Assist technical staff on water/wastewater engineering projects, review drawings, evaluate project sites, and prepare reports. | Pursuing a degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering with some coursework or interest in water/wastewater design, basic AutoCAD skills, and good communication skills. | Overview We are seeking a highly-motivated intern to join our Water/Wastewater Engineering Group for Summer 2026 in our Syracuse, NY office. Responsibilities Our interns will assist technical staff on day-to-day projects. Read and review project drawings and plans. Confer with engineers about preparing plans. Use AutoCAD software under the charge of Engineers. Evaluate pre-construction field conditions. Observe project sites and evaluate contractors’ work to detect problems with a design. Prepare reports and document project activities and data. Prepare analyses from collected data. Set up and help maintain project files and records. In addition to the work-centered program, we also offer robust internship programming, which includes opportunities to work with other interns, learn about other areas of the business, and develop valuable communication skills and networking connections. Qualifications Pursuing a Bachelor of Science or master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering or a related program. Class work and interest in potable water and wastewater design work is preferred. Must have reliable transportation to the office. Basic understanding of AutoCAD preferred. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Possess solid problem-solving skills. Must be able to work in a high-paced environment. Ability to read, write, and understand English for purposes of comprehending written job-related communications and verbal instructions and interactions. This individual will manage, direct, and supervise the work efforts of assigned staff and coordinate the technical and managerial direction regarding scope, schedule, quality, and budget of projects. Responsibilities • Prepare effective work plans and labor budgets for approval by Department Manager. • Monitor time schedules and capital cost budgets on projects to satisfy the client as well as control work and productivity. • Attend and participate in public meetings (including night meetings), project coordination meetings, public engagement, and other meetings for public and private clients. • Oversee the preparation of master plans, land use plans, reexamination reports, zoning codes, development review letters, and other planning reports for public and private clients. • Responsible for the quality control/quality assurance process on all assigned projects. • Strive to achieve predetermined goals for profit, productivity targets, and schedule of deliverables. • Participates in formulating and coordinating proposals and provides other marketing support, including business development and cross-selling for other disciplines. • Identify the project team, work packages and tasks, evaluation methods, productivity targets, schedule of deliverables, and effort needed on projects. • Hold team meetings ensuring procedures governing review and approval of projects are followed prior to submission of completed work. • Negotiate with clients on any scope changes relative to project budgets and schedules subject to supervisors' approval. • Coordinate and communicate effectively with all employees involved in the project to ensure high utilization rates (i.e. project team meetings). • Review monthly revenue and cost reports to ensure projects are being completed at the pre-determined goal. • Ensure everyone involved is working in accordance with all project planning and profit control procedures. • Ensure that all scope revisions affecting the project schedule and/or budget are discussed with the client. • Solicit help and involvement from Department Managers and any other managers to troubleshoot any technical problems. • Work efficiently with the Billing Department to authorize and transmit invoices to client. Follow up with clients for timely payments. • Mentor junior staff in learning sound technical and business practices and enhancing corporate objectives. • Adhere to Health and Safety program and all applicable SOPs. Qualifications • Bachelor's Degree in related field. Master’s Degree preferred but not required. • 6-10+ years in related field. • Professional Planning (P.P.) licensure and certification by American institute of Certified Planners (A.I.C.P.). • Valid driver’s license preferred. Must demonstrate ability to travel to client locations. • Demonstrate computer skills, knowledge and acumen (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Suite, ArcGIS, etc.). • Ability to learn and apply technical skills and knowledge. • Demonstrate extensive, diversified, and complex knowledge of planning concepts, theories, principles and practices. • Demonstrate advanced investigative, analytical, and research skills. • Ability to coordinate the work activities for multiple functions to ensure satisfying delivery. • Responsible for all aspects of the project lifecycle: planning, scope definition, design, execution, and delivery. • Ability to effectively perform as a key team leader (demonstrate collaboration and respect for others; contribute; lead by example, etc.). • Demonstrate advanced technical and non-technical writing, editing, and proofreading skills. • Ability to track progress against milestones, budgetary guidelines, and other key performance indicators, and prepare reports to senior management. • Ability to assist with the selection, negotiation, and managing of all activities regarding external clients. • Ability to read, write and understand English for purposes of comprehending written job-related communications and verbal instructions and interactions.
