HDR is looking for a highly motivated and experienced Principal Project Manager to join our growing Northern California Transportation Business Group. As part of HDR’s Transportation Business Group, you’ll help build resilient and sustainable communities and shape the systems that move people and goods safely, efficiently, and sustainably. The ideal candidate will have experience working with transportation agencies and local municipalities in Northern California, delivering a variety of infrastructure improvement projects. Experience in delivering projects with rail and transit infrastructure and rail systems, safety improvements, and grade separations, from feasibility, planning, design, through construction, is desirable. This position will report to the Northern California Transit Market Sector and collaborate with the Northern California Transportation Business Group leadership to provide leadership on multi-discipline projects and programs across multiple geographic areas. Strategic projects are anticipated to include programmatic assistance of large capital programs, traditional project execution and delivery as well as alternative delivery. Additional engagement will include senior technical support, quality oversight, best practice development, project leadership, and principal-level program/project management. The ideal candidate will be familiar with local, state, and federal project development processes and various project delivery models, including design-bid-build, design-build, and CMGC. In the role of Principal Project Manager, we'll count on you to: Direct and coordinate work of single or multidisciplinary teams throughout the project’s lifecycle (from development & initiation to close-out) Responsible for any project assignment regardless of size, visibility, number of disciplines, technical complexity or number of staff. Services provided may include planning/consulting (due diligence/campus planning phase), design (including construction administration and commissioning phases), and O&M/retrofit scopes. The PgmM will also support water sustainability initiatives as aligned by client goals. To execute HDR’s water infrastructure scopes and responsibilities, this role will collaborate with our practices and professional discipline groups across HDR on staff assignments, technical services, activities to continually improve standards and best practices, and implementation of effective quality assurance and quality control procedures. In the role of Northwest Region SH&E Manager, we will count on you to: • Review and approve project Safety Plans and Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) for adequacy, compliance, and alignment with company standards. • Conduct incident investigations, lead root cause analyses, and develop corrective actions and ensure they are assigned, tracked, and closed. • Prepare and deliver safety training programs and verify employee competency. • Conduct field and project site safety reviews, engaging teams to assess culture, identify gaps, and reinforce best practices. • Support audits of project files and SH&E processes to confirm documentation is accurate, complete, and adequate for project scope. • Provide support and direction to safety coordinators and area safety managers in the region. • Provide safety key performance indicators (KPIs) and insights to business leaders to drive performance transparency and accountability. • Partner with business development teams to evaluate new opportunities, identify risks, and integrate safety into planning. • Drive leadership engagement through close partnership and collaboration with leaders at varying levels of the organization. • Review contracts for safety risks and requirements, advising leadership on obligations and mitigation strategies. • Engage subcontractors during prequalification and throughout project execution to ensure alignment with safety expectations. • Promote culture and awareness accountability across a matrixed organization. • Determine project-specific medical surveillance, occupational health clearance, and monitoring requirements. • Serve as a subject matter expert for various safe work procedures, responsible for development, coordination of stakeholder reviews, and ongoing updates. • Strong competency in hazard recognition including confined space, fall protection, excavation and trenching, electrical hazards, and other high-risk tasks and activities. • Maintain knowledge of applicable federal and state regulations (OSHA, MSHA, EPA, DOT, DOD) and industry consensus standards (ANSI, NFPA, etc.). Preferred Qualifications • Master's degree in Occupational Health, Safety, Industrial Hygiene or other related field • Previous SH&E work experience in construction, mining/tunneling, water infrastructure, DOT, Oil and Gas and/or A&E firm • A minimum of 5 years experience managing and directing employees in the course of performing job duties Required Qualifications • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health, Safety, Industrial Hygiene or other related field • A minimum of 10 years experience in Safety Health and Environmental field • Certification in one or more SH&E fields such as (Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), (GSP) Graduate Safety Practitioner, or equivalent SH&E Project/Program Management experience • Extensive knowledge of OSHA & ANSI regulatory standards • Knowledge and application of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint software • Team-oriented with proven oral and written skills to support company SH&E policy and procedural requirements • Experienced and proven leadership skills necessary to effectively manage a staff in support of company SH&E requirements • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must What We Believe HDR is our company. The expected compensation range for this position depends upon skills, experience, education and geographical location. (Stated benefits are for full-time regular positions.
