At the Council of the Great Lakes Region (CGLR), our purpose is to leverage our unique cross-border, non-partisan structure to create the first sustainable region in the world. We are doing this by accelerating the transition to a sustainable future by uniquely bringing diverse governmental, business, academic, and non-profit perspectives together as one to explore and solve the region’s most pressing socio-economic and environmental challenges. Job Summary: The Marketing and Communications Manager will initiate, coordinate, and develop marketing and communications activities, campaigns, and media releases to amplify CGLR’s messaging and regional voice, all strategically aligned with CGLR’s mission and its programs. Supervisory Responsibilities: • Oversee the daily workflow of the Marketing and Communications department. • Oversee synchronicity between CGLR’s external communications and its programming. • Support recruitment and supervise communications and social media interns; managing their completion of projects. Key Results in first 6 months: • Action and implement a content strategy for CGLR, including online Great Lakes Insights articles, newsletter/email, social channels, media announcements, and online event production. • Maintain and implement CGLR’s overall brand strategy, while supporting the development and execution of sub-brands, with particular focus on and ownership of the Great Lakes Sustainable Growth Forum brand (GLSGF), and the development and execution of the other sub-brands, such as the Great Lakes Higher Education Consortium, Circular Great Lakes, Great Lakes WISE, and ALUS Defiance, among other new programming that may develop. • Develop a deep and passionate understanding of CGLR’s issues and ecosystem, in order to position the organization as a thought leader within the region, a known source for all issues relevant to stakeholders that leverages the content of other partner and non-partner organizations to define the conversation, placing CGLR as the go-to resource for sustainable development across the region, and in North America. • Work with CGLR’s leadership to initiate event planning for virtual webinar series as well as the 2026 Great Lakes Sustainable Growth Forum and ensure increased exposure and attendance. • Develop creative and attention-grabbing graphics for promoting CGLR’s programs, projects, and events. • Develop an in-depth level of control of CGLR’s website management, ensuring it is always up to date and communicates relevant information in the best way that resonates with the CGLR audience. Responsibilities • Expand CGLR’s reputation as the ‘go to’ for businesses, governments, academia, and nonprofit sectors in the region for relevant and reliable information, by: • Curating content of interest with Great Lakes Insights article posts focused on key Great Lakes sectors and topics of interest to CGLR and its audience; and promoting the posts across social media to amplify and drive traffic to the site. • Curating meaningful conversations and content to attract, engage, and retain the interest of key businesses in the region. • Curate thought-provoking graphics and posts that draw stakeholders to CGLR programs and events. • Position CGLR as a leader in the dissemination of research and news pertaining to relevant Great Lakes issues by staying abreast of current events and media coverage. • Plan and execute content pipelines for all forms of marketing communication including email, website, social media, brochures, and events. • Manage the CGLR websites. Review the website in its entirety from time to time to ensure there are no broken links, content stays fresh and up to date, and new programs, events and activities are added to the relevant web pages. • Manage the X (Twitter), Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube accounts and actively post relevant organizational and industry content; • Manage socials, with a priority to LinkedIn, by posting regular content and engaging business leaders directly about programs, events, sponsorship and partnership opportunities. Ensure messages to the account are responded to within 2 business days. • Execute the brand guide and brand voice consistently across all organizational platforms and channels. • Prepare and disseminate an annual survey in coordination with the Programs and Development teams. • Support the preparation and design of organizational and program annual reports • Support the planning and implementation of a marcomm strategy for CGLR events, including the monthly webinar series and the Great Lakes Sustainable Growth Forum. • Identify key stakeholders and potential partners from event registrations, and highlight that information with the Program and Development teams on a per-event basis. • Manage CGLR’s Salesforce CRM, importing contacts and creating reports to help better understand our audience Required Skills/Abilities: • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. • Demonstrated supervisory and leadership skills. • Ability to create, implement, and monitor budgets. • Thorough understanding of principles and methods used to promote and amplify key messaging. • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, and related software. • Well-versed in using MailChimp, WordPress and Hootsuite software, as well as comfortable in using Salesforce, Monday.com and other CRM or project management tools • Demonstrated experience successfully managing communications campaigns • Passionate about CGLR’s vision for the Great Lakes region to be the first sustainable region in the world.
