The opportunity - Manager, Union Payroll (Commercials) (Remote - USA) The Manager of Union Payroll (Commercials) oversees all aspects of the Commercials Union Payroll team, including payroll processing, remittances, and other union payroll operational tasks. This role serves as the subject-matter expert for Commercials, with deep knowledge of AICP and PHBP agreements, benefit funds, and union terms, and acts as the key operational decision-maker for Commercials union payroll matters. This role partners closely with Product and cross-functional leaders to manage Commercials payroll operations, respond to audits, resolve customer and internal escalations, and ensure high-quality, compliant payroll delivery while meeting all KPIs. What you'll do: Lead the Commercials Union Payroll Operations team in all aspects of daily operations, ensuring KPIs for Commercials union payroll processing and remittance are consistently met or exceeded. Serve as the primary expert for Commercials union payroll, including AICP and PHBP contracts, benefit funds, rates, fringes, and union terms. Ensure team members meet or exceed standards for quality, accuracy, timeliness, and compliance specific to Commercials payroll. Set clear expectations and conduct ongoing performance management and coaching conversations with team members. Act as a key decision-maker for Commercials union operational matters, including exception handling, escalations, and complex payroll scenarios. Respond to and manage internal and external escalations, audits, and client issues related to Commercials union payroll. Partner cross-functionally with Product, Labor Relations, Customer Success, and other stakeholders to drive collaboration, continuous improvement, and scalable Commercials workflows. Partner closely with the Product team to provide input on tooling, automation, and workflows needed to improve efficiency and support growth in Commercials payroll. Maintain a strong hands-on understanding of payroll calculations, including the ability to manually review and validate union payroll calculations. Provide input and recommendations on hiring, promotions, performance actions, and terminations for the Commercials team. Participate in strategic planning with leadership to support growth and organizational maturity of the Commercials union payroll function. Recommend and implement new processes, tools, roles, and responsibilities to optimize productivity and service quality. Ensure team documentation is current, accurate, and that team members are cross-trained to support business continuity. What you'll have: Minimum 5+ years of payroll operations experience, with significant experience in union Commercials payroll. 2–3 years of people management experience, either as a team lead or manager with direct oversight of payroll operations. Deep, hands-on knowledge of AICP and PHBP agreements, Commercials benefit funds, and associated union terms. Proven experience executing or overseeing Commercials union payroll processing and remittances. Strong understanding of production union payroll processes within the Commercials space. Ability to calculate and validate Commercials union timecards manually, without reliance on software. Demonstrated success managing escalations and resolving complex payroll issues. Track record of implementing process improvements and efficiencies that improve customer outcomes. Proactive, self-starter with the ability to drive day-to-day operations and grow into full managerial responsibilities (coaching, goal setting, hiring, performance management). Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively across teams and with clients.
