About the Opportunity The Fair Budget Coalition is hiring our first Deputy Director of People and Operations. This new role will shape the systems, culture, and backbone of our organization as we grow the budget justice movement in DC. Working closely with the Executive Director, this is an opportunity to bring your skills in people-centered operations and organizational stewardship to a small but mighty team rooted in racial and economic justice. FBC is seeking a visionary movement leader who feels at home in an organizer community space and brings grounded experience in social justice work to the day-to-day care of our coalition. The Deputy Director of People and Operations will strengthen the infrastructure that supports our people and programs, overseeing human resources, events, finance and operations with transparency, curiosity and humility. This person will ground decisions in values and lived experience, making sure our systems reflect and sustain organizing. The ideal candidate is both a visionary and builder with deep interest in creating structures that embody equity, collaboration and collective care. This is a Full-Time Exempt position that reports to the Executive Director. Key Responsibilities Include: The responsibilities below reflect the core areas of work for the role. In a small and growing team, we share responsibility and adapt as needed, so some responsibilities may evolve as the organization grows. Systems, Technology, and Logistics (Approximately 40% of the role) Build and care for the systems that keep our coalition strong, accountable, and rooted in our values. Lead and support FBC’s events and logistics, including contract management, venue management, and participant logistics. Manage FBC’s list servs and calendars. Oversee technology tools so staff, members, and donors have what they need to engage effectively. Lead development and care of a CRM to track membership, donor engagement, and coalition relationships. Manage website updates and vendor contracts, keeping the site current and accessible. Create clear processes for communications, budgeting, staff development, and issue group coordination. Keep resources and guides up to date so staff, Board, and coalition members can move together with clarity. Manage relationships with vendors and consultants to ensure smooth day-to-day operations. Support staff in using tools and systems, ensuring they are easy to use and aligned with our collective goals. Human Resources and Culture Curation (Approximately 25% of the job) Partner with the ED to maintain a people-first culture grounded in radical authenticity, collaboration, principled struggle and collective care. Collaborate with the ED to shape organizational growth and structure. Create opportunities for staff development, shared learning, and values-driven practice. Build and refine HR processes and tools that help staff and coalition partners thrive. Financial Management (Approximately 20% of the role) Partner with the ED and the Executive Committee (the Board) on financial planning, budgeting, and reporting to ensure organizational sustainability. Oversee day-to-day financial systems, including record-keeping, grants calendar, forecasting, and cash flow. Collaborate with the fiscal sponsor to ensure accurate payroll, HR, benefits, and vendor payments. Manage vendor relationships and contracts. Prepare financial reports and documents (budgets, projections, income statements) for funders and stakeholders. Organizational Responsibilities (Approximately 15% of the job) At FBC, every staff member is part of building power and community. As part of a small, movement-centered team, the Deputy Director of People and Operations will share in the collective responsibilities expected of all staff: Work in person with the advocacy and organizing team one or two days weekly, showing up for events and base-building efforts. Contribute to a collaborative culture by attending weekly staff meetings, team check-ins, annual staff retreats, and helping to build agendas and facilitate conversations. Showing up in community spaces, such as town-halls, Coalition gatherings and offering public testimonies during budget season as part of our shared commitment to budget justice. The Deputy Director of Development & Partnerships will design and carry out strategies that expand our funding base, deepen relationships with donors and funders, and connect resources to the movement for budget justice. Donor Strategy and Engagement (Approximately 15% of the job) Develop and implement a strategy to grow an individual donor base, including small and major donors. Develop and carry out donor engagement strategies that frame donors as partners in the movement, not just sources of revenue. Lead donor-facing efforts such as the annual fundraising gala, year-end campaign, and appreciation activities (events, recognition campaigns, and special updates) in collaboration with staff. Create acknowledgment practices that honor relationships, reflect our values, and build long-term trust. Organizational Development Strategy (Approximately 15% of the job) Work with the ED and Board to align fundraising strategy with FBC’s long-term goals for justice and sustainability.
