Primary purpose: Provides consulting services, data management, and statistical analysis for CDC’s National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN). Leverages analytical expertise and public-health knowledge to deliver actionable insights. A successful candidate will do the following: Manage end-to-end data analysis, including accessing and cleaning data from multiple sources, conducting statistical analyses, and ensuring the accuracy and quality of deliverables. Use R and Python for data cleaning and analysis and adhere to high-quality coding standards. Perform in-depth analyses to derive insights and support actionable reporting. Communicate statistical methodology and analytic findings to stakeholders. Develop clear, informative visualizations to convey key findings. Write and present results tailored to both technical and non-technical audiences. Collaborate in the planning, development, and implementation of projects and related materials. Work independently to manage timelines and deliverables; escalate or collaborate as necessary according to best judgement. Translate client needs into formal requirements and actionable plans. Apply a range of analytical methods (e.g., descriptive, inferential, predictive) depending on project needs. Support senior statisticians with ad-hoc requests. Stay current with industry trends, software advancements, and best practices in public health and analytics. Develop innovative solutions, collaborate across teams, and foster continuous improvement. Requirements Bachelor’s degree and at least six (6) years of relevant experience in Statistics, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Public Health, or related field; or master’s degree and at least four (4) years of relevant experience Proficiency using R or Python for importing, manipulating, and analyzing data, including evaluating data quality and accuracy Experience managing large data sets, merging files from different platforms, cleaning and aggregating data, and performing quality control Experience in quality-assurance or user-acceptance testing of healthcare data Strong attention to detail and critical thinking skills Ability to work independently on some tasks, with general supervision or guidance on others Ability to successfully complete a Position of Public Trust Level 5 background investigation Preferred qualifications: Master’s degree in Epidemiology, Public Health, Biostatistics, Mathematics, or related field Experience with analytic programming languages in addition to R and Python Experience with Databricks, PowerBI, or similar platforms[BL1.1][TJ1.2] Experience importing a variety of data types (including XML, JSON, CSV, and XLSX) into analytic software (such as R or Python) Proficiency creating data visualizations Experience working with healthcare data sets, including standards for healthcare terminology (such as LOINC, SNOMED, and RxNorm) and clinical concepts Knowledge of and/or experience with large data-set analysis for CDC, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, or other public-health entity Knowledge of and/or experience with clinical workflow concepts, public health, or healthcare delivery Additional information: We are a remote organization, but we prioritize in-person collaboration during key events such as our annual company meeting. Focuses on scaling and integrating both front-end and back-end systems, enhancing software applications, developing data-driven solutions, and contributing to scalable ETL workflows. Collaborates with cross-functional teams to deliver high quality, data-driven solutions. A successful candidate will do the following: • Use Angular, TypeScript, Storybook, JavaScript, and Bootstrap to develop responsive front-end components that are deployable via Apache HTTP Server • Develop, test, and maintain robust backend systems using Spring Boot, Java, and Python • Leverage tools such as Apache Spark to create and optimize ETL pipelines to process and transform large datasets • Design and optimize queries and data models for both relational and NoSQL databases to support analytics and transactional workflows • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deploy Cloud-based solutions like Lambda and Fargate, primarily on AWS • Implement and support event-driven architectures and messaging protocols to enable high-throughput distributed systems • Follow standards such as OpenAPI and use tools like Swagger to design, implement, and document RESTful APIs • Contribute to full-stack application development (including server-side rendering) using Node.js and Next.js • Implement data-visualization tools and dashboards • Debug and resolve complex issues using structured problem-solving techniques, logs, and monitoring tools • Continuously evaluate and apply tools, frameworks, and development practices Requirements • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field • A minimum of seven (7) years of professional experience in software engineering, with hands-on development across front-end and back-end systems • Demonstrated experience with ETL tools, RESTful APIs, and development frameworks including Angular, Node.js, Next.js, and Spring Boot • Proficiency in JavaScript, Java, and Python for full-stack application development • Experience with Storybook and Bootstrap for component-based UI development • Familiarity with Apache HTTP Server for application serving and configuration • Strong understanding of API design standards such as OpenAPI and tools like Swagger • Hands-on experience with Cloud platforms, preferably AWS (Fargate, Lambda, and related services); exposure to Azure or Google Cloud is a plus • Experience with Apache Spark for data processing and ETL pipeline development • Proficiency in Git and version-control workflows • Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments, with proven ability to contribute to team ceremonies and deliverables • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to debug and resolve complex issues in distributed systems • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with a track record of effective teamwork across cross-functional teams • Ability to successfully complete a Position of Public Trust Level 5 background investigation Preferred qualifications: • Experience working on federal initiatives in health IT, particularly those involving clinical quality measurement, healthcare-data standards, or public-health reporting requirements • Familiarity with FHIR, CQL, eCQMs, or similar healthcare interoperability standards and clinical quality measurement specifications • Prior experience supporting data integration, validation, or reporting workflows for large-scale healthcare or government programs • Understanding of regulatory compliance, clinical workflows, or healthcare-specific data domains (e.g., patient safety, outcomes measurement) Additional information: • We are a remote organization, but we prioritize in-person collaboration during key events such as our annual company meeting. • We are an equal-opportunity employer.
