Build, secure, and maintain Linux, network, and cloud infrastructure while automating tasks, improving monitoring, and documenting systems.
Requires an active Secret clearance, at least 5 years of relevant experience, strong Linux administration, and fundamental networking knowledge.
Company Description We were early to the fight against Ubiquitous Technical Surveillance, and we’ve been pushing the edge ever since. Our mission is to help government and enterprise organizations understand and manage commercial data risks, shape their digital signatures, and operate with confidence in an increasingly complex information landscape. We build and integrate advanced, tech-forward solutions to problems our customers often don’t know they have – until it matters most. We move fast, think critically, and deliver where it counts. What’s in it for you? We work hard and do fun things. You’ll work on high-impact, technically challenging problems alongside a team that values teamwork over competition. Veilant offers a solid work-life balance and flexible remote work options. At Veilant, you’ll work with the most talented software developers, systems engineers, and subject matter experts, building tools and systems that make a real difference. Job Description Build it. Secure it. Make it better. The problem might be DNS. It might be routing, Linux permissions, a firewall rule, or something buried in the virtualization stack. You enjoy figuring out how the pieces fit together, narrowing down the cause, and working with teammates to leave the environment stronger than you found it. Veilant is looking for a Systems Engineer to help build, deploy, secure, and maintain mission focused infrastructure. You will work alongside other experienced engineers across Linux, networking, virtualization, cloud, security, and automation. This role calls for technical curiosity, sound judgment, and follow through. You should be comfortable at the Linux command line, able to investigate and narrow down common issues, and willing to ask questions or bring in the right engineer when you need support. Why You Will Want to Work Here You will join people who enjoy infrastructure, solving difficult problems, and sharing what they know. You will also have support. Our technical 24x7 Network and Security Operations Center monitors the environment around the clock, helping reduce constant on call pressure and giving engineers more room to focus on improvements, thoughtful changes, and lasting fixes. Choose the laptop that works for you: MacBook, Windows, or Linux. Expect a few friendly opinions about your choice. Outside the technical work, you will find an active board game group, Xbox gamers, and colleagues who enjoy spending time together. We take the mission seriously and value having a life outside work. What You Will Do Your core work will be Linux administration and common network troubleshooting. You will also support infrastructure work across physical, virtualized, and cloud environments alongside the relevant engineers. Deploy and administer Linux systems, primarily Debian and Ubuntu, using established standards and peer review for production deployments; help support a smaller Windows footprint. Support VMware environments alongside the virtualization engineers. Support cloud infrastructure and services alongside the relevant engineers. Investigate common connectivity issues and assist Network Engineering with switches, routers, and firewalls. Assist Network Engineering and Security Operations with secure connectivity changes and investigations. Partner with other teammates who specialize in DevOps, Network Engineering, and Security Operations to harden systems, automate repetitive work, and improve monitoring. Create useful diagrams, build notes, troubleshooting guides, and system documentation. Communicate progress, blockers, and risks clearly so work keeps moving. What Success Looks Like in Your First Six Months You will build an understanding of the environment, own routine work on your assigned systems, and contribute to complex changes with support from experienced engineers. By the end of your first six months, you should be able to: Deploy hardened Linux systems into production using established security and operational standards and peer review. Explain how your assigned systems connect to the broader environment, including their dependencies and operational risks. Contribute to investigations that cross systems, networking, virtualization, cloud, or security, bringing in the relevant engineers as needed. Identify practical opportunities to simplify infrastructure, improve reliability, or strengthen security. Partner with DevOps to automate selected manual or repetitive tasks. Contribute to monitoring and alerting improvements so engineers can detect and investigate problems more effectively. Produce documentation another engineer can use to support and troubleshoot your systems. Qualifications What You Bring Must Haves Active Secret clearance required; Top Secret clearance preferred. 5+ of relevant systems or infrastructure engineering experience, or equivalent hands-on experience. Strong Linux administration skills, including command line troubleshooting. Basic networking knowledge, including TCP/IP, DNS, IP addressing, and common connectivity troubleshooting. The ability to investigate common systems issues, narrow down likely causes, and recognize when to involve another engineer. The ability to manage assigned work, follow through on commitments, and keep teammates informed. Clear written and verbal communication, including practical technical documentation. A collaborative approach to working with other experienced engineers. We are looking for someone who asks useful questions, tests assumptions, and knows when to move quickly and when to slow down and validate a change. Helpful experience (not required) AWS, GCP, or hybrid cloud environments. Ansible, Jenkins, or similar automation tools. Docker, Kubernetes, or related container technologies. VMware ESXi, vSphere, vCenter, or vSAN. Cisco, Juniper, or Fortinet equipment. Routing concepts such as OSPF, VRF, or MPLS. Secure connectivity such as IPsec, OpenVPN, WireGuard, TLS, or MACsec. Secure, classified, or mission focused environments. Exposure to any of these areas is helpful; we do not expect experience in all of them. Strong Linux and networking fundamentals, troubleshooting ability, and the willingness to learn matter. Who Will Enjoy This Role You enjoy infrastructure and want to understand how it works. You have opinions about useful documentation, sensible firewall rules, reliable monitoring, and when a reboot actually solves a problem. You want ownership, room to improve things, and teammates who care about the quality of their work. If that sounds like you, apply today!
