Support and modernize the City’s communication systems, including transitioning to new platforms, ensuring system reliability, and collaborating with infrastructure and security teams. | Requires at least five years of experience in telecommunications or Unified Communications, with specific skills in VoIP, system administration, and supporting collaboration platforms. | The City of Bowie is seeking a Unified Communications Specialist to support and modernize the City’s enterprise communication systems. This position plays a key role in transitioning the City from a legacy Avaya PBX environment to a modern Unified Communications platform that integrates with Microsoft Teams and other collaboration tools. The successful candidate will work closely with network, infrastructure, and security teams to ensure reliable, secure, and resilient communication services for City staff. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: · Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Telecommunications, Computer Science, or a closely related field · A minimum of five years of professional experience in telecommunications, VoIP, or Unified Communications system administration Certain combinations of relevant education, training, and experience may be considered in lieu of the above- listed qualifications. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: · Experience supporting or administering Unified Communications platforms such as Avaya, Microsoft Teams, or similar systems · Knowledge of VoIP technologies, SIP protocols, and call routing concepts · Familiarity with LAN and WAN fundamentals and the ability to collaborate with network infrastructure teams · Experience administering mobile device management platforms such as Apple Business Manager and IBM MaaS360 · Understanding of cybersecurity best practices and compliance frameworks such as NIST and CJIS · Experience supporting call center platforms, Microsoft Teams Rooms, or other enterprise collaboration technologies · Relevant certifications such as Microsoft Teams Administrator Associate, Avaya Implementation Specialist, or ITIL Foundation KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: · Lead and support the transition from a legacy Avaya PBX system to modern Unified Communications platforms · Integrate Unified Communications solutions with Microsoft Teams and other City collaboration tools · Collaborate with IT infrastructure and security teams to ensure system reliability, proactive maintenance, and security compliance · Administer mobile device management solutions for City-issued iPhones and iPads · Coordinate with vendors and provide technical guidance on Unified Communications modernization and long-term planning · Deliver Tier 2 and Tier 3 troubleshooting support for communication systems · Develop and maintain system documentation and provide end-user training · Support disaster recovery, business continuity, and security planning for communication services KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: · Strong technical knowledge of Unified Communications and VoIP environments · Ability to troubleshoot complex, multi-platform communication systems · Ability to explain technical concepts clearly to non-technical users · Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills · Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously · Strong collaboration and communication skills · Proactive mindset with the ability to advise on modernization and future improvements SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: · May be required to work on-site to support communication systems and projects · May be required to work extended hours during system upgrades, outages, or emergency operations PHYSICAL DEMANDS: This position may require lifting, bending, operating vehicles, and working in a fast-paced on-site environment.
