Senior Engineering Manager, Data Processing Platform

Horizon3 AIAnywhereFull-time
View Job
Compensation$120K - 180K a year

Lead a team to migrate data processing to a real-time event-driven microservice architecture and manage backend/platform engineers. | Experience managing backend or platform engineering teams with strong distributed systems and cloud infrastructure fundamentals, plus clear written communication. | Get to Know Us Horizon3.ai is a fast-growing, remote cybersecurity company dedicated to the mission of enabling organizations to proactively find and fix and verify exploitable attack vectors before criminals exploit them. Our flagship product, the NodeZeroTM platform, delivers production-safe autonomous pentests and other key assessment operations that scale across the largest internal, external, cloud, and hybrid cloud environments. NodeZero has been adopted by organizations of all sizes, from small educational institutions to government agencies and Global 100 enterprises. It is used by ITOps/SecOps teams, consulting pentesters, and MSSPs and MSPs. We are a fusion of former U.S. Special Operations cyber operators, startup engineers, and formerly frustrated cybersecurity practitioners. We're committed to helping solve our common security problems: ineffective security tools, false positives resulting in alert fatigue, blind spots, "checkbox” security culture, cybersecurity skills shortage, and the long lead time and expense of hiring outside consultants. Collectively, we are a team of learn it alls, committed to a culture of respect, collaboration, ownership, and results. What You'll Do We're looking for an Engineering Manager to lead the Data Processing Platform team — the group responsible for how NodeZero turns raw pentest telemetry into the findings, reports, and insights our customers act on. As Horizon3 has grown in both customer count and customer size, pentest execution and data processing times scaled as well. Your team is taking on one of the most impactful architectural changes in Horizon3's history: reworking pentest data processing from a batch system into a real-time, event-driven microservice architecture. The goal is to make Horizon3 best-in-class for enterprise pentests at scale — handling hundreds of thousands of hosts and streaming findings as they're discovered. Customers will go from waiting weeks for insights to getting them in hours, fundamentally transforming how the entire product suite feels to use. This work combines platform engineering to build the infrastructure foundation with cybersecurity domain understanding to translate years of batch-centric business logic into real-time processing. In this role, you will: Lead and grow a team of backend and platform engineers migrating post-op processing from a batch system to a real-time, event-driven architecture. Partner with Product, Attack Engineering, and adjacent Platform teams to sequence the rework so customer value ships continuously rather than as one big-bang cutover. Work with senior engineers on the team to shape the technical direction: event streaming, stream processing, storage, schema evolution, and replayable processing. Invest in operational excellence — SLOs, observability, on-call, and incident response — as this system becomes central to every pentest Horizon3 runs. Help translate existing batch-era logic (finding enrichment, attack path analysis, reporting) into streaming-friendly designs without regressing fidelity. Recruit, mentor, and retain engineers who care about both distributed systems craft and the security domain. Establish healthy team practices: design reviews, technical writing, clear API contracts with neighboring teams, and durable decision records. This is a good opportunity for a manager who still enjoys being close to the technical details and wants to grow alongside a team tackling a meaty data platform rebuild. What You'll Bring Experience managing backend, data, or platform engineering teams, with a track record of shipping through the team. Solid fundamentals in backend and distributed systems: data modeling, API design, queues/streams, and the tradeoffs between batch and streaming. Comfort with modern cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred), containers, and observability tooling (Datadog or similar). Ability to lead through technical ambiguity — you can facilitate a design discussion, help the team converge, and know when to dig in yourself. Clear written communication: you can put together a roadmap, a design doc, or a postmortem the rest of the company can read. A sense of ownership for how the team operates day-to-day, not just what it ships. Nice to have: Exposure to event-driven architectures or streaming platforms (Kafka, Pulsar, Kinesis, Flink, or similar). Background in cybersecurity, pentesting, or vulnerability management. Familiarity with Python and/or Go. Perks of Horizon3.ai Inclusive Team: We value diversity and promote an inclusive culture where everyone can thrive. Growth Opportunities: Be part of a dynamic and growing team with numerous career development opportunities. Innovative Culture: Work in a collaborative environment that encourages creativity and out-of-the-box thinking. Hybrid & Remote Work: We embrace a mix of remote and hybrid work models depending on role and location, including our Chicago office, where some roles require regular in-office presence. Competitive Compensation: We offer competitive salary, equity and benefits. Our benefits include health, vision & dental insurance for you and your family, a flexible vacation policy, and generous parental leave. Collectively, we are a team of learn it alls, committed to a culture of respect, collaboration, ownership, and results. What You’ll Do We are hiring a Principal Backend Engineer to serve as the Technical Lead for the Platform Integration team — a high-impact group whose mandate is critical to the scalability of our platform. You’ll be responsible for shaping the systems, architecture, and technical direction behind a product that helps security teams cut through the noise and prioritize actually fixing the weaknesses that represent real risk in their environment. This role is for a senior individual contributor who leads through technical judgment, cross-functional partnership, and execution. This nascent team helps push our existing APIs to be first-class citizens, building the consistent, well-documented foundation that powers every integration and allows customers to build their own agentic workflows atop our platform. No less critical, this team will build strategic integrations to unlock critical new features atop mountains of complimentary data from users own systems. We want to meet users where they are at with their current tooling, and use the products they already have in their ecosystem to drive the find-fix-verify loop with greater accuracy and less downtime. The right candidate will be equally comfortable translating ambiguous product goals into concrete technical roadmaps, writing production code (primarily backend but with an understanding for frontend as well), mentoring other engineers, and influencing decisions across multiple projects and partner teams. Successful candidates will be product minded engineers with an obsession for the details and customer outcomes. As a Principal engineer, you will help shape longer-term technical direction with broader company impact and influence beyond a single domain. In the short-term this role will split time 50/50 between hands-on coding and architectural design. Over time as the team grows, you’ll spend more of your time on design and unblocking the team as they work to deliver best in class experiences for our customers. This is an ideal opportunity for someone who has lived and breathed Integrations in a past life, and understands the power that a scalable API platform can allow for an entire class of power-users. What You’ll Be Responsible For • Own the end-to-end technical vision for the Integration team and its supporting services, from initial concept through implementation, iteration, and long-term evolution. • Partner with cross functional stakeholders to translate ambiguous product and business goals into concrete technical strategy, architecture, and execution plans for the Integration team. • Contribute production code, setting the standard for design quality, code quality, and operational rigor. • Lead architectural decisions for scalable backend systems that balance velocity, reliability, maintainability, extensibility, and operability. • Drive execution across multiple concurrent projects and initiatives, identifying risks, dependencies, and tradeoffs early and helping the team sequence work effectively. • Partner closely with Product, Engineering leadership, Design, and adjacent engineering teams to deliver cross-functional initiatives and ensure technical decisions reflect both business context and customer needs. • Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences, including leadership stakeholders. • Set and continually raise the technical bar through architecture reviews, code reviews, technical writing, and strong engineering judgment under ambiguity. • Mentor and develop engineers on the team by providing thoughtful feedback, technical coaching, and frameworks that help others do the best work of their careers. • Support hiring by helping attract, interview, and calibrate strong engineering talent as the organization grows. What You’ll Bring • Deep expertise in software architecture, distributed or service-oriented systems, and the engineering tradeoffs involved in building durable, scalable products. We are at a critical inflection point and are investing heavily in building scalable systems for our continued growth. • Strong technical leadership experience as a senior individual contributor or technical lead, with a track record of leading through influence rather than formal management authority. We are a small team that is growing quickly and you will play a crucial role in our success. • Strong product judgment and the ability to translate business or customer needs into pragmatic technical decisions. If you only care about code, this may not be the right role for you. • Experience working across multiple projects or workstreams at the same time while maintaining clarity on priorities, risks, and execution sequencing. Like most jobs, there will be competing priorities, you’ll help set priorities and communicate tradeoffs. • Proven ability to work effectively with cross-functional partners including Product, Design, Security, peer engineering teams, and senior leadership. • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical decisions and tradeoffs to non-technical stakeholders. • A history of mentoring engineers, elevating team performance, and improving engineering craft through design feedback, code reviews, and technical guidance. • Comfort operating in ambiguity and making sound decisions with incomplete information. • You think in terms of platforms and systems, not just features, and you balance security, usability, and scalability in every decision. Required Education/ Experience • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. • 10+ years of professional software engineering experience. • Experience building backend services using at least one modern language, such as Python, Go, Java, TypeScript, or similar. • Experience working with SQL and at least one relational database in production. • Experience building backend services on a cloud platform (AWS, GCP, or Azure), and familiarity with Docker and containerized applications. Preferred Education/ Experience You don’t need all of these, but experience in some of the following will help you be successful quickly: • Experience leading initiatives around API platforms, headless customer experiences, or agent-based customer flows. • Experience with an integrations platform, particularly with an eye to build speed for new integrations. • Experience with PostgreSQL and performance tuning for large datasets. • Experience with graph databases such as Neo4j or interest in learning them. • Experience building or consuming GraphQL backends. • Experience with ETL pipelines and data processing tools (e.g., Airflow-like frameworks, custom ETL jobs, or similar).. • Experience with observability stacks (e.g., Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana) and instrumentation of services. • Experience in cybersecurity, vulnerability management, security analytics, security data platforms, or adjacent domains Required Tech Stack Experience • Backend development in one or more of: Go, Rust, Python, Java, or similar • Designing and operating APIs, services, and asynchronous or event-driven systems • Data modeling and persistence layers for product-grade backend systems • Cloud-native application development and deployment patterns • Observability, reliability, and operational best practices for production services • Technical design documents, architectural proposals, and engineering standards that can be adopted by other teams. What Sets You Apart? • Experience building products or platforms in vulnerability management, exposure management, security telemetry, or related cybersecurity domains • Familiarity with risk scoring, prioritization systems, or data-intensive backend workflows • Experience partnering closely with product managers to define and sequence an MVP without painting the team into a corner. • Experience helping define technical standards or practices adopted beyond your immediate team. • A track record of shaping technical direction more broadly across an organization, with influence extending beyond a single team or domain.
