Lead day-to-day newsroom operations, assign and edit content, manage staff performance and training, ensure content quality and adherence to theological standards. | 5-8 years newsroom experience with writing/editing, 2-3 years staff management, undergraduate degree in communications or related field, practicing Catholic with knowledge of faith, ability to work flexible hours and travel. | How you will impact the big picture The Managing Editor works with the Editor-in-Chief to manage the day-to-day operations for the Catholic News Agency’s global news website and editorial service, developing content ideas, coordinating writer assignments, and editing articles to ensure journalistic and theological quality control and overseeing publication of content for maximum reach. What you will do In coordination with the EIC, lead the day-to-day operations of the newsroom, including pitching content ideas, assigning stories to writers, and setting daily priorities for the editorial team. Edit content to ensure accuracy, proper tone and vision, and readability. Manage on-site and US remote staff for performance, training, and development to ensure the highest quality production possible. Promote diversity of perspective (within bounds of magisterium) in choice of news coverage, sources and opinion. Review content for legal, ethical, and theological concerns; consult with the Editor-in-Chief and the VP and Editorial Director as needed. Take part in twice daily content and strategy meetings with editorial team as designated by the Editor-in-Chief. Work closely with editorial team to plan, assign, edit and post content in a timely way and optimized for maximum reach. Ensure tasks assigned to the team are completed by established deadlines; adjusts timelines as needed and communicates status to key partners. About you You have a minimum of 5-8 years of prior newsroom experience, including writing and editing; experience covering Church-related news a plus. You have at least 2-3 years of prior experience in a staff management role. You have earned an undergraduate degree in English, Communication, Journalism, or other relevant field required; a Master’s degree is preferred. Practicing Catholic with demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to the faith and EWTN’s mission, including how it relates to stories being covered. Excellent writer and editor with solid news judgment; consistently demonstrate a meticulous level of attention to detail and content accuracy. Proven ability to work in a fast-paced environment, multi-task at a high level, and adjust quickly to changing priorities. Able to work a flexible schedule, including weekend/nights as needed to meet deadlines and cover breaking news. Create and manage digital content and social media for EWTN News, collaborate with editorial teams, optimize content for SEO, and analyze audience engagement. | Minimum 3 years digital media experience, basic SEO and video editing skills, knowledge of social media platforms, excellent communication, and flexibility for schedule and travel, with preference for journalism or communications degree. | HOW YOU WILL IMPACT THE BIG PICTURE: The Digital Media Specialist will work closely with the Digital team, anchors, producers, reporters and assignment editors to coordinate on-air and online news coverage in the Washington, DC office. The candidate will create compelling content for digital platforms (including but not limited to websites, apps, and social media), manage multiple social media accounts, and execute the EWTN News Digital Strategy. WHAT YOU WILL DO: Execute strategies that build brand awareness and increase audience acquisition for the EWTN News shows and services. Create multimedia content; review and copy edit content on a daily basis. Manage various social media accounts simultaneously. Upload and execute search engine and social media optimization for EWTN News shows content on digital platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and others. Create reports and analyze data to measure progress and effectiveness of messaging and social media efforts. Work with Editors and Media Managers to obtain photos and video content to accompany social media posts and website. Collaborate with Managing Editors, Executive Producers, Producers, and Correspondents to create new/original content for social media posts. Collaborate with international EWTN News colleagues across radio, print, and digital in different languages, such as Spanish, Italian, and German. Provide ongoing feedback to improve processes and best practices; stay well-informed of changing trends in viewership, technology, and best practices. Test new social platforms, as needed. ABOUT YOU: You have a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in digital media management, preferably in the field of journalism and/or a newsroom environment. You are a practicing Catholic with demonstrated understanding of the Catholic Church and relevant topics and how it relates to EWTN News’ Mission, Vision, and Values. You are a self-motivated, creative team player with the ability to generate ideas and exercise good editorial judgment. You adherence to the highest standards of journalism including timeliness to meet all deadlines. You have demonstrated basic SEO knowledge; beginning to intermediate video editing skills; familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud and broadcasting software. You possess in-depth knowledge and understanding of a wide variety of social media platforms; pro-active to stay up-to-date on changing trends and new relevant technology. Excellent communication (written, verbal, and listening), interpersonal, and presentation skills. You are able to work a flexible schedule to include some nights and weekends based on breaking News; available for periodic travel, domestically and internationally, in consideration of breaking news and special events. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s Degree in journalism, communications, marketing, media, or similar discipline applicable for a News environment is preferred. Proficiency in a second language is a plus; Italian or Spanish is strongly preferred. Prior journalism, public relations, marketing, or community management experience is preferred.
