Job Description The Department of Emergency Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a Business Systems Analyst to join their team. The Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Washington seeks a Data Scientist to bridge applied analytics and research innovation within one of the nation’s leading academic medical centers. This position combines methodological rigor with practical problem-solving to advance data-informed improvements in emergency care delivery and population health. This position requires not just technical expertise in applied analytics but also the ability to translate data into meaningful clinical conclusions. This position must be able to interface with other system wide departments such as Epic analysts, BI developers, governance and security teams to ensure data quality and alignment across systems. This role supports both health system operations (50%) and research innovation (50%), providing an ideal environment for a creative, interdisciplinary scientist who thrives at the intersection of clinical data, discovery, and implementation. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Applied Analytics & Operational Insight (50%) Design, execute, and interpret quantitative analyses supporting clinical operations, quality improvement, and population-level initiatives. Develop reproducible analytic pipelines using R, SQL, and Epic data environments (Clarity, Caboodle, SlicerDicer). Create interactive dashboards and compelling data visualizations using Tableau, Power BI, and/or R Shiny. Translate complex analyses into actionable insights for departmental and UW Medicine leadership. Collaborate with Epic analysts, BI developers, governance and security teams to ensure data quality and alignment across systems. Mentor analysts and trainees to strengthen departmental data science capacity. Research Innovation & Scientific Discovery (50%) Lead or co-lead data management and analysis for research projects focused on emergency medicine, public health, and health systems improvement. Pursue and support grant-funded research through methodological design, analytic strategy, and dissemination. Conduct advanced statistical modeling (regression, multilevel, survival, and causal inference). Apply social network, demographic, and spatial analysis to understand patterns in emergency care utilization and outcomes. Contribute to manuscripts, grant applications, and conference presentations. Build partnerships with interdisciplinary teams across UW and external collaborators. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Bachelor’s degree in Sociology, Public Health, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Biomedical/Health Informatics, or related quantitative social science fields. Four years of work experience. Equivalent experience may substitute for degree. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Advanced training in quantitative methods, including regression, causal inference, and multilevel or longitudinal modeling. Proficiency in R or equivalent with demonstrated experience managing and analyzing large-scale health or population data. Experience with data visualization and reproducible research tools (e.g., ggplot2, rmarkdown). Ability to communicate complex analyses clearly to diverse audiences. Record of scholarly productivity in applied human or health-related contexts. Proven success collaborating across disciplinary teams. Demonstrated commitment to understanding and improving the health of the populations served by UW Medicine. Ability to apply population-level and public health frameworks to generate insights that inform clinical care and system performance. Expertise in social or community dynamics and demographic modeling, and geospatial analytics Prior engagement with NIH-funded and/or multi-site research projects. Strong publication record for level of training and contributions to grant proposals or funded projects. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS Ph.D. in Sociology, Public Health, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Biomedical/Health Informatics, or related quantitative social science fields. Experience working in academic health systems, clinical research, or public health informatics. Familiarity with Epic Clarity, Caboodle, or other EHR-based data environments or data warehouses. Experience mentoring students, analysts, or junior analysts/researchers. Research examining intersectional adult health behaviors, substance use, mental health, and/or violence research Prior experience with behavioral health intervention research and implementation science strategies.
