Full Description

Position Summary The Church Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and hospitable environment across all Wesley Memorial UMC facilities. This includes Sanctuary and offices, Bridges Preschool and the Family Life Center. This role includes early-morning coverage and may require occasional adjustments for evenings, weekends, or special events. The Custodian operates with limited supervision and works closely with the Pastor, SPRC, and Trustees to support the ongoing needs of the campus. Primary Responsibilities General Facility Cleaning & Sanitation • Using appropriate equipment, the custodian will sweep, mop, scrub, buff, wax,vacuum, all floors, edges, baseboards, and corners in all buildings. • Clean and sanitize classrooms, nurseries, offices, sanctuary, and fellowship hall. • Bridges Preschool Classrooms and restrooms must be cleaned daily before 7:00 a.m. • Clean all kitchens, fellowship hall, and bathrooms thoroughly on Mondays after Homeless Ministry on Sunday morning. • Dust furniture, fixtures, and equipment throughout the facility. • Clean windows, mirrors, and glass surfaces. • Empty, replace, and sanitize trash and recycling bins; high-traffic areas may require multiple pickups per day. • On Fridays, clean and ensure readiness of sanctuary, sacristy, overflow, and church offices for Sunday worship. (Remove garbage; wipe and sanitize tables, counters, coffee stations and high-touch surfaces). Room Setup & Event Support • Set up and break down chairs, tables, and room configurations for worship, ministry programs, meetings, and special events. • Perform emergency clean-ups as needed. • Coordinate event and setup needs with church leadership. Grounds & Exterior Care • Clean outdoor walkways and steps daily. Pressure-wash entrances and courtyard as needed. • Remove litter and debris from church grounds. Facility Coordination • Maintain awareness of Family Life Center facility rental and church schedule online and adjust cleaning routines accordingly. • Monitor cleaning supply inventory and request additional materials when needed. • Report maintenance concerns and needed repairs promptly to Pastor and trustees. • Support access for contractors, repair personnel, and vendors. Work Expectations • Regular schedule: 5:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., Monday–Friday. • Flexibility required for evening/weekend events, funerals, special services, or unexpected facility needs. • Hours may be adjusted by the Pastor or SPRC based on church activities. Physical Requirements • Frequent standing, walking, lifting, bending, and climbing. • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs, including tables, chairs, and equipment. Required Qualifications • High school diploma or GED. • Ability to pass a standard background check. • At least one year of custodial or facility care experience is preferred. • Ability to work independently, follow schedules, and manage tasks without direct supervision. • Reliability, good communication skills, and strong attention to detail. Preferred Qualifications • Experience using floor buffing, waxing, and commercial cleaning equipment. • Familiarity with maintaining churches, schools, or community spaces. • Comfort adapting to event-based scheduling and varying room setups. Pay: $16.50 - $18.00 per hour Expected hours: 40 per week Benefits: • Paid time off Work Location: In person
