Proficiency in at least one programming language, preferably Ruby, and relevant production experience with large-scale Rails applications is required. Strong understanding of observability tools and hands-on experience with containerization and orchestration tools is also necessary.

About the Role: As an Intermediate Software Engineer, you will play a key role in scaling and improving Zipline’s cloud infrastructure, CI/CD systems, and developer experience. You will help design automation solutions, manage containerized environments, and build tools that enable our application development teams to deliver software efficiently and reliably. This role blends hands-on cloud operations with infrastructure development. What you will do: Partner with teams across engineering to improve platform quality, reliability, and developer experience. Enhance system observability through improved monitoring, alerting, and telemetry. Optimize database performance and scalability (primarily PostgreSQL). Collaborate with developers primarily using Ruby on Rails to embed DevOps best practices into the development lifecycle. Build, maintain, and optimize CI/CD pipelines to ensure scalable, reliable, and faster deployments. Implement Infrastructure as Code using Terraform to manage cloud resources. Manage and scale containerized infrastructure on Kubernetes. Support and evolve cloud environments on AWS (experience with GCP or Azure a plus). Participate in on-call rotations and provide support for critical production issues. What we look for: Proficiency in at least one programming language (Ruby preferred; Typescript/ JavaScript a plus). Relevant production experience with large-scale rails applications Proficiency with at least one major cloud provider (AWS preferred). Strong understanding of observability tools (such as Datadog and Sentry) and practices. Hands-on experience with containerization and orchestration tools (Docker, Kubernetes, ECS). Strong knowledge of CI/CD tools (like CircleCI, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI). Experience with Infrastructure as Code (like Terraform, Pulumi, Ansible). This role has a minimum annual salary within Canada of $128,000 CAD and a maximum of $192,000 CAD. This role has a minimum annual salary in the USA of $132,000 and a maximum of $198,000 USD. The broad salary ranges reflect the growth someone will experience in the role—from developing skills to reaching expertise within their career level. We’ve found that hiring team members with the expectation of being accomplished in the role sets them up for success, which for this position on the USA band means a starting salary of $148,500 USD Within the Canadian band, $144,000 CAD. Salaries below this point typically reflect someone with potential but still building the necessary skills, while salaries above are for individuals already excelling in the role, with a deep understanding of Zipline’s impact on customers, product, and company. At Zipline, you’ll continue to have career development conversations with your manager to ensure your compensation grows as you advance. Our salary ranges are determined by market, factoring in our revenue and employee size, paying competitively at the 75th percentile. In higher cost of living markets, we apply 5-10% multipliers on our ranges, depending on the location, to maintain competitive compensation and reflective of the increased expenses our team members face in those areas. While we primarily hire in Canada and the USA, we are a global employer, and all hiring regions will use the same methodology to determine fair and transparent pay.
