Lead complex energy storage project sales, develop proposals, and coordinate across teams to close deals and advance projects. | Requires 8+ years in energy sales with technical electrical knowledge, strong communication, and ability to manage complex deals. | This role has a hybrid work arrangement (2-3 days a week in our NYC office). The Director, Business Development is responsible for leading the advanced sales cycle, converting qualified opportunities into closed deals by building strong client relationships, understanding customer needs, and crafting winning solutions. This role collaborates cross-functionally to develop proposals, negotiate deals, and present opportunities to senior leadership. Beyond early-stage development, this role drives the commercial advancement of projects throughout the development lifecycle, coordinating across technical and legal teams to ensure alignment, mitigate risk, and deliver successful outcomes. This is an individual contributor role and therefore does not have any direct reports but will exercise informal mentorship and guidance to junior level staff. What You’ll Do Sales and Deal Conversion (70%) o Lead the advanced sales cycle by converting qualified opportunities into closed deals. This requires quickly building rapport with prospective customers, understanding a customer’s pain points and implied needs, and crafting a winning solution for the customer and Convergent. o Work across the organization to leverage the skills, resources, and expertise required to evaluate opportunities and develop compelling proposals. o Support our current deal pipeline by helping to negotiate and close deals in advanced stages. Present deals to senior management and prepare materials for review by our investment committee. Partner with Pre-Construction and Legal teams to advance projects from Booked Deal through Development Complete, ensuring commercial alignment, mitigating risk, and driving client urgency to achieve key development milestones. o Maintain strict adherence to internal processes by taking ownership of our CRM system and other internal tracking systems, with a strong emphasis on keeping everything up to date. Cross-Functional Collaboration and Proposal Development (30%) o Work across the organization to leverage the skills, resources, and expertise required to evaluate opportunities and design compelling proposals. o Regularly coordinate with remote teams to ensure alignment and foster collaboration across the organization. Required Qualifications o Bachelor’s Degree. o Have 8+ years of experience successfully originating and closing complex deals with large electricity consumers and/or utilities. o Ability to proactively manage each step of the sales cycle, from lead identification and cold calling to negotiating a definitive contract. o Ability to manage customers and move towards a quick close through. Timely and succinct communication, robust meeting preparation, creating urgency in deals, and finding solutions to complex problems quickly. o Know how to manage a complex sale and lead multiple deals at different stages. o Have a thorough understanding of how electricity market participants are exposed to various system costs. o Have a strong understanding of distributed generation, commercial and industrial electrical systems, or engineering concepts related to industrial processes. o A strong business acumen with the ability to navigate a wide variety of functional areas including the C-suite, pre-construction, operations, procurement, and marketing. o Be organized and numerate. o Excellent communication skills and the ability to put together a cohesive narrative in PowerPoint as well as in written documents. o Strong analytical skills with the ability to dive into models to fully grasp our value proposition and come up with creative solutions for non-standard deals. o Proactive in finding creative and unique solutions for Convergent and customers. o Ability to work under general autonomy; handle problems and deviations with accepted practices and support from manager. o Ability to work in team environment and provide guidance to less experienced team members. o Ability to maintain an executive presence. o Ability to work with cross-functional teams to get customer deliverables. o Alignment with Convergent’s mission, values and a strong interest in the Clean Energy Transition. o 25% travel expected, for conferences, on-site customer engagements, for team events and company-wide meetings. Preferred Qualifications o Understanding of electricity markets, project interconnection procedures, single-line diagrams, basic electrical laws, and standard nomenclature for electrical generating equipment. o Experience using HubSpot. o Technical sales experience. The Director, Procurement is responsible for developing estimating and procurement strategies and leading commercial negotiations for Energy Storage and Storage + Solar PV goods and services in support of Convergent’s development, engineering, construction, and international operations activities. This is a people management role that oversees a category team in the procurement organization. What You’ll Do Procurement Strategy and Contract Negotiation (30%) o Manage the EPC and services category procurement, lead commercial negotiations in support of project and organization objectives. o Work with internal and external counsel to develop and manage equipment supply and vendor agreements to ensure that terms and conditions are in line with market expectations and align with all applicable project agreements. o Manage RFPs to determine best-fit suppliers for construction services based on company objectives. o Analyze bids and qualify suppliers based on quality, cost, and contractual term criteria. Provide recommendations to senior management on supplier strategy. Cross-Functional Collaboration (30%) o Collaborate with pre-construction, engineering, project management, asset management and business development teams to analyze procurement options and to assist in making equipment supply recommendations that best position Convergent’s pipeline of projects. People Management (20%) o Conduct regular one-on-one meetings with direct report(s) and follow Convergent’s performance review cycle, setting clear goals, evaluating outcomes, and addressing performance issues promptly and effectively. o Work with People Operations to handle personnel matters with professionalism, including onboarding, growth, training, hiring, resolving conflicts and making informed recommendations on corrective actions, and staff transitions when necessary. o Foster a positive team culture that embodies Convergent’s values. Post-Execution Contract and Supplier Management (10%) o Facilitate management of contracts post-execution to ensure all obligations are administered and fulfilled on time, on budget, and per project requirements; ensure effective transition and handoff of contract activities to project management team. o Maintain existing relationships with key equipment suppliers, manufacturers, integrators, emerging technology companies, etc., and endeavor to evaluate, establish, and cultivate new relationships with strategic partners. Market Expansion and Compliance (10%) o Develop procurement / supply chain initiatives in new markets and areas of operation in line with compliance, safety, and regulatory requirements, including qualifying and auditing suppliers in collaboration with technical and compliance teams. o Analyze market trends and government/regulatory conditions and assess their impact on future activities to provide strategy recommendations to leadership. o Attend tradeshows to make new relationships with potential vendors. o Continue to build and enhance internal and third-party supported estimating capabilities for all solar and storage projects. o Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Finance, Supply Chain Management, or related discipline. o 8 - 12 years of purchasing experience in the energy industry (e.g., solar, wind, BESS, traditional generation, etc.) o Relevant experience managing EPC or construction contracts, field experience or direct project management of large energy infrastructure projects is a strong plus. o Proficient in standard estimating, accounting, and construction management software and tools. o Must have a high level of experience with EPC contracts, Supply Purchase Agreements, and accounting practices. o Must be proficient in Solar and Energy storage equipment and suppliers. o Strong negotiation skills are essential. o Strategic procurement and purchasing experience. o Top-tier commercial negotiation skills, financial acumen and an understanding of the legal aspects of procurement. o Comfort with ambiguity, complexity and a willingness to learn. o Superior oral and written communication skills. o Excellent organizational, interpersonal, time management, and problem-solving skills o Relationship management both internally and externally to ethically drive to corporate success o Maintain a global and enterprise-wide critical thinking outlook to formulate recommendations and reach complex decisions that deliver results. o Risk Management experience. o Established experience managing teams or divisions in procurement, estimating, strategic sourcing, or a related field. o Alignment with Convergent’s mission and values: Continuous Improvement, Diversity Equity and Inclusion, Ethical Governance, Safety, Sustainability, Collaboration, Ownership, Resilience, and a strong interest in the Clean Energy Transition. o 20% travel expected for company events, supplier relations, negotiations, and as needed.
