You would build and support reusable developer platform tools and AI capabilities, partnering with engineering teams to test adoption, resolve issues, and teach enablement sessions. | The role requires a bachelor’s degree, 3–5 years of development experience, reusable CI workflows and infrastructure-as-code, developer tooling, agentic coding tools, and technical documentation. | GHX is seeking a Software Engineer III to join Developer Platform & AI Enablement, the team that builds the tooling, standards, and AI capabilities the rest of GHX core product engineering runs on. Reporting to the Director, Software Engineering, Developer Platform & AI Enablement, you’ll work on a small team whose customers are other engineers: the developers building the healthcare supply chain products that take more than a billion dollars out of the cost of delivering healthcare every year. The SWE III is responsible for analyzing, design, program, debugging, and modifying software. This role is responsible for interacting with users to define system requirements and/or necessary modifications in an Agile/Scrum environment. You’ll grow into owning a capability end to end: a surface of the GHX agent platform, an MCP server other teams depend on, or the complexity-based router that decides whether a request runs on a local model or a hosted one. This is an embedded role, you’ll spend most weeks inside a product engineering team’s repository proving out a pattern before bringing the reusable version back to the broader engineering teams. Duties and responsibilities Analyzes, designs, programs, debugs, tests, documents, releases, and supports platform capabilities end to end. Authors technical designs and architectural artifacts, and reviews the designs of peers. Develops, versions, and documents reusable GitHub Actions and composite actions used across the organization. Develops, versions, and documents reusable terraform modules (or other IaC) used across the organization. Builds and operates MCP servers over stdio and remote/HTTP transports, owning tool schema design, transport selection, and authentication. Extends our internal agent platform, including the SDK and the APIs other GHX teams build against, and contributes to local model routing. Reads and safely modifies unfamiliar codebases, including Java and Maven builds, without owning the application code. Drives defects and blockers to resolution, and writes automated tests and system test specifications. Instruments developer-facing tooling to measure adoption and extends the team’s delivery-metrics pipeline. Participates in architectural design spikes, project planning, and estimation in an Agile/Scrum environment. Co-facilitates recorded AI in Automation Office Hours remotely each week. Facilitating live sessions, both remote and in person, is an essential function of this role. Actively uses AI-powered development tools to improve productivity and code quality, and authors the agent configuration artifacts other engineers reuse. Create and maintain documentation as part of development and enablement efforts. Stay up-to-date on industry trends and best practices related to Snowflake, Python, and AWS. May mentor and onboard new team members as needed. Required Qualifications BS or MS Degree in Computer Science. Requires 3-5 years of software development experience Experience building internal tooling whose users were other engineers, with the ability to explain why a given tool was or was not adopted. Daily use of agentic coding tools — Claude Code (preferred), Copilot, Cursor, or similar. Direct experience authoring GitHub Actions at the reusable workflow or composite action level, or equivalent CI that other people consumed. Direct experience authoring Infrastructure as code. Technical writing that other engineers act on — design documents, ADRs, runbooks, or documentation you can point to. Willingness to teach live and unscripted, including co-facilitating recorded remote sessions and full-day in-person workshops. Willingness and ability to travel as needed. Must be able to work independently and as part of a team on multiple overlapping projects. Preferred Qualifications Has measured a non-deterministic system and argued from the numbers — an eval harness, a benchmark, or a rubric. Experience building and operating MCP servers, including remote/HTTP transports and auth. Comfortable deploying and debugging on AWS An agent configuration artifact you authored that another engineer used — a skill, subagent, md/AGENTS.md, or MCP tool. Experience with local or open-weight inference: Ollama, llama.cpp, or MLX, quantization tradeoffs, context and KV-cache sizing, and OpenAI-compatible shims. Experience measuring developer outcomes: adoption instrumentation, DORA-style delivery metrics, and data plumbing behind messy organizational data. Design and deliver full-stack software for healthcare supply chain products, modernize applications, and build backend services using Java and AWS. | Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent, at least five years of software development experience, and 4+ years with modern Angular plus 3+ years with Java/J2EE and AWS. | GHX is seeking a Software Engineer III with a proven track record in designing, developing, and delivering high-quality, scalable software solutions across the full stack. This role is responsible for the creation, implementation, and support of both existing and next-generation products used in the healthcare supply chain. The ideal candidate brings strong, modern Angular expertise (particularly Angular 17+), combined with solid Java and J2EE development experience, proficiency in AWS cloud services, and a firm command of CI/CD pipelines and software design patterns. Currently using AI tools to enhance software development productivity, and actively expanding that practice as the tooling evolves. Lead integration and data architecture for distributed systems, set technical direction, and establish standards across engineering teams. | 10+ years hands-on experience with distributed systems, event-driven architecture, AWS services, data architecture, REST API design, and strong communication skills. | GHX is a healthcare supply chain exchange. This role owns the long-term stewardship of both problems: how data is modeled, accessed, and owned within our services, and how it flows reliably across them. You will work directly with application teams as a hands-on technical partner and architect, setting technical direction, establishing integration and data patterns, and ensuring the architectural quality we build today does not become tomorrow's maintenance burden. What You'll DoIntegration Architecture & Event-Driven Systems • Define GHX's integration patterns: outbox, saga, CDC, event-carried state transfer, dual-write mitigation, and when to choreograph vs. orchestrate • Guide service boundary design: where to draw domain lines, how to handle shared reference data, and how to prevent shared-database coupling between services • Own the messaging and eventing layer: topic and queue design, schema contracts, partitioning, retention, consumer group management, dead-letter handling, replay, and operational monitoring • Lead the architectural direction for replacing GHX's homegrown event bus with a cloud-native messaging platform, and establish the standards teams will build on after the transition • Guide teams on streaming vs. batch trade-offs and on replacing batch- or file-driven pipelines with event-driven flows where latency and reliability require it API Design, Contracts & DevOps • Establish REST API design standards: resource modeling, versioning strategy, error contracts, pagination, and backward compatibility • Own the API governance lifecycle: versioning policy, deprecation timelines, breaking change detection in CI/CD, schema compatibility enforcement, and consumer-driven contract testing • Define traffic management patterns for API transitions: versioned routing, canary rollouts, and gateway configuration for safe rollout and rollback • Guide teams on integration style selection and review service designs for evolvability and downstream interface cost Data Architecture & Database Practice • Work with teams on schema design, data modeling, and aligning data ownership with service boundaries • Guide datastore selection by workload: read/write patterns, consistency requirements, and cost trade-offs across relational, document, key-value, and analytical options; for NoSQL, lead access-pattern-first design including partition strategy, secondary index selection, and partition distribution • Advise on ORM vs. raw query trade-offs and define data access standards that avoid common anti-patterns (N+1, chatty calls, unbounded result sets) • Guide teams on performant data access and zero-downtime schema evolution: indexing strategy, backfill approaches, dual-write windows, and rollback-safe migrations • Establish replication and syndication patterns for cross-service data movement: CDC, change streams, materialized views, and read models Enablement & Standards • Run design reviews, workshops, and office hours to raise integration and data fundamentals across engineering • Produce decision records, design guides, and reference implementations teams can build from • Present architectural trade-offs and technical risk to engineering leadership, product, and senior stakeholders Required Qualifications • 10+ years building distributed systems, grounded in hands-on software development as an individual contributor: you have written and shipped production code and understand the day-to-day engineering reality your guidance needs to hold up against • Deep experience with event-driven architecture and distributed systems: pub/sub and messaging infrastructure (Kafka, AWS SQS/SNS/EventBridge, or equivalents), integration patterns (outbox, CDC, saga, event sourcing), and failure modes including idempotency, consistency trade-offs, and operational failure handling • Hands-on AWS experience with data and integration services: SQS, SNS, EventBridge, DynamoDB, RDS/Aurora, API Gateway, Lambda • Strong data architecture fundamentals across relational and NoSQL: datastore selection by workload, schema and access-pattern design, ORM trade-offs, and performant data access at scale • Experience designing REST APIs with attention to versioning, backward compatibility, and data contracts, including contract validation in CI/CD pipelines • Experience working directly with application teams during service decomposition, and a track record of establishing integration and data standards across an engineering organization • Strong communication across levels: writing clear decision records for engineering peers, presenting trade-offs to engineering and product leadership, and translating technical risk for senior stakeholders • Heavy personal investment in AI-assisted and agentic development: your workflow has materially changed over the last 6-12 months, you use coding agents for substantial engineering work, and you have concrete examples of where these tools have made you meaningfully faster or produced better outcomes; You bring depth in both the integration layer and the data layer, and you know from experience how problems in one become problems in the other. You are a hands-on architect who succeeds by making other engineers better. You can design the event contract, identify the breaking change in an API proposal before it ships, and dig into an operational failure when it matters. You write clear decision records, give direct feedback in design reviews, and know when to push back and when to ship. You also communicate well outside engineering: you can present a build-vs-buy decision to an executive, work through a data model with a product manager, and explain reliability risk to a business stakeholder without losing the thread.
