HOW YOU’LL MAKE AN IMPACT ---------------------------------------- As a Senior Backend Engineer – Node.js/TypeScript, you’ll have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact by helping advance the goals of USGBC technology team. In this role, you’ll take ownership of backend development, driving key initiatives such as design, development, and strategy of enterprise-grade Node JS applications, ensuring scalable architecture, high performance, and best practices in backend engineering while mentoring the team and driving innovation in alignment with our mission and strategic goals. You’ll report to the Senior Director of Technology and be part of a collaborative team environment where your contributions will help shape impactful outcomes. You’ll work closely with teams like Frontend and QA teams, and may regularly partner with Product and Design to refine requirements, ensure user-friendly interfaces, align on API contracts, and to validate features. Key Responsibilities * Develop and maintain robust, scalable backend services using Node.js, TypeScript, and NestJS. * Design and implement high-performance APIs (REST and SOAP) for complex enterprise integrations. * Optimize PostgreSQL databases for high availability, performance, and scalability. * Apply advanced design patterns, security best practices, and architectural principles to all solutions. * Collaborate with DevOps, frontend, QA, and product teams to ensure seamless delivery and integration. * Troubleshoot production issues, enhance system reliability, and perform performance tuning. * Lead code reviews, enforce coding standards, and promote best practices via GitHub workflows. * Mentor and guide team members, contributing to technical discussions and strategic decisions. * Integrate external tools and services to extend system functionality and improve performance. * Stay updated on emerging backend technologies, cloud-native tools, and industry trends to drive innovation. * Design and optimize scalable, maintainable, and performant architectural solutions REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS ---------------------------------------- Experience * 5+ years of professional backend development experience with Node.js, TypeScript, and NestJS. * Expertise in designing and scaling RESTful APIs and SOAP services for enterprise systems. * Advanced proficiency in PostgreSQL (including performance tuning, replication, and partitioning). * Strong knowledge of Git workflows, CI/CD pipelines, and code quality best practices. * In-depth understanding of cloud-native architectures and serverless solutions. * Hands-on experience with AWS services (compute, networking, monitoring, storage). * Solid expertise in Kubernetes (deployment, scaling, troubleshooting). * Proven ability to mentor junior and mid-level developers and drive technical decisions. * Experience with Splunk (advanced monitoring, dashboards, alerting). * Familiarity with Spinnaker or similar advanced deployment pipelines. Education * Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field (required) * Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field (preferred but not mandatory) Technology/System(s) * Node.js + NestJS + TypeScript – enterprise-grade backend framework for building scalable REST and SOAP services. * PostgreSQL (with Citus, Patroni, or TimescaleDB) – advanced database scaling, partitioning, replication, and performance tuning. * Swagger / OpenAPI + Postman – API design, testing, and documentation. * GitHub / GitLab + GitHub Actions / Jenkins – version control and automated CI/CD pipelines. * SonarQube + ESLint + Prettier – enforce code quality, static analysis, and best practices. * AWS (EC2, EKS, Lambda, Fargate, S3, RDS, CloudWatch, API Gateway) – core cloud-native and serverless services. * Docker + Kubernetes (EKS) + Helm – containerization, orchestration, and deployment management. * Splunk + Prometheus + Grafana – advanced monitoring, alerting, and observability dashboards. * Spinnaker / ArgoCD – automated deployment pipelines with GitOps support. * Terraform / AWS CDK – infrastructure as code for reproducible and scalable cloud environments. Skills * Expertise in backend development using Node.js, TypeScript, and NestJS, with strong focus on scalable API design (REST & SOAP). * Advanced proficiency in PostgreSQL administration, optimization, and high-availability strategies. * Strong background in CI/CD pipelines, Git workflows, and code quality enforcement. * Hands-on experience with cloud-native and serverless architectures using AWS and Kubernetes. * Proven ability to mentor engineers, lead technical decisions, and drive best practices across teams. Please note that salary negotiations will not extend beyond the top of the internal salary range. Preference is given to candidates in the Eastern Time Zone, though other time zones will be considered. Occasional weekend availability may be required to support critical deployments or resolve urgent production issues.
