Chief of Staff CLASSIFICATION: Exempt, Full-time SCOPE: The Urban League of Portland Director of Fundraising Development will be responsible for developing and implementing the fundraising development plan of the organization. Responsibilities will include the maintenance of present funding sources and relationships, and the identification and establishment of new working relationships with potential donors, private foundations, local, state, and federal agencies, and other sources to leverage new funding. The Director will also be responsible for leading traditional and virtual fundraising events. Working closely with Urban League management staff, the Director will also work with volunteers to plan and implement fundraising strategies, set goals, and achieve results. The Director will maintain and enhance professional expertise in planned giving and implementing strategies, anticipating new opportunities, as well as competition, and the external economic environment. The Director will work with the President, Vice President, and leadership team to develop and implement a comprehensive, strategic, goal-based fundraising plan to meet the annual financial needs of the Urban League of Portland. The organization is seeking a strategic thinker who will leverage the legacy of the organization, its leaders, and our record of ongoing success to expand and diversify our funding base. The ideal candidate will be someone passionate about social- and economic justice, with an entrepreneurial spirit and desire to grow fundraising efforts in an evolving marketplace. This includes donor research and cultivation, with a focus on corporate and private donors, foundation grants, federal- and local contracts, and Internet-based fundraising, direct mail, and special events, both in-person and virtual. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Strategic Fund Development Planning Design and implement a comprehensive strategic fund development plan for increasing unrestricted revenues. The plan must include long-term and short-term timelines and institute measurable objectives so that those staff and volunteers involved in fundraising activities work together productively as a team. Establish a strong working relationship with the president & ceo, vice president, and management team members so that sound fundraising plans, activities and strategies that impact the entire organization are implemented. Maintain thorough knowledge of the Urban League of Portland and the National Urban League, including our missions, history, cultures, and programs. Understand the organization’s current base of financial support and the funding requirements of all segments of the organization, both current and long-term. Participate in professional development to learn best practices and emerging trends. Research and solicit foundation, corporate, and individual philanthropy decision-makers to meet aggressive fundraising goals. Build sustainable streams of funding and prospects from individuals, corporations, and foundations. Lead Grant-Writing Function Lead on project managing complex federal and foundation grant application processes including creating detailed work plans to guide the process, developing and implementing strategies for engaging and aligning potential co-applicants or mandated partners. Managing communications between all stakeholders (internal and external), setting deadlines, and following up to ensure timely completion of tasks. Lead on compiling all documents, forms, and information required in appendices, coordinating relevant team members to write application narratives to ensure consistency across the package. Manage the submission process. Project manage and develop content for foundation and corporate grant applications, including coordinating with various internal- and external stakeholders to craft winning applications, working with the finance and program teams to determine appropriate funding requests, writing and revising application content, and meeting all deadlines to ensure timely submission of materials. Develop content for foundation and corporate grant reports, including gathering content from team members and the Data Specialist, and coordinating with relevant program directors. Lead Donor Engagement Initiatives Share the story of how donor and contract funds impact the local community, region, and state. Work with Data Specialist to highlight connections between philanthropy and positive results for Urban League clients. Work with directors to draft or update communications (one pagers, etc.) on Urban League initiatives for multiple audiences, to engage donors of varied interests and priorities. Advise President and CEO to provide stewardship of current donors, including periodic written reports. Organize appointments for Board Members and staff with foundation officers and other prospects. Arrange site tours and program presentations. Work in concert with the President & CEO to design and implement materials, publications, programs and events that will increase the local, state, and national visibility of the organization's funding needs and support. Oversight of Fundraising Systems and Processes Maintain fundraising schedules, objectives, databases and tracking systems, ensuring objectives are met, plans are implemented, and timely reports are generated. Develop and manage corporate and foundation database tracking systems, and mailing lists, including correspondence and follow-up. Serve as staff support for Board committee(s) that focus and/or support development. Attend necessary meetings and lead special projects as assigned. Perform other duties as assigned. QualificationsEDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Master's or Bachelor's Degree in related field, preferred OR 5 Years of Related Experience, required PLUS 5 (five) or more years proven record of success in the professional environment of philanthropy and fundraising. KNOWLEDGE/ SKILLS/ ABILITIES Nonprofit experience is strongly preferred. Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE), preferred Comfortable with video conferencing and remote office tools. Experience supervising volunteers, and 1 (one) or more junior staff member. Experience working with philanthropy consultants and event contractors, e.g., caterers, video producers, etc. Knowledge of fundraising information sources and fundraising software (i.e., Databank, Chronicle of Philanthropy, etc.) Experience supporting capital campaigns. The position requires a person with terrific energy, talent, and sensitivity. The Director should understand and have a passion for creating social- and economic justice in Oregon and Southwest Washington. Must be a highly ethical person with a demonstrated commitment to the Urban League of Portland’s mission. Strong proactive problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Experience with grant writing and proposal development. Knowledge of fundraising techniques and strategies Knowledge and familiarity with research techniques for prospect fundraising. Ability to work on deadlines in various settings, i.e., remote, work from home, group settings, and in office depending on the demands of the work. Ability to form substantive and productive relationships with people of different religions, races, genders, sexual orientation and other backgrounds. Capable of seeing the big picture, while at the same time able to attend to important details required in a fundraising organization. Ability to work effectively as part of a team and work independently with little supervision. Strong contributor in team environments. The Director should have a sense of humor and high emotional intelligence. Excellent organization and planning skills and ability to prioritize work appropriately. The Candidate must also possess the ability to manage and track multiple projects with self-direction, creativity, and flexibility. The successful candidate will have strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to write and present clear, structured and persuasive proposals to corporate, foundation, and individual donor audiences. High degree of accuracy and attention to detail. Strong working knowledge of general office equipment and computers. Adept with Microsoft Office products including Teams, Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, and preferably Publisher.
