Software Engineer II, Frontend Agentic AI

OktaSan Francisco, CaliforniaFull-time
View Job
Compensation$70K - 120K a year

Design and build conversational interfaces for autonomous AI agents with real-time interactions and collaborate with backend engineers. | At least 5 years relevant experience including 3 years frontend with React and TypeScript, experience with real-time UIs and LLM-powered interfaces. | Secure Every Identity, from AI to Human Identity is the key to unlocking the potential of AI. Okta secures AI by building the trusted, neutral infrastructure that enables organizations to safely embrace this new era. This work requires a relentless drive to solve complex challenges with real-world stakes. We are looking for builders and owners who operate with speed and urgency and execute with excellence. This is an opportunity to do career-defining work. We're all in on this mission. If you are too, let's talk. The Software Engineer II Opportunity We are looking for a software engineer to build the interfaces people use to work with autonomous AI workers. This is not a dashboard job. Our users chat with agents that run for hours, steer them mid-task, inspect what an agent remembers, approve or reject its actions, and watch it work in real time. You will own those surfaces: the chat experience, the memory and context views, the live run timeline, and the approval flows that keep a human in charge. You will define what agentic interfaces look like—because most of the patterns you will ship do not exist yet. This is a senior individual contributor role requiring a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience. About You Proven Product Builder: You have built and shipped products that users love and have seen the direct impact of your work at scale. End-to-End Ownership: You take pride in owning projects from initial concept to launch and are comfortable wearing multiple hats to get the job done. AI & Tech Innovator: You stay ahead of the curve, eager to explore and implement the latest technologies, particularly in AI and LLM front-end paradigms. Collaborative Partner: You thrive in a high-bandwidth team environment and work effortlessly with both technical and non-technical partners. Driven & Ambitious: You have a hunger for success and want to build at a fast-growing company with big goals. What you’ll be doing Build the conversational interface for long-horizon agents: streaming responses, tool calls shown as they happen, pause and interrupt controls, and mid-task steering. Design and ship memory management interfaces that let users see what an agent knows, edit or delete memories, and understand what context the agent is using and why. Build live agent run views: plans, steps, artifacts, retries, and results, rendered in real time over WebSockets or server-sent events. Build human-in-the-loop approval surfaces for agent actions that write to external systems, with clear diffs of what the agent is about to do. Build the Worker Builder interface where users design and configure their own digital workers in natural language. Manage complex client state for long-running agent sessions: reconnection, optimistic updates, partial results, and failure recovery. Create a reusable component library for agentic patterns so every new worker ships with a consistent, polished interface. Handle model output honestly in the UI: citations, uncertainty, errors, and empty states that tell the user the truth. Work daily with backend and agent engineers to shape the APIs and event streams the interfaces consume. Optimize for performance across devices and keep the experience fast while an agent streams thousands of events. What you’ll bring to the role 3+ years of front-end engineering experience with deep expertise in React, TypeScript, and modern state management (hooks, context, state machines). Experience building chat, copilot, or other LLM-powered interfaces in production. Hands-on experience with real-time UIs: WebSockets, server-sent events, streaming rendering, and reconnection handling. Strong product sense and the ability to design interaction patterns where no standard exists yet. Experience integrating front ends with LLM APIs and handling streamed, partial, and structured model outputs. Experience translating designs into fast, polished, responsive production code. Strong communication skills and comfort working directly with users to refine the experience. And extra credit if you have experience in any of the following! You have shipped a chat or agent product used by thousands of users. Familiarity with agent frameworks (LangChain, LangGraph, or equivalent) and AI front-end SDKs such as the Vercel AI SDK. Experience with design systems, accessibility standards, and component library ownership. Experience visualizing complex processes: timelines, graphs, or workflow builders. Prior experience at a high-growth venture-backed AI or SaaS startup. (P25691) #LI-Inperson #LI-BB! Below is the annual base salary range for candidates located in San Francisco Bay Area. Implement and integrate LLM-based experiences using frameworks like LangChain, LlamaIndex, and tools like OpenAI, Claude, or Gemini. Define, implement, and champion operational excellence standards (SLOs, observability, incident response frameworks) for all services deployed. Develop responsive, accessible, and modern frontend interfaces using frameworks like React or Vue — with a focus on usability, performance, and trust in AI outputs. Build and maintain a library of reusable frontend components and hooks that allow other business delivery teams to easily "drop in" GenAI capabilities into their own applications. Build and maintain retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines with vector search and embedding strategies (e.g., Pinecone, FAISS, Qdrant). Collaborate with designers and product managers to rapidly iterate on UX patterns for AI-powered experiences (e.g., prompt inputs, citations, summaries). Ensure security, privacy, observability, and test coverage across the full stack. Contribute to architecture decisions, engineering standards, and best practices for AI/automation systems. Partner with platform and infrastructure teams to ensure services scale reliably across the org. What You’ll Bring 5–8 years of software engineering experience with full-stack development, including 2+ years of building AI/ML-driven applications. 5+ years of experience in frontend technologies like React, TypeScript, or Vue, and comfort working on UI/UX for internal tools or enterprise applications. Strong Python development skills and 2+ years experience building cloud-based services using AWS, Docker, and RESTful APIs. Hands-on experience with LLM integration, RAG pipelines, prompt engineering, or orchestration frameworks like LangChain or LlamaIndex. Strong background in distributed systems, APIs, microservices, container orchestration (ECS/EKS), and cloud platforms (AWS/GCP/Azure). Familiarity with secure coding, authentication/authorization, and internal data governance best practices. Ability to collaborate across engineering, design, and product teams — with a strong sense of user empathy and technical ownership. Bonus: Exposure to design systems, AI evaluation tooling, or real-time application performance monitoring. Why Join Okta Make AI Real: Design and build AI-powered apps used daily by Okta employees. Full-Stack Challenge: Tackle end-to-end problems — from LLM orchestration to intuitive UIs.
