Role Overview: We are searching for a highly intelligent and innovative Frontend Web Engineer to join our team. At Sleeper, we believe in the power of smart, creative individuals to drive change and build incredible things, regardless of their background in specific technologies. You will play a crucial role in developing our web products to ensure scalability, reliability, and quality, impacting millions of dedicated users every day. Sleeper is a rapidly growing platform for sports fans with social at its core. Our web platform consists primarily of React, typescript, and webpack and shares much of its core with our mobile product. We’re looking for an experienced web developer who can bring their knowledge and skills to help refine our web product; bringing feature, quality, and technology parity to our mobile experience. Responsibilities: • Collaborate with designers to understand user requirements and translate them into technical specifications for the React web application. • Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code using React, JS, and related libraries (Tailwind, React Query, NextJS, etc.). • Develop reusable UI components and implement a well-structured component hierarchy for the React application. • Implement user interface (UI) functionality and logic using React features like state management, hooks, and server-side rendering. • Integrate front-end components with back-end services using APIs (RESTful or GraphQL). • Troubleshoot and debug complex web application issues • Stay up-to-date on the latest advancements in React, web development best practices, Core Web Vitals, and accessibility guidelines. Who You Are: • A degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience • 5+ years of web development with an emphasis on frontend • Desire to take on and own a large scale product with freedom to design and develop a best in class product • Proven ability to develop and implement algorithms or systems in a professional setting, with strong coding skills in Javascript and strong a web technologies skillset • Highly proactive, with a track record of building processes from scratch and a willingness to challenge traditional risk management paradigms. • Comfortable in fast-paced, ambiguous environments, thriving on innovation and the challenge of creating something new. About the Role We’re looking for a Staff Software Engineer - Backend to help us scale the core systems behind our fantasy sports and DFS (Daily Fantasy Sports) offerings. In this role, you’ll drive architectural decisions, build critical backend services, and mentor fellow engineers as we scale to support tens of millions of passionate sports fans. As a senior technical leader, you’ll collaborate cross-functionally to bring innovative features to life—from real-time contest engines and game logic to personalized content and secure, seamless payments. You’ll be empowered to own major parts of the backend stack and help define what "great" looks like in terms of performance, scalability, and reliability at Sleeper. What You’ll Do Design and build core backend systems that power Sleeper's games and real-time user experiences—fantasy contests, Sleeper Picks, user profiles, leaderboards, and more. Architect scalable, distributed systems capable of handling millions of concurrent users with low latency and high availability. Lead backend initiatives from concept to deployment, ensuring clean interfaces, well-documented services, and resilient infrastructure. Optimize system performance and proactively address bottlenecks through monitoring, profiling, and capacity planning. Collaborate cross-functionally with product, design, and frontend teams to deliver features that users love. Mentor engineers, provide thoughtful code reviews, and shape backend engineering best practices and standards. Drive innovation, technical direction, and team culture as a key engineering voice at the leadership level. Who You Are 7+ years of backend software engineering experience, including experience in staff-level or tech lead roles. Proven ability to design and scale distributed systems that serve millions of users in real-time or gaming environments. Strong proficiency in one or more backend languages (e.g., Go, Python, Node.js, Java), and an understanding of trade-offs between them. Deep knowledge of databases (both SQL and NoSQL), caching strategies, and message queues (e.g., Kafka, RabbitMQ, Pub/Sub). Comfortable designing and maintaining RESTful and/or graphql APIs, data models, and internal tooling. Cloud experience (AWS, GCP, or similar), with familiarity with containers (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes a plus).
