Lead architectural decisions and implementation for global payments compliance systems ensuring regulatory adherence. | 9+ years experience, strong technical leadership, problem-solving skills, and large-scale platform development experience required. | Airbnb was born in 2007 when two hosts welcomed three guests to their San Francisco home, and has since grown to over 5 million hosts who have welcomed over 2 billion guest arrivals in almost every country across the globe. Every day, hosts offer unique stays and experiences that make it possible for guests to connect with communities in a more authentic way. The Community You Will Join: Airbnb Payments team allows any two people in the world to frictionlessly exchange money with easy to use payments services. It is a core strategy to fulfill Airbnb’s belongs anywhere mission. We are building a world-class payments platform that moves billions of dollars, in 191 countries, with 75 currencies, through a complex ecosystem of payments partners. We build and maintain our own in-house global payments platform because no solution exists with the global reach needed. As the platform grows we’ll be adding new payment partners, global licenses, compliance and regulation controls, and building new payment experiences for our guests and hosts. Airbnb’s business grows rapidly year over year, and so does Airbnb Payments’ processing volume. Payments Compliance is an essential part of the Payments organization. Without it, Airbnb can be subject to fines and even forbidden from conducting business in certain markets. As a Staff Engineer in the Payments Compliance team, you would drive architectural decisions and implementation for the Compliance systems. Drive systemic improvements by identifying patterns to streamline development, reduce toil and increase technical quality and operational excellence over time. Your Expertise: 9+ years of industry experience in a fast paced tech environment. BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent work experience. Staff Software Engineer, Passport & Commerce (Backend)

AirbnbAnywhereFull-time
View Job
Compensation$90K - 150K a year

Design and evolve core backend services and lead technical direction across the team. | Requires 9+ years experience designing and scaling complex distributed backend systems with technical leadership. The Community You Will Join: Passport & Commerce builds the trusted account and commerce foundation that lets anyone, anywhere, become part of the Airbnb community — from their first sign-up, through the profile and connections they build, to every booking and business transaction along the way. We're a newly formed org within Guest & Host that brings together identity, account, and commerce foundations under one roof. Our mission is to move Airbnb beyond the transaction — building a world where accounts create trust, value sticks, and what our community earns travels with them, and their businesses, wherever they go. You'll work closely with Payments and Wallet engineering, Identity & Privacy, Profile & Community, and Guest & Host product, design, and data science partners as we stand up this team's roadmap and technical foundations. The Difference You Will Make: As a Staff Software Engineer on the Passport team, you will be a key architect behind the next generation of our account platform, directly influencing how millions of guests and hosts experience Airbnb. You'll set technical direction for how account state, eligibility, and entitlements are computed, stored, and served at scale across every surface where a guest or host interacts with Airbnb. Success in this role looks like a Passport platform that is reliable and extensible enough to support new programs and partner integrations without re-architecture — measured through service reliability (uptime, latency, correctness of entitlement calculations), the speed at which new offerings can launch, and adoption of your platform by other teams across Airbnb. A Typical Day: Design and evolve the core services and data models that track account state, eligibility, and entitlements across millions of accounts Partner with product and design to translate new product concepts into scalable, extensible technical designs Collaborate with Payments and Wallet engineering to ensure credits, discounts, and host-funded programs settle correctly end-to-end Set technical direction and lead design reviews across a growing team, mentoring engineers and raising the bar on system design Drive cross-team architecture decisions with Identity & Privacy and Profile & Community teams to keep account state consistent with Airbnb's broader Passport model Identify and resolve reliability, scalability, and data-integrity risks before they affect guests or hosts Your Expertise: 9+ years of experience designing and scaling complex, distributed backend systems, with a proven track record of technical leadership in high-growth environments A track record as a technical leader who has set architecture direction for a team or domain — not only delivered individual features Deep expertise in distributed systems fundamentals, including data consistency, caching, service decomposition, and API design at scale Experience building or operating systems involving financial transactions, entitlements, or other stateful account data is strongly preferred Experience mentoring senior engineers and influencing technical decisions across multiple teams Comfort operating with ambiguity on a newly formed team, including helping define team scope, roadmap, and technical foundations Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience driving alignment across engineering, product, and design partners Your Location: This position is US - Remote Eligible. The role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites, as agreed to with your manager. While the position is Remote Eligible, you must live in a state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity. Click here for the up-to-date list of excluded states. The Secure Development Engineering team builds the platform that checks Airbnb's code as engineers write it. Our tooling runs in continuous integration on every pull request in our largest repositories. We are enablers, not blockers. We work closely with Developer Platform, Service Framework, Site Reliability Engineering, and our partner teams across Information Security. The Difference You Will Make This is a software engineering role first. You will design, build, and operate a platform that thousands of Airbnb engineers depend on many times a day. The platform runs tens of thousands of checks each month, and that number grows as we add repositories and languages. You do not need a background in security. We will teach you the domain. We look for engineers who build reliable systems, who care about latency and developer experience, and who like to make a slow thing fast. Success in this role looks like a platform that is faster, more reliable, and used in more places than when you joined. A Typical Day Here are a few things you will do in this role: Design, build, and operate the backend services that run our code checks inside continuous integration. You own their reliability and their latency. Scale the platform to new repositories, new languages, and new check types, and keep the integration simple for the teams that adopt it. Build and maintain the data pipelines that store results, and the dashboards that report coverage, volume, and time to fix. Design clear APIs and integration points so other engineering teams can plug into the platform without our help. Improve the developer experience. Cut noise, write useful messages, and keep the feedback loop short. Write tests, add instrumentation, and operate what you build. Support our work on AI-assisted code review. Build the evaluation datasets and the pipeline that measures output quality. Your Expertise These are examples of relevant profiles. If a subset applies to you, please apply. 3+ years of software engineering experience. You have shipped and maintained production code in at least one of the following languages: Java, Kotlin, Python, Go, JavaScript or TypeScript. Experience that you build and operate backend services or platforms that other engineers use. Experience with developer infrastructure, such as continuous integration, build systems, or monorepos. Comfort with data. You can write SQL, build a pipeline, and put the result on a dashboard. Good testing and debugging practice. You measure before you optimize. Clear written communication across teams. Experience in these areas is a bonus. None of them is required: Development of security tooling, static analysis, or dependency scanning. Knowledge of web or mobile application security. AWS configuration concepts. Measurement of output quality from large language models. Your Location: This position is US - Remote Eligible. The role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites, as agreed to with your manager. While the position is Remote Eligible, you must live in a state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity. Click here for the up-to-date list of excluded states. Software Engineer, Dev Tools

View Job
Compensation$80K - 140K a year

Design and operate developer tools and cloud platforms focusing on scalability, validation workflows, and cost optimization. | 2-4+ years experience with distributed systems, container orchestration, Go, Python, and AWS infrastructure. The Community You Will Join: Dev Tools’ mission is to help Airbnb engineers and AI agents build, validate, review, and ship high-quality software quickly, reliably, and safely. AI-assisted development is rapidly increasing the speed, volume, and concurrency of software delivery. Our team is building the infrastructure needed to support that growth - from cloud development environments and agent execution platforms to source control, code review, validation, and polyglot monorepo tooling. The Difference You Will Make: As a Software Engineer on Dev Tools, you will design, build, and operate foundational systems used across Airbnb engineering. You will work on technically challenging infrastructure problems involving distributed systems, Kubernetes, developer workflows, scalability, reliability, and cost efficiency, while partnering closely with teams across Developer Platform, DevAI, CI/CD, Cloud Infrastructure, and Security. You won't just build - you'll shape the technical direction and set the bar for craft on a small, high-impact team. High leverage: Every improvement you make is felt by every engineer at Airbnb — plus the AI agents running on behalf of those engineers. Greenfield platform work: The async agent execution platform is nascent. You'll be making foundational decisions about how it scales, not inheriting someone else's choices. Clear business stakes: Our cloud workspace costs nearly doubled in Q1 as agentic usage surged. The tradeoff between developer productivity and infrastructure spend is real, visible, and yours to influence. Small team, big scope: This is not a large-org role where your contribution gets diffused. The team is intentionally lean - your work ships and your decisions matter. A Typical Day: Build and operate cloud development environments and execution platforms for engineers and AI agents. Scale Kubernetes-based worker pools, control planes, and APIs for parallel and asynchronous workloads. Improve AirDev validation so engineers and agents can test changes quickly before CI. Strengthen source-control and code-review systems as PR volume, automation, and concurrency grow. Improve developer workflows across build, test, dependency management, and polyglot monorepo tooling. Diagnose production issues across distributed systems, networking, storage, and orchestration Setting technical direction and making high-stakes architectural decisions with significant ambiguity Mentoring engineers on the team and raising the quality bar through code review and design feedback Your Expertise: 2-4+ years of industry experience with bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree, preferably in CS, or equivalent experience Experience leading and shipping large scope technical projects in collaboration with multiple experienced engineers. You are a full-cycle developer: strong ownership and experience building and operating high-scale, distributed systems across the full software life cycle. Familiarity with container and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes. You have excellent communication skills - you can explain complex infrastructure tradeoffs to engineers at all levels and drive cross-team alignment without formal authority You are a strong problem solver and have solid debugging skills. You are passionate about developer productivity and making developer lives better. Cloud infrastructure and Kubernetes: You've built systems that run reliably at scale on AWS. You know EKS, EC2, EBS, and cloud networking (VPCs, load balancers, VPN tunneling) and have opinions on when each approach is right. Platform thinking: You've built infrastructure that other teams build products on top of. You understand the difference between a working prototype and a platform - reliability, observability, clear contracts, and graceful failure modes. Cost and efficiency: You treat infrastructure spending as a first-class concern. You've driven meaningful cost reduction through architectural changes, not just right-sizing. Agent or async workloads (a plus): You've thought about the operational characteristics of async, autonomous, or long-running compute workloads - pooling, lifecycle management, isolation, secret handling. Developer tooling (a plus): You care about the end-to-end developer experience. You've built or contributed to tools that engineers use daily and understand the difference between technically correct and genuinely usable. Go, Python, or similar server-side languages. We're pragmatic about language - you'll learn what you need. Preferred qualifications: Experience in one or more of the following areas is especially valuable: Developer environments, remote development platforms, or sandboxed workload execution Infrastructure for AI agents or asynchronous compute workloads CI/CD, integration testing, build systems, or pre-submit validation Git, GitHub Enterprise, source-control infrastructure, or large-scale repository hosting Code-review systems, policy enforcement, code ownership, or automated review tooling Kubernetes operators, workload scheduling, autoscaling, resource isolation, or capacity management Bazel, monorepo tooling, dependency management, or polyglot build infrastructure Platform APIs, control planes, worker pools, caching systems, or distributed queues Authentication, authorization, secrets management, or secure workload execution Infrastructure cost optimization and capacity planning Your Location: This position is US - Remote Eligible. Compensation$55K - 120K a year

Develop and modernize CI platform infrastructure focusing on scheduling, queueing, and workload orchestration. | Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience with interest in distributed systems and knowledge of Golang, Kubernetes, Docker, and EC2. The Community You Will Join: The Developer Infrastructure organization’s mission is to enable Airbnb engineers and AI Coding Agents to ship high-quality software with confidence and speed. Diagnose production issues across distributed systems, networking, storage, and orchestration Setting technical direction and making high-stakes architectural decisions with significant ambiguity Mentoring engineers on the team and raising the quality bar through code review and design feedback Your Expertise: 5-9+ years of industry experience (and/or relevant academic experience) Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree, preferably in CS, or equivalent experience Experience leading and shipping large scope technical projects in collaboration with multiple experienced engineers.
