The Role Engineers at Kobalt own products end-to-end, from understanding the customer problem and shaping the technical approach through building, shipping, and operating the solution in production. As a Backend Software Engineer, you'll build the systems that power Kobalt's products, from the data models and APIs behind complex risk and compliance workflows to the infrastructure that powers our AI. You'll have significant ownership from day one, designing and building systems that need to be reliable, scalable, and flexible as our product and customer base grow. What You'll Do Design, build, and operate backend systems that power Kobalt's core products and workflows. Build AI-powered features that automate complex, historically manual risk and compliance work. Own technical projects end-to-end, from architecture and data modeling through implementation, deployment, and iteration. Build reliable APIs, data pipelines, and infrastructure that support increasingly complex customer workflows. Improve the performance, reliability, and scalability of our systems as Kobalt grows. Work closely with other engineers and Customer Success to understand customer needs and turn them into technical solutions. Qualifications 3+ years of software engineering experience building and operating production systems. Strong software engineering fundamentals and experience building backend applications and APIs. Strong understanding of databases, data modeling, distributed systems, and production infrastructure. Experience designing and owning substantial backend systems from initial architecture through production. Ability to reason through complex technical problems and make thoughtful architectural tradeoffs. Strong attention to reliability, performance, and maintainability. As a Tech Lead, you'll own and drive a major area of Kobalt's product. You'll be responsible for its technical direction and execution, working closely with customers to deeply understand the problems we're solving, determine what we should build, make the architectural decisions behind it, and lead other engineers in getting it shipped. This is a Staff+ level role, but a highly hands-on one. We're looking for exceptional engineers who want broad ownership and technical leadership while continuing to spend significant time building. What You'll Do Own the technical direction and execution of a major Kobalt product module end-to-end. Develop a deep understanding of the customers, workflows, and problems within your product area and use that context to shape what we build. Turn ambiguous product and customer problems into technical strategy, architecture, and concrete execution plans. Lead complex projects spanning multiple engineers, making the technical decisions and tradeoffs necessary to ship quickly without sacrificing the foundations we'll need as we scale. Personally design and build critical parts of the product, from backend systems and data models to customer-facing experiences. Set a high technical bar through architecture, code reviews, engineering practices, and mentorship of other engineers. Identify and address technical and product problems before they become neatly scoped projects. Help shape Kobalt's broader engineering architecture and culture as both our product surface area and engineering team grow. Qualifications 7+ years of software engineering experience, or equivalent experience demonstrating Staff+ level technical ownership. Track record of owning a substantial product or technical area end-to-end and setting its technical direction. Experience leading complex projects across multiple engineers and driving them from ambiguous problem through production. Exceptional hands-on engineering skills; you still want to spend a significant portion of your time writing and reviewing code. Strong product instincts and the ability to understand customer problems, make tradeoffs, and determine what should be built rather than waiting for a detailed specification. Comfortable operating across the stack and going wherever the hardest or highest-leverage problem requires. Experience as a Staff or Principal Engineer, technical lead, founding engineer, or technical founder/CTO is a plus. As a Full Stack Software Engineer, you'll build the core product experiences our customers use every day. Risk and compliance teams manage complex, highly structured workflows involving large amounts of data, documents, approvals, and collaboration. You'll figure out how to make those workflows fast and intuitive, then build the frontend and backend systems that make them work. This role is a good fit for an engineer who cares deeply about the product they're building: how information is structured, how users move through a workflow, where complexity belongs, and how the underlying technical design enables a great experience. What You'll Do Build and ship new product features end-to-end across Kobalt's frontend and backend. Own major features from technical design through launch, working closely with other engineers and Customer Success. Build intuitive user experiences for complex risk and compliance workflows. Develop AI-powered features that help customers automate work that has historically been manual. Improve the performance, reliability, and architecture of our application as we scale. Work directly with customers to understand how they use Kobalt and turn their feedback into better products. Qualifications 3+ years of software engineering experience building production web applications. Strong experience building modern, interactive frontend applications and the backend systems that support them. Excellent product and UX judgment, particularly for complex or data-dense applications. Strong understanding of frontend architecture, application state, APIs, data modeling, and relational databases. Ability to take a product problem from initial concept through technical design, implementation, and production. High attention to detail and a strong bar for the quality, performance, and usability of what you ship.
