Define technical direction and architectural vision while driving engineering strategy and mentoring senior engineers. | 14+ years software engineering experience with proven technical leadership and expertise in distributed systems and API design. | About Pantheon Pantheon brings together exceptional builders who take ownership, drive meaningful impact, and shape what's next for the web. We power more than 300,000 websites globally for organizations including Google, Princeton, Salesloft, Clorox, and the United Nations. Every day, thousands of developers and marketers use our WebOps platform to build, iterate, and scale WordPress, Drupal, and Next.js sites that reach billions of people worldwide. As an employer, we operate with the same philosophy that drives our product: foundation and freedom. Pantheon is a vibrant, remote-forward team of experts who care deeply about their craft and results. Here, you take ownership of work that matters, contribute alongside exceptional people, and see the impact you create. The Role We are looking for a Principal Engineer to provide technical leadership for P1 and help define engineering strategy and best practices across Pantheon. P1 is a zero-to-one product at the intersection of real-time collaboration, visual editing, web application infrastructure, developer experience, AI-assisted workflows, content management, and governed publishing. The product must make it possible for multiple roles—and increasingly, AI agents—to work in parallel without compromising reliability, security, accessibility, brand standards, or the live site. This is a high-leverage individual contributor role. You will remain hands-on while operating across product and organizational boundaries: shaping architecture, resolving the hardest technical decisions, establishing engineering standards, and helping teams build a production-ready platform that can evolve safely. What You Will Do Define P1’s technical direction Own and evolve the architectural vision for P1 across real-time collaboration, branch-aware content state, APIs, data models, visual editing, publishing, integrations, and developer-facing extension points. Establish clear architectural boundaries between P1, Pantheon’s hosting and platform capabilities, and external systems. Make pragmatic build-versus-buy and platform-boundary decisions using explicit criteria for customer value, reliability, security, operational complexity, developer experience, and total cost of ownership. Identify architectural risks early, make tradeoffs explicit, and ensure decisions are documented, communicated, and revisited when evidence changes. Create an architecture that supports fast MVP delivery without locking the company into avoidable long-term constraints. Drive company-wide engineering strategy Partner with engineering, product, design, security, infrastructure, support, and go-to-market leaders to define technical strategy for capabilities that span multiple organizations. Translate company and product goals into a coherent engineering strategy, including sequencing, investment areas, platform responsibilities, and measurable outcomes. Help establish common engineering principles for reliability, security, privacy, observability, API design, testing, deployment, incident response, and operational ownership. Define when engineering standards should be centralized, when teams should have autonomy, and how exceptions are evaluated and recorded. Create lightweight mechanisms for cross-team technical alignment, such as architecture reviews, decision records, reference patterns, technical roadmaps, and dependency planning. Represent engineering in company-level discussions where technical choices affect customer experience, product strategy, operating cost, or delivery risk. Raise the engineering quality bar Establish practical best practices for designing, building, testing, deploying, and operating production software. Promote reliability-by-design: service ownership, clear SLOs, actionable telemetry, safe migrations, failure-mode analysis, graceful degradation, retry safety, idempotency, and tested rollback paths. Improve the consistency and quality of design documents, technical proposals, API contracts, code reviews, test strategies, and release plans. Help teams distinguish reversible decisions from durable commitments and match review depth to the risk of the decision. Set expectations for secure defaults, least-privilege access, dependency management, threat modeling, and responsible use of AI in engineering workflows and product capabilities. Use operational data, customer impact, incident learning, and delivery signals to guide improvements rather than relying on opinion or process for its own sake. Build technical leverage across teams Mentor Staff and Senior engineers through architecture reviews, design sessions, pairing, code reviews, and direct feedback. Help engineers grow their ability to reason about system boundaries, tradeoffs, operational risk, and customer impact. Build reusable patterns, libraries, templates, documentation, and paved paths that make the right engineering behavior easier. Reduce duplicated discovery and inconsistent implementation across teams by making important technical context easy to find and apply. Contribute hands-on code where it is the best way to validate an architectural direction, unblock a critical path, or establish a reference implementation. Strengthen the technical hiring bar and help design interview signals for senior and principal-level engineering impact. Partner with product and customers Work closely with product and design to turn ambiguous product problems into technically coherent, phased delivery plans. Push back on scope, sequencing, or technical assumptions when the data indicates customer, reliability, or execution risk. Participate in selected customer, partner, and internal technical discussions to understand real-world constraints and validate architectural choices. Ensure that developer experience, content-team experience, and operational experience are treated as first-class product concerns. What You Bring 14+ years of professional software engineering experience, or equivalent depth demonstrated through sustained technical impact. A track record of acting as a Principal Engineer, Chief Architect or equivalent technical leader across multiple teams and products. Experience defining technical strategy for a complex product, platform, or distributed system from early architecture through production operation. Strong systems thinking and the ability to reason across frontend, backend, APIs, data, infrastructure, security, and operations. Experience with distributed, event-driven, real-time, collaborative, or stateful systems. Demonstrated judgment in build-versus-buy decisions, platform boundaries, technical investment, and managing technical debt. Deep experience with production reliability, observability, incident response, safe delivery, and operational ownership. Strong API and integration design experience, including versioning, compatibility, authentication, authorization, webhooks, or extension models. The ability to write clear design documents and explain complex tradeoffs to engineers, executives, product partners, customers, and non-technical stakeholders. A history of mentoring senior engineers and influencing technical direction without relying on formal authority. Comfort working in ambiguity, moving between strategy and implementation, and changing direction when evidence warrants it. Experience using AI-assisted engineering tools thoughtfully, with attention to quality, security, auditability, and failure handling. Helpful Experience Real-time collaboration, multiplayer systems, CRDTs, operational transformation, synchronization, or conflict resolution. Visual editors, page builders, content platforms, CMS products, web publishing, developer tooling, SDKs, or plugin ecosystems. Cloud-native systems built on platforms such as GCP, AWS, or Cloudflare. Modern web application architecture using technologies such as TypeScript, Node.js, React, Next.js, or comparable ecosystems. Multi-tenant SaaS products with strong requirements for governance, security, availability, and customer isolation. Leading technical strategy across teams during a zero-to-one product launch or a significant platform transformation. Why This Role Matters P1’s most consequential technical decisions cross normal team boundaries. The Principal Engineer will provide the connective tissue between product ambition and engineering execution: ensuring that P1 can move quickly while maintaining architectural coherence, operational safety, and a foundation that the rest of Pantheon can build on. This role is ideal for an engineer who wants broad technical impact without leaving the work behind—someone who can set direction across the company, earn trust through sound judgment, and still open the editor, inspect the trace, review the pull request, or write the critical piece of code. What We Offer We have all the usual perks and benefits but what we can really offer you is a fantastic work environment powered by an amazing team. Own and improve the end-to-end signup-to-activation experience using AI-driven solutions to enhance customer onboarding. | 10+ years software engineering experience with full-stack expertise and AI/LLM application in customer-facing products. | About Gusto At Gusto, we're on a mission to grow the small business economy. We handle the hard stuff — payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR — so owners can focus on their craft and their customers. With teams in Denver, San Francisco, and New York, we support more than 500,000 small businesses nationwide and are building a workplace that reflects the people we serve. All full-time employees receive competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs) — because everyone who helps build Gusto should share in its success. Offer amounts are determined by role, level, and location. Learn more about our Total Rewards philosophy. AI is a fundamental part of how work gets done at Gusto. We expect all team members to actively engage with AI tools relevant to their role and grow their fluency as the technology evolves. AI experience requirements vary by role and will be assessed during the interview process. About the Role: Getting started on Gusto should feel effortless — the path from "I just signed up" to “my business is set up and running on Gusto” is where small business owners need us most, and where the biggest opportunity to grow the business lives. We're in the middle of the most exciting shift in Gusto's history: reimagining our product as a proactive AI teammate that doesn't just help small businesses, but does the work for them. Most of that opportunity is still ahead of us — which means this role is full of net-new, 0-to-1 problems to invent and build from the ground up. As a Staff Product Engineer on Growth Onboarding, you'll own the experience that turns curious signups into activated, thriving customers — taking friction out of getting started and meeting customers wherever they are, from the web to SMS, WhatsApp, and third-party AI assistants like ChatGPT and Claude — working full-stack and cross-functionally as both a product builder and a founder. About the Team: Growth Onboarding owns one of the most consequential moments in a customer's journey: their first experience of Gusto. We're a full-stack, outcome-driven team measured by activation — not features shipped. We move fast, ship prototypes over docs, and partner tightly with Product, Design, Data, and other engineering teams to make onboarding simpler, smarter, and a launchpad for everything a business does next. You won't just be handed a roadmap — you'll help invent it, turning a bold AI product vision into new front doors and experiences that have never existed before. If you want your work to move a top-line number and shape the front door to a company serving 500,000+ businesses, this is the team. Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day: Own meaningful slices of the signup-to-activation experience end to end — from data model to UI — and ship measurable improvements to how quickly and reliably new customers get up and running. Invent and prototype net-new, 0-to-1 experiences — bringing your own ideas for how AI can reimagine onboarding, not just implementing a spec handed to you. Partner directly with Product, Design, and Data to frame problems, form hypotheses, and validate them with real customers in weeks, not quarters. Identify where AI meaningfully removes customer effort (and where a simple form is better), and build those experiences thoughtfully into the flow. Design onboarding as modular, reusable building blocks so new entry points into Gusto can be added quickly without rebuilding the foundation. Raise the engineering bar through pragmatic technical direction, high-quality code, strong reviews, and mentoring engineers around you. Make sharp scoping calls under a time box — shipping the simplest version that proves or disproves an idea, then iterating. Here’s what we're looking for: 10+ years of software engineering experience, including building and shipping customer-facing products at scale. A product-minded engineer who starts from the customer problem and the metric that matters, not just the ticket — and who can operate independently across product, design, and data partners. Demonstrated ability to move fast and execute with high quality: someone who ships, measures, and iterates rather than waiting for perfect certainty. Experience applying AI/LLM capabilities to real product problems — with the judgment to know where it adds value and where it adds noise — and a habit of using AI tools to work more effectively. A founder mindset: high ownership, comfort with ambiguity and greenfield problems, and a bias toward action and outcomes over output. A track record of raising the bar for teams around you — through technical leadership, mentorship, and setting standards others follow. Strong full-stack fundamentals and the versatility to work wherever the problem is (front end, back end, data). Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $223,000/yr to $278,000/yr for San Francisco. Stock equity is additional. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above. Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto's subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale. Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas. When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required. This includes non-office days for hybrid employees. Our customers come from all walks of life and so do we. We hire great people from a wide variety of backgrounds, not just because it's the right thing to do, but because it makes our company stronger. If you share our values and our enthusiasm for small businesses, you will find a home at Gusto. Gusto is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We do not discriminate in hiring or any employment decision based on race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex (including pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions), marital status, ancestry, physical or mental disability, genetic information, veteran status, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, or other applicable legally protected characteristic. Gusto considers qualified applicants with criminal histories, consistent with applicable federal, state and local law. Gusto is also committed to providing reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals with disabilities and disabled veterans in our job application procedures. We want to see our candidates perform to the best of their ability. If you require a medical or religious accommodation at any time throughout your candidate journey, please fill out this form and a member of our team will get in touch with you. Gusto takes security and protection of your personal information very seriously. Please review our Fraudulent Activity Disclaimer. Personal information collected and processed as part of your Gusto application will be subject to Gusto's Applicant Privacy Notice.
Define architecture, shape product direction, own systems end-to-end, and build AI workflows. | 5+ years full-stack engineering experience with strong backend fundamentals and ability to design production systems. | Overview Hi 👋 I’m Stephen, Co-Founder and CTO at Tightknit. We are on a mission to revolutionize online communities with an innovative platform built for trust, engagement, and connection, especially meeting members where they are within an app they already love: Slack. Tightknit powers customer and developer communities for teams like Clay, MotherDuck, Mixpanel, Vanta, Gamma, and Stripe. Our vision is to make communities a bastion of genuine human relationship and the OS for every business’s sales & marketing team. And we are hiring our first Founding Engineer to help us build that future! As an early engineer, you will: Work directly with the CTO Define architecture, not just implement it Shape product direction, not just execute it Own systems end-to-end (design → implementation → monitoring → iteration) Interact directly with customers Build internal AI workflows to accelerate our velocity Help determine how engineering operates here Wear many hats and operate independently with high accountability This isn’t just a coding role. It is a seat at the table. In fact, while programming knowledge matters, in the AI age it’s becoming less and less central to our day-to-day work. So who are we really looking for? Engineer with taste - Put away the IDE for a moment and put on your PM hat. We trust in your ability to talk to customers, synthesize their asks, and create excellent products with extreme level of thoughtfulness and detail. You hold yourself and your work to a high bar. Engineer who can design - You don’t need to be a front-end wizard (although we’d love if you are!), but you have a good eye for distinguishing good vs. bad UX. Don’t expect sloppiness in any area of the stack to be fixed by someone else. Engineer who can manage - Everyone now has access to an army of digital employees and the best programmers on earth. Can you effectively use them to multiply yourself and our team? Oh and did we mention, everyone at Tightknit is a community manager! 🙌 What We're Looking For This is a staff-level role, so we require at least 5+ years of experience as a full-time full-stack engineer. You must possess strong backend engineering fundamentals and experience designing production systems. Experience at an early-stage startup or working directly with founders is strongly preferred. Experience delivering enterprise products is a bonus. Smarter, Better, Faster, Stronger We believe every hire either makes us “smarter” (fills in our weak spots) or “stronger” (adds fuel to our strengths), or both! For this role, we will be honing in especially on candidates whose skills make us smarter. Here’s a fun visual of where we think our team’s strengths / preferences currently lie: Front-End 🟪🟪🟪🟪🟪 / 🟦🟦🟦🟦⬜ Back-End 🟪🟪🟪⬜⬜ / 🟦🟦🟦🟦🟦 Infra/Ops 🟪🟪🟪⬜⬜ / 🟦🟦🟦🟦⬜ API 🟪🟪🟪🟪⬜ / 🟦🟦🟦🟦⬜ Perf 🟪🟪🟪⬜⬜ / 🟦🟦🟦🟦⬜ Security 🟪🟪🟪🟪⬜ / 🟦🟦🟦🟦⬜ Database 🟪🟪⬜⬜⬜ / 🟦🟦🟦🟦🟦 Humility 🟪🟪🟪🟪⬜ / 🟦🟦🟦🟦⬜ ^us ^you?? Technology Stack You do not need to know all of these perfectly on day one, but you must be able to learn quickly. Interview Process Intro Call (30 minutes) - get to know each other, brag about how many LLM tokens you use, we demo Tightknit, etc. Technical Screen (1 hour) Open-Ended Technical Exercise (2 hours) - pair programming simulation, open-ended exercises Founders Call(s) (30 minutes) - hear our vision, make sure you like us and we like you and you are not a sociopath thank you! 🤍 Reach out to References - we may ask you for references, so others may also confirm you are indeed not a sociopath Compatibility Check SuperDay (typically 1 day) - paid work trial, designed as a mutual compatibility check so you can see what it’s like to work with us (and we can learn what it’s like to work with you). This is a pragmatic test of fit that ensures everyone is genuinely excited about the partnership. It is not designed as a technical test. SuperDay The final stage of our process is what we call a SuperDay. This is typically one paid full day of work with us, which we can flexibly arrange around the candidate's schedule. The goal is a mutual compatibility check so all of us can get a real sense of what it’d be like to work together. The SuperDay may be done remotely or in person if nearby one of our co-working spaces. We are not able to bypass this stage so if the candidate is not interested in doing this final step, unfortunately we will have to part ways and the candidate will no longer be considered for the role. 💡We can be very flexible with scheduling! For example, we can split the SuperDay into half-days, do it in the evenings, or schedule it on a weekend as needed. The candidate will be working on mock tasks similar to the real-world day-to-day work someone in this role does at Tightknit. They will also have the chance to meet a few of their potential direct team members, and if they haven’t already, our founders. This gives the candidate a chance to show off their skills, and for us to see the quality, speed and communication of the candidate. Overall, the candidate should aim to spend at least 80% of their time and energy on the task and less than 20% on meeting people, as we will base our decision primarily on the output of the day. We pay all candidates a flat rate of $500 USD for their SuperDay efforts. On rare occasions, if we have to cancel a scheduled SuperDay arrangement because we have filled the role with another candidate who was further advanced in the process, we will pay a $250 USD term fee to the candidate for their efforts up until that point. If the candidate is unable to accept payment for the SuperDay, we will donate the amount to an agreed upon charity of their choice. As a part of the SuperDay arrangement, you will be asked to sign an NDA / CLA and may be provided with a mocked and/or siloed codebase. Your First Two Months at Tightknit Week 1–2 Complete your SuperDay. Join the Slack customer community and see how real users think. Form strong opinions about our architecture, product gaps, and velocity constraints. Release a small to medium-sized feature. Improve something meaningful. Ship production code. Weeks 3–4 Own a scoped but consequential project end-to-end. Propose improvements to our systems (engineering, AI workflows, APIs, performance, etc.). Start shaping how engineering should operate here — not just participating in it. Month 2 Lead a cross-cutting initiative (integration, refactor, reliability improvement, new surface area). Have direct customer conversations. Make at least one architectural decision that meaningfully improves our trajectory. By the end of two months, success looks like this: You’ve taken full ownership of at least one initiative. You’ve earned trust through action and follow-through. You’ve helped us move faster without lowering our standards. You’re clearly operating as a founder-level multiplier — not waiting to be told what to do, but defining what should exist next. You wake up excited to come work alongside this team! What you might work on Our integrations platform which connects into numerous different applications where customer engagement can happen Our embedding & retrieval architecture, powering our intelligence layer and unified semantic and keyword search Our AI agent for community programming Benefits Competitive salary and equity. 10-year exercise window for stock options. You shouldn’t feel pressure to purchase stock options if you leave Tightknit. Do it when you feel financially comfortable. Unlimited PTO, and we will encourage you to take it. A minimum of 8 weeks of fully paid parental leave. Generous budget for equipment, software, and ergonomics. Get what you need to be happy and productive! $100/month community membership and education budget, with more expensive items (like conferences) covered with manager approval. Membership to a co-working space if you are located in SF or NYC. If you’re in the US, we offer top-tier health insurance for you and your dependents, with Tightknit covering 100% of the premiums. In other countries, we provide high-quality supplemental health insurance for you and your dependents, also fully covered by us. We might be a startup, but we do not think that way. Our success hinges on great people and on creating an environment where they can be happy and healthy while feeling challenged to do their best work. We are intentional about the environment we want to create, and we hope this excites you to join us. Also, we love otters here. 🦦
