Compensation$90K - 140K a year

Design and build AI-powered backend systems and mentor engineers. | 8+ years experience with Golang or Python and building distributed backend systems for edge clients. | Who we are Samsara (NYSE: IOT) is the pioneer of the Connected Operations™ Cloud, which is a platform that enables organizations that depend on physical operations to harness Internet of Things (IoT) data to develop actionable insights and improve their operations. At Samsara, we are helping improve the safety, efficiency and sustainability of the physical operations that power our global economy. Representing more than 40% of global GDP, these industries are the infrastructure of our planet, including agriculture, construction, field services, transportation, and manufacturing — and we are excited to help digitally transform their operations at scale. Working at Samsara means you’ll help define the future of physical operations and be on a team that’s shaping an exciting array of product solutions, including Video-Based Safety, Vehicle Telematics, Apps and Driver Workflows, and Equipment Monitoring. As part of a recently public company, you’ll have the autonomy and support to make an impact as we build for the long term. About the role The In-Vehicle Experience team at Samsara built its foundation at the edge: six firmware engineers shipping the software that runs on dash cams in hundreds of thousands of vehicles. Now the roadmap is expanding into AI-powered voice agents, real-time audio orchestration, and driver feedback systems, and the team is standing up its software engineering function for the first time. You'd be the first dedicated SWE and the team's technical anchor from day one. The problem space is unusual: a truck cab where a driver's attention is limited, multiple AI-driven systems are competing to speak, and every decision has to be right the first time. Today, these products don't exist yet. You'll define what to build, design the systems behind it, and ship it. The starting point is always the driver's experience. You'll work primarily in backend systems that orchestrate agentic, voice, and real-time experiences running at the edge. The team's firmware engineers own the device side. You'll need to understand edge constraints well enough to design APIs and service contracts they can consume, but this is a backend and AI role. AI-assisted engineering is central to how you'll work. You'll use tools like Codex, Claude Code, and Cursor throughout the development lifecycle: investigation, design, code generation, testing, review, and operations. This is a remote position open to candidates residing in the US. In this role, you will: Define what to build and how to build it, shaping product direction from the engineering side Own the technical direction for orchestrating concurrent, real-time interactions to deliver one coherent experience for the driver Build and ship new AI-powered products from zero to one in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment Design systems that coordinate across backend and edge boundaries, where reliability and real-time responsiveness both matter Make architectural tradeoffs where requirements are still evolving, favoring foundations that generalize over narrowly-scoped solutions Establish patterns for reliability, observability, and explainability in systems that make real-time decisions Serve as the team's technical anchor: review designs, unblock decisions, and mentor firmware engineers as they grow into full-stack contributors Bring in outside ideas and practices for full-stack and AI-assisted development Champion the Samsara cultural principles (Focus on Customer Success, Build for the Long Term, Adopt a Growth Mindset, Be Inclusive, Win as a Team) as we scale globally Minimum requirements for the role: 8+ years of software engineering experience, including ownership of products from concept through production Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience Strong programming fundamentals (Golang, Python, or similar) Experience building products on top of LLMs or AI agent platforms Experience designing reliable, distributed backend systems that support multi-step, asynchronous workflows Experience designing backend systems that serve edge, embedded, or resource-constrained clients Experience with quality and safety considerations for AI-driven systems: validating outputs, structured responses, retries/fallbacks, and monitoring Experience mentoring engineers as they expand into unfamiliar technical domains Strong communication skills and ability to influence technical direction without formal authority Located in and authorized to work in the United States or Canada (fully remote) An ideal candidate also has: Experience building zero-to-one products in fast-moving, high-autonomy environments Experience building scheduling or arbitration systems Experience designing systems that combine structured and open-ended signal collection to inform product decisions Familiarity with agent orchestration frameworks or patterns The range of annual base salary for full-time employees for this position is below. Please note that base pay offered may vary depending on factors including your city of residence, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. This role is also eligible for an initial RSU grant with no vesting cliff, and ongoing refresh opportunities tied to performance, subject to plan terms and conditions. Architect and own critical route planning and tracking systems while mentoring senior engineers and collaborating cross-functionally. | Bachelor's degree with 8+ years software engineering experience including 2 years technical leadership and proven distributed systems design. About the role Are you interested in building solutions that help our customers deliver their cargo safely and efficiently while cutting fleet costs? The Routing team at Samsara is building the world's best products for supporting drivers and empowering dispatchers to orchestrate large fleets of light and heavy vehicles. As a Staff Engineer, you'll set technical direction across the full routing surface area — route optimization, dispatch systems, real-time tracking, and integrations with customer ERP/TMS systems. We're an active 0-to-1 team modeling our customers' real-world operations: delivering to hard-to-reach locations on busy urban streets, maximizing fleet capacity by recommending the right vehicles, and planning for both familiar routes and surprise deliveries — all while staying compliant with the ever-changing rules of commercial navigation. The work leans heavily on distributed systems that handle geospatial and real-time data at scale. You'll mentor senior engineers and partner with product, design, and mobile to ship features customers use every day. Our stack features Golang for backend services, GraphQL for data fetching, and TypeScript + React for our web client, with React Native for our mobile app. Direct experience with these technologies is not required. This role is remote and open to candidates based in the US. You might be a good fit if: You want to impact the industries that run our world: The software, firmware, and hardware you build will have real-world impact — helping keep the lights on, get food into grocery stores, and most importantly, ensure workers return home safely. You want to build for scale: With over 2.3 million IoT devices deployed to customers worldwide, you'll work across new and mature technologies that power the world's physical operations. You are a life-long learner: We have ambitious goals. Every Samsarian has a growth mindset as we work with a wide range of technologies, challenges, and customers that push us to learn on the go. You believe customers are more than a number: Samsara engineers enjoy a rare closeness to the end user — you'll join customer interviews, collaborate with customer success and product managers, and use metrics to ensure our work translates into better customer outcomes. You are a team player: Our engineering teams require a mix of independent effort and collaboration. Motivated by our mission, we're all racing toward our connected operations vision, and we intend to win — together. In this role, you will: Architect and own critical systems that span route planning and dispatch including route optimization algorithms, dispatch state machines, and real-time tracking infrastructure. Design scalable backend services that handle tracking and execution of hundreds of thousands of routes in real time, along with reporting and suggested optimizations to better utilize vehicles, drivers, and take optimal routes to accomplish customer work. Build web interfaces and APIs that allow dispatchers and fleet managers to create, assign, and monitor routes and deliveries for their entire organization from a single pane of glass. Implement integrations with TMS/ERP systems (including legacy systems such as AS/400 and SAP) that process millions of route events a day. Work closely with PMs, designers, and engineers across time zones to ensure cohesive product experiences, balancing generic and long-tail customer needs. Mentor senior engineers, set technical direction, and raise the bar for design and code quality across the team. Navigate tradeoffs between moving fast and building for the long term, using customer impact as the north star. Collaborate with stakeholders across product, sales, and customer success to bring features to market and maintain a tight feedback loop. Champion, role model, and embed Samsara’s cultural principles (Focus on Customer Success, Build for the Long Term, Adopt a Growth Mindset, Be Inclusive, Win as a Team) as we scale globally and across new offices. Minimum requirements for the role: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Engineering or equivalent practical experience. 8+ years of experience as a software engineer, with at least 2 years in an architect or technical leadership role. Demonstrated ability executing in ambiguous environments and delivering customer value. Strong programming, coding, and design fundamentals. Experience designing and architecting large, high-scale distributed systems. Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. An ideal candidate also has: Proven experience shaping and improving routing products. Demonstrated experience with geospatial data, real-time systems, and fleet management platforms. A track record of thriving in 0→1 teams and scaling them through the post-startup phase. Experience operating as a tech lead or in a similar technical leadership role directly impacting the output of other engineers. A passion for mentoring and helping senior and junior engineers grow. Experience building for mobile (React Native, iOS/Android), especially GPS/navigation apps. The ability and willingness to engage directly with customers when needed. Prior startup or founder experience – you know how to move fast and find leverage. The range of annual base salary for full-time employees for this position is below. Please note that base pay offered may vary depending on factors including your city of residence, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. At Samsara, we are helping improve the safety, efficiency and sustainability of the physical operations that power our global economy. About the role The way software gets built is changing fast. AI agents are starting to write, review, and ship code alongside engineers — and our Developer Experience team sits right in the middle of figuring out what that actually looks like at Samsara. We build the tooling and infrastructure that Samsara's engineers use every day. Our "customers" are the people building the products that keep millions of workers safe and physical operations running. When we make their day better, every product team at Samsara benefits. We're hiring a Staff Software Engineer to help set technical direction for the team. You'd be working on everything from our CI/CD pipelines to the AI coding agents engineers will rely on to do their jobs. It's a small team with a lot of surface area, and the work you do here shows up across the whole engineering org. This role is remote and open to candidates based in the US. You might be a good fit if: You've actually built things with AI coding agents — not just used them. You have opinions about what works, what doesn't, and where this is all heading. You like work where a small change you make ripples out to help a lot of people. You care about what Samsara does. The software we build helps keep grocery shelves stocked, lights on, and workers safe on the job. You're genuinely curious and like learning new things. The tech landscape here moves quickly and we're all figuring it out together. You think of engineers as real people, not tickets. You're happy to sit with them, watch how they work, and dig into the small frustrations that add up. You work well with others. We move faster when we move together. In this role, you'll: Help shape the technical direction of our developer platform — CI/CD, build systems, and the AI agents engineers interact with daily Design and build AI agents that take real work off engineers' plates: coding, code review, test generation, release automation, and incident response Scale our tooling so it can keep up as the engineering org grows, without sacrificing reliability or developer happiness Standardize tools and practices so good ideas spread instead of getting reinvented on every team Raise the technical bar through code reviews, design discussions, and mentorship Partner with engineering leadership on the bets worth making, and be honest about tradeoffs Represent Samsara externally when it makes sense — talks, open source, helping us become a place great engineers want to work Live out our cultural principles: Focus on Customer Success, Build for the Long Term, Adopt a Growth Mindset, Be Inclusive, and Win as a Team Minimum requirements: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience 8+ years building software, with at least 2 years in an architect or technical leadership role Strong programming and design fundamentals 4+ years working on large-scale distributed systems 4+ years leading technical projects across multiple teams Nice to have: Experience building developer platforms, internal tooling, or CI/CD for a large engineering org (hundreds of engineers or more) You've shipped real work with AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, custom agents) — not just tried them out Strong skills in Go, Python, TypeScript, or a similar language A track record of making engineers measurably faster — quicker builds, easier deploys, less toil, happier developers Comfort working in ambiguity and getting teams aligned without needing formal authority The range of annual base salary for full-time employees for this position is below.
