As the Engineering Manager for the Platform Team, you will lead a team responsible for shared services, reporting, data workflows, and tooling that support the broader engineering organization. You’ll combine people leadership, technical judgment, and delivery execution while also owning the team’s product direction—identifying high-impact opportunities, shaping the roadmap, and translating business needs into clear, actionable work. This is a remote role, candidates may be based anywhere with in the United State of America. Candidates do not need to be local to Atlanta, Georgia.  YOUR DAY TO DAY * Oversee the day-to-day operations of an engineering team. * Coach, mentor, and develop engineers through clear expectations, regular feedback, performance conversations, and career growth planning. * Define and maintain the Platform Team’s product vision and roadmap, ensuring priorities are aligned with business impact, stakeholder needs, technical health, risk, dependencies, and ROI. * Proactively identify project opportunities by understanding stakeholder pain points, operational gaps, technical debt, platform limitations, and company priorities. * Translate ambiguous business, stakeholder, or technical needs into scoped, actionable initiatives in partnership with technical leads and engineers. * Establish clear ownership, timelines, milestones, and follow-through for team commitments, while communicating progress, risks, blockers, and timeline changes early. * Maintain useful operating artifacts, including OKRs, roadmap updates, dashboards, project documentation, postmortems, and status updates. * Promote strong engineering practices around clean code, testing, observability, incident response, postmortems, and reduction of toil. WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING * Outstanding written and verbal communication skills. * Experience managing, coaching, or leading technical teams. * Demonstrated ability to define direction, create clarity, and drive execution in ambiguous environments. * Strong product and strategic judgment, including the ability to identify project ideas, define outcomes, evaluate tradeoffs, and prioritize work. * Demonstrated ability to collaborate with stakeholders to understand business needs and ensure engineering work delivers meaningful impact. * Experience working with data reporting, analytics, or business intelligence systems. * Strong delivery ownership, including the ability to establish timelines, manage dependencies, communicate risk, and hold teams accountable to commitments. BONUS POINTS IF YOU HAVE * Experience leading a platform, infrastructure, data, tooling, internal systems, or shared-services team. * Experience owning roadmap strategy or product direction for an internal platform or technical product. * Experience working in an environment where Engineering owns discovery, prioritization, and roadmap definition without a dedicated Product Manager. Our Platform team builds and maintains the core data platform to support our business, as well as internal tools to support our engineering efforts. We design reliable, scalable services that enable product teams to ship quickly, data teams to operate efficiently, and retailers and shoppers to have seamless experiences.  As a Platform Software Engineer, you’ll build and operate backend services and shared platform systems that power Happy Returns’ products and internal workflows. You’ll focus on designing and maintaining reliable APIs, data-access layers, and service integrations that improve system reliability, performance, and the developer experience across the company. Your day to day * Take ownership of the successful implementation and delivery of new features and projects using a variety of languages and frameworks such as Golang, Python, and PostgreSQL * Build and maintain data pipelines and tooling powering analytics, operational workflows, and product capabilities * Actively participate in architecture discussions and technical design reviews to ensure the scalability, reliability, and security of the Happy Returns system * Enforce clean code standards and excellent coding practices by conducting thoughtful code reviews and upholding a commitment to testing and maintainability * Learn from senior engineers, contribute to knowledge-sharing sessions, and continuously expand your technical and problem-solving skills as you grow into more complex projects * Partner with Product, Data, and other engineering teams to translate their needs into technical solutions * Use AI-assisted development tools to accelerate coding, debugging, testing, and documentation workflows * Support the health and stability of our systems through thoughtful testing monitoring, and debugging What you need to bring * 1-3 years of experience building backend APIs or services * Familiarity with databases and data storage technologies * The ability to efficiently ship clean, maintainable, and well-tested code * A strong interest in joining a highly collaborative environment and working daily with stakeholders across the organization * Curiosity, adaptability and a readiness to explore new technologies, and introduce tools that make the team more effective. * A self-starter mindset with the ability to learn independently and thrive in a fully remote work environment Bonus points if you have * Expertise in multiple server-side languages such as Go or Python * Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and AWS * Experience with data processing frameworks, ETL/ELT pipelines, or streaming systems. * Exposure to performance optimization, distributed systems fundamentals, or event-driven architectures * Interest in e-commerce, logistics, developer experience, or building tooling for other engineers This is a fully remote position and is not limited to candidates located in Georgia Compensation Compensation for this position will be determined based on a variety of factors, including internal equity, geographic location, and the candidate’s job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
