Our Technology Designer / Project Manager is responsible for planning, designing, and overseeing the implementation of Technology systems in educational and commercial facilities. This role requires expertise in developing future-ready technology infrastructure and systems, ensuring alignment with educational goals, operational requirements, and compliance standards. The designer collaborates closely with educators, architects, engineers, and administrators to create environments that foster learning, safety, and efficiency. Essential Responsibilities: • Planning and Programming • Collaborate with school administrators, educators, and architects to assess technology and security systems in the school buildings. • Document the district and building priorities with budgets and scope of work defined. • Attend design coordination meetings with clients, architects, and engineers to establish Owner’s requirements for the buildings. • Attend design milestone meetings at conceptual and Schematic Design (SD) to confirm and document all technologies and security needs and priorities. • Technology Infrastructure and System Design: • Develop comprehensive technology plans for K-12 facilities, incorporating IT, security, and Technology systems. • Design networked systems to support dynamic digital learning environments. • Attend design milestone meetings at Design Documents (DD) and Construction Documents (CD) to confirm and document all technologies and security needs and priorities • Ensure all technologies and security requirements are fully coordinated with the design team and school’s administration team. • Structured Cabling Systems • Networks Switches, Wireless Networks, & UPS • Server and Storage Systems • Telephone Systems • Master Clock System • Public Address System • Classroom Audio/Visual Systems • Sound Systems • Audio/Visual Systems • Large Group Area, Gymnasiums, Cafeterias, Band Rooms • Collaboration & Conference Room A/V • Security Systems • Video Surveillance • Access Control & Entry Intercoms • Intrusion Alarm • Mass Notification / Emergency Alert System • Collaboration and Consultation: • Engage with school administrators and educators to identify technological needs and future objectives. • Partner with architects and engineering teams to integrate technology and security into building designs. • System Implementation and Oversight: • Specify, procure, and manage the installation of technologies and security systems, and communication tools. • Monitor construction and implementation to ensure adherence to plans, budgets, and timelines. • Compliance and Innovation: • Ensure all designs meet applicable building codes, accessibility requirements, and technology standards. • Stay informed on emerging trends in educational technology and apply innovative solutions. • Project Management: • Prepare cost estimates, project scopes, and timelines for technology-related initiatives. • Oversee vendor selection and contract management for technology systems. • Attend Owner, Architect, & Construction Manager (OAC) meetings. • Attend status meeting with owners and vendors. • Manage overall project financials • Manage overall project status and coordination Quality Assurance: • Design and approve technology system documents and deliverables. • Conduct quality control checks to ensure accuracy and completeness of designs. • Address and resolve any technical issues that arise during construction. Mentorship and Leadership: • Mentor and train junior designers and support staff. • Promote a culture of continuous learning and professional development within the team. • Lead design review meetings and provide constructive feedback. Client Interaction: • Interface with clients to understand project requirements and design technical solutions. • Ensure client satisfaction through effective communication and project management. Other: • Performs other duties, as assigned. Supervision Received: General Direction: Plans and arranges own work. Uses a wide range of procedures to accomplish assigned objectives. Education & Experience: • 5+ years of experience planning, designing, and project managing technology system implementations; required ideally in K-12 or commercial facilities; preferred • 2+ years of experience with technology and security designs early in the architectural design process from Schematic Design (SD) to Design Development (DD); plus, • 2+ years of account management including overall management and financial tracking responsibilities for all technology and security projects for a single client; plus • Proficiency in technology system and IT infrastructure design, preferred • Proficiency in network systems, PA systems, clock systems, and audio visual infrastructure; plus. • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field; preferred • Strong communication and documentation skills; ability to engage with non-technical school personnel. • Ability to manage time across multiple projects and meet deadlines in a collaborative remote or hybrid team environment. • Proven track record of successfully managing and delivering complex projects. • Demonstrated creative thinking, design ability, and technical proficiency. Licenses and Certifications: One or more licenses and/or certification(s). • BICSI Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD); a plus • BICSI certified Network Technology Specialist (NTS); a plus • Avixa Certified Technology Specialist (CTS); a plus • Avixa Certified Technology Specialist - Designer (CTS-D); a plus • Avixa Audiovisual Network Professional (ANP), a plus Other Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: • Strong understanding of technology codes, standards, and regulations. Ability to handle multiple projects and meet tight deadlines. • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) • Expertise in tools such as Bluebeam REVU; preferred • Expertise in tools AutoCAD, REVIT, and/or Building Information Modeling (BIM); a plus • Ability and willingness to travel to project sites in Michigan as needed. Preferred Qualifications: • Knowledge of two or more technologies including structured cabling, network infrastructure, security cameras, access control, intrusion alarm, mass notification, audio/visual systems, public address systems, and/or wireless clock systems • Experience in managing client relationships and business development. • Experience designing for K-12 and other commercial buildings / facilities. This may include premise wiring design, Local Area and Wide Area Network design, wireless network design, audio/visual presentation systems and broadcast video.
