What You'll Do: Enterprise Cloud & AI Platform • Design and maintain enterprise GCP landing zones using Google Cloud Deployment Manager, Terraform, and Cloud Foundation Toolkit aligned with NYL governance standards. Build and operate shared cloud services supporting AI and non-AI workloads on GCP components like Cloud Storage, Cloud Functions, Cloud Run, Cloud Pub/Sub, and Cloud Spanner. Implement Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) for platform, networking, and AI service enablement • Support hybrid connectivity and secure data access patterns for AI use cases using Cloud Interconnect and Cloud VPN. Kubernetes, Containers & AI Workloads • Engineer and operate GKE (Google Kubernetes Engine) clusters for application and AI inference workloads • Enable containerized AI services and microservices using approved base images from Google Container Registry (GCR) or JFrog Artifact Registry. • Support GPU-enabled workloads where approved • Implement standardized deployment patterns for AI APIs and services using Helm for Kubernetes deployment management Google AI / GenAI Enablement • Enable and operate approved Google AI services, including: • Vertex AI (model hosting, endpoints, pipelines - platform enablement only, agentic AI deployments and communication protocols in Vertex AI Agent Builder and Agent Engine) • Gemini APIs and other managed GenAI services (as approved by NYL governance) • BigQuery ML and AI-integrated analytics platforms • Implement secure access controls, networking, and monitoring for AI services using Cloud Identity & Access Management (IAM), VPC Service Controls, and Cloud Monitoring. • Integrate AI platforms with CI/CD pipelines and enterprise SDLC controls using tools like Harness CICD • Partner with Data & AI teams to operationalize AI workloads safely and compliantly within Google Cloud environments. DevOps, Automation & MLOps Foundations • Build secure CI/CD pipelines for application and AI workloads using Harness CI/CD • Support MLOps foundations such as: • Model deployment automation via Kubeflow, TensorFlow Extended (TFX), Vertex AI Pipelines, and Vertex AI Model Registry. • Environment promotion and rollback using Terraform • Monitoring and logging for AI endpoints using New Relic for synthetic monitoring, and Cloud Logging and Cloud Monitoring for deeper observability and troubleshooting. • Enforce guardrails, approvals, and policy-as-code for AI usage with Cloud Security Command Center, Google Cloud Policy Analyzer, and Open Policy Agent (OPA). Security, Risk & Compliance • Implement IAM, workload identity, and least-privilege models for AI services using Cloud Identity & Access Management (IAM) and Workload Identity Federation. • Enforce data residency, encryption, and access policies using Cloud Key Management Service (KMS) and Cloud Data Loss Prevention (DLP). • Integrate AI platform telemetry with enterprise logging, monitoring, and SIEM using Cloud Logging, Cloud Monitoring, and New Relic. • Support audits, risk reviews, and regulatory requirements (SOC2, SOX, data privacy) by leveraging Google Cloud Security Command Center, Cloud Audit Logs, and Cloud Data Loss Prevention API. Reliability, Observability & Cost Management • Design platforms for high availability and resilience, including AI services using GKE, Cloud Spanner, Cloud SQL, and Google Cloud Load Balancing. • Monitor AI workloads for performance, reliability, and cost usage using New Relic for synthetic monitoring, Cloud Monitoring, and Cloud Trace for performance insight and Harness CCM for cost • Optimize cloud and AI service costs using budgets and usage controls using Google Cloud Billing, Budgets, Alerts and Harness CCM • Participate in incident response and root-cause analysis logged in service now and manage incident notifications through PagerDuty. Collaboration & Governance • Partner withData & AI, InfoSec, Security, Risk, and Application teams to ensure secure, compliant, and efficient AI platform usage. • Contribute to enterprise standards for cloud and AI platform usage including Best Practices for GCP and Google Cloud Architecture Framework. • Provide guidance on responsible AI platform adoption using frameworks like Google's AI Principles and Fairness Indicators. • Document reference architectures and best practices for GCP AI services, MLOps, and cloud infrastructure. Lead and support medical informatics initiatives to improve underwriting workflows and risk assessment, collaborate with cross-functional teams, mentor underwriters, and develop medical guidelines. | Medical degree with clinical experience, informatics expertise, licensed to practice medicine, preferably board certified, and experience with EHR systems and digital health tools. | Location Designation: Hybrid - 1 day per quarter Role Overview: New York Life is seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Medical Director with expertise in innovation and medical informatics to join our Underwriting Innovation team. This role is ideal for a medical professional who has successfully bridged the gap between medicine, technology, and data — and is passionate about using informatics to drive innovation in mortality and morbidity risk assessment, digital underwriting, and operational efficiency. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in clinical practice and a proven track record applying informatics principles to improve decision-making, data integration, or patient and population health outcomes. As part of a collaborative team, you will guide initiatives related to Artificial Intelligence (AI), predictive models, underwriting rules, electronic health record (EHR) utilization, clinical viewers, data governance, and workflow optimization across the underwriting process. You will also play a critical role in supporting underwriting teams, developing and maintaining medical guidelines, and collaborating with cross-functional partners including data science, actuarial, technology, and product. This reports to our head of Underwriting Innovation for primary responsibilities and has a secondary (dotted) line of reporting to our Chief Medical Director. What You’ll Do: · Apply clinical and informatics expertise to support accurate, technology-enabled risk assessment of complex medical cases including the use of automations tools such as underwriting rules, AI and predictive models. · Serve as a liaison between medical, technology, analytics and data science teams to design and implement informatics solutions that improve underwriting workflows and decision-making. · Lead or support initiatives involving clinical data standardization, natural language processing (NLP), and EHR data ingestion and interpretation. · Evaluate external digital health trends and tools (e.g., wearables, digital biomarkers, telehealth data) for their potential integration into risk selection and assessment. · Review medical records, lab data, and diagnostic testing (including ECGs), providing consultative guidance to the underwriting team. · Mentor underwriters and junior team members on clinical concepts and emerging informatics practices. · Contribute to the development and refinement of evidence-based medical underwriting guidelines. · Collaborate with underwriters to integrate clinical insights with digital data sources (e.g., EHRs, structured health data, and patient-reported outcomes). What You’ll Bring: · Medical degree (MD/DO or equivalent) required; MPH, MS in Medical Informatics, or equivalent training in health data science, clinical informatics, or digital health preferred. Advanced medical practitioners including Physician Assistants and/or Nurse Practitioners with strong experience in Health Informatics will also be considered. · Minimum of 3 years clinical experience · Prior experience in life insurance, risk assessment, or the financial services sector is highly desirable. · Candidates should demonstrate experience with medical informatics or clinical innovation including implementing clinical decision support tools, health IT systems, or digital health platforms. · Strong understanding of EHR systems, healthcare terminology and interoperability standards (e.g., HL7, FHIR, ICD, CPT, LOINC, and SNOMED CT), and experience with one or more Electronic Health Record systems. · Exceptional communication skills and ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams. · Licensed to practice medicine in at least one U.S. state. · Board certification in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine preferred, though not required. · Board certification or eligibility for Board certification in Insurance medicine is highly desirable. Pay Transparency Salary Range: $220,000 - $270,000 Overtime eligible: Exempt Discretionary bonus eligible: Yes Sales bonus eligible: No Actual base salary will be determined based on several factors but not limited to individual’s experience, skills, qualifications, and job location. Additionally, employees are eligible for an annual discretionary bonus. In addition to base salary, employees may also be eligible to participate in an incentive program.
