Compensation$200K - 220K a year

Design and build new AI-powered user-facing features using Ruby on Rails and Typescript/React Native, collaborate with product and design teams, integrate with LLM APIs, and mentor engineers. | 6+ years experience, deep expertise in Ruby on Rails or similar backend, working knowledge of Typescript/React, some experience with LLM APIs, strong product intuition, and remote startup experience preferred. | At Skylight, we thrive on innovation and creativity, building products that bring families closer together. As a Full Stack Engineer within our new AI products team, you'll be at the forefront of developing features that enhance user experiences across our platforms. This is a unique opportunity to work on both the frontend and backend aspects of our applications, contributing to a product loved by millions of users. We're looking for a high-speed, product-minded, entrepreneurial Full Stack Software Engineer (Senior, Staff, or Principal level). In this role, you will work directly with our GM of New Businesses to build out new AI-powered features across our platform. You’ll build primarily in Ruby on Rails and occasionally in Typescript (React and React Native), integrating with LLMs from vendors like OpenAI. You should have deep expertise in both front-end and back-end technologies, with mastery of Ruby on Rails or a similar back end language and at least a working knowledge of (and willingness to learn) Typescript/React Native, and you should have at least some cursory experience building features that leverage Gen AI/LLM APIs. Responsibilities • Design, build, and launch new user-facing features powered by large language models (LLMs) • Own major product initiatives from zero-to-one, in partnership with a small but mighty team • Collaborate with Product and Design to shape new products and features: bringing your creativity and ingenuity to our roadmap as well challenging assumptions, refining scope, and helping us ship elegant, focused, customer-centric MVPs and iterations. • Integrate with third-party APIs like OpenAI and explore new model capabilities • Build exciting new features in Ruby on Rails, Typescript, React Native, and whatever other languages/technologies we adopt to best serve the needs of our customers • Write code that is simple, clean, tested, and pragmatic: fast enough to validate, solid enough not to drag us down later, and scrappy enough that we’re willing to throw it away. • Mentor other engineers through code reviews and design discussions • 6+ years experience building software products end-to-end • Strong product intuition. You know how to dial in on what an MVP should deliver or learn, and craft the simplest path to get there. • Bias toward action and autonomy: you thrive when given trust and ownership. • Exceptional verbal and written communication. You are able to make the technical accessible and inspire confidence regardless of the audience • Deep experience in Ruby on Rails (or similar backend frameworks) and working knowledge of Typescript/React • Demonstrated ability to ship zero-to-one products as a solo engineer or team lead • At least side-project experience working with LLM APIs and enthusiasm for developing Gen AI applications • Remote startup experience strongly preferred Nice to Haves • Professional experience building features with OpenAI, Anthropic, or similar LLM APIs • Familiarity with prompt engineering or retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) • Prior work on family-facing or consumer products Our competitive compensation package includes: • Competitive Salary + Equity Package • 401K matching • Wellness, learning, and home-office budgets • Health, Dental & Vision Medical Plans • Tremendous autonomy to set the direction of your work • Unlimited PTO • Company holidays on the first Friday of every month (Except November & December) Equal opportunity employer Skylight is committed to building a diverse and inclusive team. All qualified applicants will be considered without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or any other factor protected by applicable federal, state, or local laws. If you’re the best person for the job, we want you on board! We hire across the U.S., but for legal reasons, we have to list NY and CO separately. For Colorado-based candidates, the range being offered for this role is $200-$220K based on experience and for California-based candidates, the range being offered for this role is $$200-$220K based on experience. Pursuant to the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance, we will consider employment for qualified applicants with criminal histories in a manner consistent with the requirements of this law. We’re at the forefront of a civic movement to reinvent how all levels of government serve families, patients, and many others in today's digital world. If you want to play a part in driving this critical movement forward, we’d love for you to join our growing team of public interest technologists. The work we do matters. About the job As Research & Design Lead, you’ll shape and guide all design and research efforts for a major modernization initiative at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). You’ll set the vision for how design and research drive outcomes, ensuring services are user-centered, accessible, and sustainable. You’ll work side by side with product and engineering leaders to align strategy with execution, while creating the conditions for designers and researchers to do their best work. Beyond delivery, you’ll focus on building capacity — establishing standards, playbooks, and systems that government teams can use long after our involvement. What you’ll do • Provide leadership and direction for design and research across multiple work-streams • Establish and maintain design standards, accessibility requirements (Section 508), and inclusive practices • Develop and oversee research operations, ensuring ethical and representative participation • Guide service and product strategy with artifacts such as blueprints, prototypes, and decision narratives • Build and evolve design systems and content operations that support reuse and consistency • Mentor and grow designers and researchers, while enabling federal partners to sustain improvements over time What we're looking for Minimum qualifications • Experience leading multidisciplinary design and research programs from discovery through implementation • Portfolio showing complex, multi-team work that led to measurable outcomes • Knowledge of research methods and ability to translate insights into actionable design decisions • Ability to set and maintain design quality standards, including accessibility (Section 508) • Strong collaboration with product and engineering partners to align strategy and delivery • Clear communication and facilitation skills with executives and stakeholders • Commitment to mentoring and knowledge transfer so teams continue improving over time • Ability to work successfully in a professional services environment • Passion for creating better public outcomes through great government services • A mindset and work approach that align with Skylight’s core values • Ability travel for work from time to time Nice-to-have qualifications • Experience delivering modernization in complex or regulated environments • Familiarity with security and compliance contexts such as Authority to Operate (ATO) processes • Experience scaling design systems or shared service patterns • Background in measuring experience quality and service performance • Experience working effectively on hybrid or distributed teams • Ability to spend time on-site at HHS in Washington, DC — either by being based locally or by traveling periodically for in-person collaboration • Prior experience working in the civic tech space Don’t meet 100% of the criteria but think you can do the job? We’d love to chat anyway! We’re on a mission to build diverse teams, and studies have shown that women and marginalized folks are less likely to apply to jobs if they don’t check every box. Other requirements • All work must be conducted within the U.S., excluding U.S. territories. Some federal contracts require U.S. citizenship to be eligible for employment. • You must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. now and in the future without sponsorship. • As a government contractor, you may be required to obtain a public trust or security clearance. • You may be required to complete a company background check successfully. • Some of our available roles are on federal contracts that require a degree or additional years of experience as a substitute.
