• Labor Category Description The Journeyman Network and Computer Systems Administrator is a proficient, hands-on IT professional responsible for the day-to-day operation, maintenance, and administration of an organization's computer systems and network infrastructure. This role ensures the stable and reliable operation of servers, network devices, and enterprise services. Working under the general supervision of senior administrators or IT leadership, the Journeyman Administrator independently performs a wide range of standard administration tasks, including system monitoring, patch management, backup and recovery, and user account management. They are a primary resource for troubleshooting and resolving system and network-level issues escalated from the help desk. • Typical Task List Server And Systems Administration Install, configure, and maintain physical and virtual servers, primarily running Windows Server operating systems. Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of server hardware, resources, and key processes. Apply operating system patches, security updates, and service packs in accordance with the organization's patch management cycle and security guidelines (e.g., IAVM). Manage and maintain enterprise storage solutions, including provisioning storage and managing permissions. Network Infrastructure Administration Configure, manage, and maintain network hardware, including switches, routers, and firewalls, based on established designs and procedures. Monitor network performance and traffic to identify and resolve routine connectivity issues and performance bottlenecks. Implement and manage network security measures as directed, such as updating access control lists (ACLs) and ensuring port security. User Account And Access Management Create, manage, modify, and delete user accounts, security groups, and distribution lists within Microsoft Active Directory. Administer file and folder permissions on network shares to ensure users have appropriate access to data based on approved requests. Security And Compliance Implement and maintain security configurations on assigned systems in accordance with DoD Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs). Perform regular vulnerability scans using approved tools (e.g., ACAS/Nessus) and assist with the remediation of identified vulnerabilities. Implement and manage system backup and recovery procedures, performing periodic restoration tests to verify backup integrity. • Minimum Qualifications / Requirements Experience A minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of hands-on experience in a systems administration, network administration, or a similar IT infrastructure role. Certifications (Baseline) Must possess a current CompTIA Security+ CE certification (or higher) to meet DoD 8140 requirements for IAT Level II. Certifications (Computing Environment) Must obtain a relevant CE certification within six months of assignment. Desired Certifications Include Microsoft Certified: Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) CompTIA Network+ Security Clearance Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoW Security Clearance Technical Skills Proficiency in managing Microsoft Windows Server environments and Active Directory. Solid understanding of networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, and VLANs. Hands-on experience with virtualization technologies (e.g., VMware vSphere). Familiarity with vulnerability scanning tools and the patch management process. Experience with backup and recovery software and procedures.
