Work Schedule and Location: This is typically a Monday – Friday, 8 hour schedule with flexibility to work occasionally beyond the scheduled work day. This is an on-site position primarily based at the Community Veterinary Clinic. Occasional flexibility in reporting to other ASPCA locations throughout the Greater LA Area is required based on operational need. Reporting Structure: You will report to the Community Veterinary Clinic (CVC) Director (solid line) for all nonmedical job functions and to the Medical Director (dotted line) for all duties related to veterinary medicine. Responsibilities: Job responsibilities include but are not limited to: People Leadership (35%) • Oversee and monitor medicine and surgery provided at the ASPCA’s CVC according to CM’s standard operating procedures and guidelines • Train veterinarians in high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN) techniques and other medical protocols (the ASPCA’s Learning & Development team provides “train the trainer” workshops to develop facilitation skills) • Be a consistent and visible presence on the floor to answer questions, make timely adjustments, offer support, receive/give feedback, lend a hand, and foster understanding and commitment to ASPCA’s mission • Support a positive work culture of respect, belonging and teamwork through regular 1:1s, recognition, supervision, developmental coaching, performance evaluation and feedback • Partner with colleagues to achieve or exceed the ASPCA’s impact goals • Partner with the ASPCA’s Talent Acquisition Team to hire staff and per diem veterinarians; onboard new team members • Ensure that all team members have received training and mastered the skills to handle patients in a low stress manner, and that they implement these handling techniques consistently. They will also collaboratively design and conduct research and analyses that illuminate current and future trends in the animal welfare landscape and aim to directly influence attitudinal and behavior change by key stakeholders in that landscape. Who We Are The Strategy team is a thoughtful and mission-driven team that collaborates across the organization to develop, refine, and execute the ASPCA’s organization-wide priorities through strategy, impact measurement, research, and planning. Our work addresses a wide range of topics that directly impact our internal programs as well as the field of animal welfare. What You’ll Do Program Learning and Impact Measurement Focus The person in this position is responsible for the development of program logic models, supporting measurement plans, and impact metrics. They will partner with program teams to execute strategies, aligning on measurement plans, and evaluating programs that support the ASPCA’s goals to improve the lives of animals. They will conduct in-depth studies across ASPCA programming to generate credible measures of the programming’s current performance and to determine what efforts are most effectively and efficiently resulting in desired impacts. As a member of the Strategy team, the Director, IMDS will lead the design and development of program learning logic models and program evaluations in collaboration with ASPCA program teams, and subject matter experts, and with external partner organizations and other external stakeholders. In addition to strong program evaluation, research, and analytical skills, this position requires an individual with a collaborative work style, experience in project management, and the ability to lead teams in a matrix structure, often without direct authority. Candidates may come from a diverse range of disciplinary or applied backgrounds, as long as these provide most or all of the desired skills and experience listed below in some form. Work activities may include literature review, planning, research/evaluation design, managing research projects, data collection and analysis, creation of peer-reviewed publications and other publications/presentations for key audiences, participating in initiatives to advance external research, and providing expert input and insight for ASPCA projects and programs. In addition, the Director will work with colleagues and relevant teams to plan how program learning, external trends, and research results will be used and communicated internally and externally. The Director, IMDS reports directly to the Senior Director of Impact Measurement and Data Science and has no direct reports. The VP partners with the Criminal Practice & Investigations (CPI) and National Field Response (NFR) departments to successfully operationalize criminal cases and meet the organization’s annual case response goals. In collaboration with CPI, NFR, and the other teams critical to the success of cruelty response work (including Behavior Sciences, Relocation, Placement, and Shelter & Rehabilitation teams), the VP helps to ensure the evidentiary strength of these cases; the efficient and effective use of departmental and organizational resources; the welfare of animal victims; and that local stakeholders gain boots-on-the ground experience that will better empower them to respond to animal cruelty and animal fighting in their communities. In carrying out this work, the VP ensures that forensic assistance is provided to law enforcement agencies for the successful investigation and prosecution of animal cruelty and animal fighting cases that the ASPCA deploys on, whether that forensic work is carried out directly by the department’s forensic veterinarians and analysts, or through their supervision and/or guidance of other ASPCA veterinarians, professional responders, and local veterinarians. In addition, the VP ensures forensic assistance is provided to law enforcement on strategic, non-ASPCA animal-related cases handled by staff at the ASPCA Veterinary Forensic Science Center (AVFSC) in Gainesville. In support of the ASPCA’s partnership with the NYPD, the VP oversees the work of the New York City-based veterinary forensics team, which provides forensic assistance to the NYPD and NYC District Attorney’s Offices for the successful investigation and prosecution of animal-related cases. For both national and NYPD animal cruelty and animal fighting cases, the VP oversees all aspects of the department’s forensics work, including forensic examinations, report-writing, analysis of other animal-related evidence, and testimony for hearings and trials, ensuring close collaboration with CPI attorneys. The VP guides the teaching, extern- and internship programs in NYC and Gainesville, as well as external training aimed at veterinary practitioners nationwide, to ensure this work achieves the greatest impact for the field and is aligned with organizational goals and priorities.
