/Confluence as dedicated platform administration, including the ITDESK project that every team at Fetch depends on. * Identify, propose and implement improvements. * Get ahead of platform and identity risk through architecture and automation, rather than reacting to incidents after they occur. * Provide senior technical depth that the current generalist model cannot sustain. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 1. IDENTITY & ACCESS MANAGEMENT (OKTA) * Own configuration and administration of Okta SSO, MFA policy, and lifecycle workflows (onboarding, offboarding, role changes). * Own entitlement governance: design and run periodic access reviews, identify and remediate stale or excess access, and close gaps that allowed past entitlement misconfigurations. * Own contractor and non-employee access governance, including time-bound access, approval workflows, and offboarding enforcement. * Integrate and manage third-party application SSO connections; troubleshoot identity-related issues escalated from the team. * Maintain security compliance for identity systems in partnership with Information Security. 2. ACCESS AUTOMATION & RISK REDUCTION * Build and maintain automated workflows for provisioning, deprovisioning, and access review (e.g., via Okta workflows, or adjacent automation tooling) to reduce manual access administration. * Investigate and close automation gaps. * Partner with Information Security on broader architectural patterns and help remediate patterns in IT-administered systems. 3. ATLASSIAN SUITE PLATFORM ADMINISTRATION * Own Jira project configuration, workflows, permission schemes, and automation rules. * Administer Confluence spaces, permissions, and documentation standards. * Support Bitbucket configuration and access where applicable. * Design for scale and plan platform architecture proactively rather than administering reactively. 4. PLATFORM & IDENTITY ARCHITECTURE * Evaluate and recommend new tooling, integrations, or automation that improve identity governance or platform scalability. * Maintain technical documentation for identity and platform systems sufficient for audit, onboarding, and incident response. 5. CROSS-FUNCTIONAL PARTNERSHIP * Partner with Information Security on identity-related risk, audit evidence, and remediation of access-related findings. * Partner with the Manager of IT Operations on prioritization, escalation, and coordination with the rest of the IT Operations team. * Serve as the technical point of contact for identity and Atlassian platform questions across the company. 6. DOCUMENTATION & CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT * Maintain clear, current documentation for identity workflows, access policies, and platform configuration. * Identify recurring manual work in identity or platform administration and drive it toward automation or self-service. * Contribute to access request, approval, and audit workflow improvements. DECISION RIGHTS Within established security and platform standards, this role is authorized to: * Configure and modify Okta and Atlassian platform settings within approved change-management practices. * Design and implement access automation workflows. * Recommend and prioritize platform architecture changes. * Flag and pause changes that present apparent identity or platform risk pending review. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS * 5+ years in IT engineering or systems administration with a concentration in identity and access management and/or SaaS platform administration. * Direct hands-on experience administering Okta in a production environment, including SSO, MFA, and lifecycle automation. * Direct experience administering Atlassian tools (Jira, Confluence) at an organizational scale, including workflow and permission design. * Working knowledge of SAML/SSO concepts and access governance practices. * Familiarity with scripting, automation tooling, and API/webhook-based integrations. * Strong documentation habits and ability to work independently on platform architecture decisions. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS * Experience remediating identity-related security incidents or entitlement misconfigurations. * Experience with JumpCloud, Google Workspace admin, or AWS IAM. * Experience designing access review or automated deprovisioning programs. * B.S. in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent experience. * Relevant certifications (Okta Certified Administrator, Atlassian certifications, or equivalent). CORE COMPETENCIES * Deep technical ownership of high-blast-radius systems * Proactive risk identification and architecture-first thinking * Automation-first problem solving * Independent judgment and prioritization * Cross-functional partnership with Security and IT leadership * Documentation discipline
