Reports To: General Manager Secondary Relationships: Grocery Purchasing Manager, Assistant General Manager, Opening Manager, Closing Manager, Chief Marketing Officer Supervisees: Assistant Grocery Department Manager, Grocery Buyers, Grocery Team Members Position Summary: The Grocery Manager is responsible for product purchasing, employee management, task delegation, merchandising and customer service across the entire Provisions department. This position has direct responsibility for Center Store business planning, merchandising, sampling, costing, and pricing. This position has supervisory authority over Assistant Grocery Manager and all Grocery Team Members and Buyers. This position has hiring and firing abilities. Essential Duties & Responsibilities: • Receive and check orders, submit invoices, and manage credits/returns. • Ensure product is at the correct price point for an overall 38-40% blended margin. • Budget Department labor for a 4% target, as directed by Upper Management, and schedule employees according to maximize operational efficiency and customer experience. • Supervise and ensure products are stocked well and rotated according to product “best by” or “sell by” dates. • Promptly remove products that are past their “best by” or “sell by” dates from sale to customers. • Supervise and ensure Grocery display areas are properly maintained and cleaned using a periodic maintenance/cleaning checklist. • Supervise and ensure the maintenance and cleanliness of all Grocery backstock areas, including dry backstock, freezer(s) and cooler(s). • Supervise and ensure Grocery backstock areas are organized according to agreed-upon principles, to facilitate the ease of ordering and stocking. • Place orders to maintain appropriate inventory levels to minimize out-of-stocks, including endcaps, holiday and seasonal displays, as well as all other display areas over which the Grocery department has ordering and stocking responsibilities in part or wholly. • Set appropriate specials during specials weeks to feature products. • Ensure communication of out-of-stocks to customers by supervising the proper and timely use of correct signage. • Communicate to the team and highlight new and specialty items. • Supervise Grocery Department Supervisors, Buyers, and Team Members and delegate tasks as needed. • Coordinate appropriate department signage with the Chief Marketing Officer or other designated Marketing staff. • Coordinate product with the Chief Marketing Officer or other designated Marketing staff for demo and sampling. • Provide consistent, timely, and measurable performance feedback to Grocery Supervisors, Buyers, and Team Members. • Publish department schedules for Grocery team in accordance with operational expectations and with appropriate lead time as determined by the Chief Human Resources Officer or other designated HR staff. • Routinely evaluate staffs’ time cards, ensuring accuracy and compliance with the Company’s time & attendance policies by promptly investigating and correcting punch errors or abnormalities. • Submit time card approvals in a time fashion as determined by the Chief Human Resources Officer or other designated payroll staff. • Manage the maintenance of shelf tags, in aisle signage, and displays. • Schedule and chair quarterly department meetings. • Attend management meetings. • Ensure staff compliance with all Company policies and procedures. • Maintain predictable, consistent, and punctual attendance for scheduled shifts. Other Responsibilities & Duties: • Ensure follow-up of department phone calls and messages. • Assist in checking in Provision department orders. • Assist customers throughout other departments and ensure excellent customer service. • Follow-up on Customer Requests as designated. • Order products for the Center Store Grocery Department. • Attend local food shows as requested by General Manager and place purchase orders for products on show deals. Required Qualifications & Skills: • Good communication skills, both oral and written. • Excellent customer service abilities. • Positive attitude. • Experience working as a contributing and effective team member. • Excellent work ethic that emphasizes efficiency and precision. • Ability to take direction and follow instructions. • Ability to switch tasks efficiently and effectively. • Willingness to learn new skills. • Must have detailed Grocery product knowledge. • Safe food handling training and experience is preferred. • Ability to train new personnel. • Ability to generate turns and product movement. • Ability to optimize product mix for profit margin overall program diversity. • Ability to process invoices and returns. Special Considerations: • Ability to regularly lift up to 50 lbs, and occasionally up to 75lbs. • Working conditions include a fast-paced retail environment that involves long intervals of standing, crouching, and reaching while moving product. • Frequent outdoor work required; exposure to seasonal Michigan weather conditions including hot and cold temperatures and inclement weather. • Exposure to cold temperatures (freezers and coolers) and hot temperatures (ovens). • Language Skills: high. • Mathematical Skills: high. • Reasoning Ability: high. • Equipment used: price gun; price scanner; cardboard baler; ice machine; pallet jack; forklift; dollies; handcarts. • Computer skills: POS System; Google Drive; email; Microsoft Office Suite; Google phones; Zebra mobile ordering computer.
