This position is designated as 'mandatory' and, when contacted to report to work, its incumbent is expected to reach the campus as expeditiously as possible using normal precautions as dictated by the adverse weather conditions. Primary Purpose of Position The Spray & Turf Specialist position has critical oversight daily of turf and plant disease care throughout campus. It incorporates all Spray Technician duties, including management of chemical use and storage for the whole of Grounds Department. Tracks the certifications and credentials of all certified applicators on the grounds team, serving as the subject matter expert on all spray topics, (turf, tree and ornamental). Functions as Turf Specialist for all non-playing fields turf campus-wide. Trains and advise grounds employees on proper IPM practices, Ensures uniformity and conducts regular field inspections. Oversees turf quality and plant health campus wide. Advises supervisors and crew leaders on recommended actions to improve turf and plant care as well as chemical usage. Orders and maintains all spray and turf supplies, chemical usage and handling of related state inspections or oversees vendors used for related work. Minimum Education/Experience Required Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from high school or possession of a GED, and one (1) year of experience in the area assigned; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Essential Job Duties • Performs daily oversight of turf and plant disease care throughout Campus. • Performs or oversees all Spray Tech duties, including management of chemical use and storage for the whole Grounds Department. • Tracking the certification and credentials of all certified applicators on the grounds team, serving as the subject matter expert on all spray topics, (turf, tree and ornamental). • Functions as Turf specialist for all non-playing fields turf campus-wide. • Trains, advises, ensures uniformity and conducts regular field inspections. • Oversees turf quality and plant health Campus Wide. • Advises supervisors and crew leaders on recommended actions to improve turf and plant care as well as chemical usage. • Orders and maintains all spray and turf supplies, chemical usage and handling of related state inspections or oversees vendors used for related work. • Oversee the IPM program for chemical use throughout campus, as well as the continuity of turf management throughout Campus. • Fertilize trees, shrubs, flowers and lawn areas following established fertilization program. • Applies chemical spray applications to plant material under the direction of licensed pesticide applicator. • Monitors and train others in the proper application of herbicides or pesticides as necessary. • Mows grass, trim trees and shrubs; remove trash, and remove snow as needed. • Supports the associated grounds and landscaping requirements due to the development of expanded highly maintained landscaped areas of campus. • Maintenance to include: herbicide, fungicide, insecticide, and fertilization treatments which requires licensing & knowledge of materials, elemental horticulture, and the skill to fulfill these duties; weed control, trimming of undergrowth and pruning of trees, rip rap and erosion repair, upkeep of drainage structures and snow and ice removal along walkways and steps. Other Work Responsibilities • Team lead or serve as working supervisor for the upkeep and repair of sidewalks, parking lots, grounds keeping equipment, pools, fountains, fences, planters and benches, other hardscape needs; May supervise lesser skilled employees in duties assigned in absence of supervisor. • Daily tasks may include: litter control, tractor operation, weed eating, edging, blowing, mowing, seeding and fertilizing, installation, watering, irrigation repair, operation of irrigation, pruning, pesticide application, riding mowers, tree removal, operation of backhoe and skid steer, storm clean up and snow removal. • Use hand tools such as shovels, rakes, pruning and regular saws, hedge and brush trimmers and axes, as well as lawnmowers, chain saws, snow blowers and hedge trimmers. May use heavier equipment such as tractors and other vehicles. • Operate machines and equipment such as trucks, tractors, and other gardening and grounds maintenance type equipment. • Perform more advanced grounds operations including but not limited to aerating, over seeding, mowing and fertilizing with specialized equipment. • Use irrigation methods and control systems to adjust the amount of water consumption to reduce waste; apply fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides. • May be required to obtain, mix and transport chemicals and similar products and apply them in the correct amount, and in the correct areas. Must clean the application equipment, and return it to inventory. • Audiometric Testing Coordinator for grounds personnel. • Canada Goose Remediation. • Make minor repairs to lawn mowers, sprayers and other grounds equipment. • Assist the irrigation manager with installation's or repairs as needed. • Assist the arborist with tree work/removal as needed. • Assist the construction crew with any projects as needed. • Assist with the moving of office furniture, and help with special event setups and tear downs. • May require early morning travel in marginal weather conditions and long working hours. • Report to Facilities Management when called to assist with clearing and cleaning of streets, sidewalks, steps and other areas of obstructions, such as snow, ice, trees, etc. during inclement weather, which usually requires overtime hours, weekends, and holidays, and perform other duties assigned by the supervisor. Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education • Professional turf & chemical application experience preferred. • Experience with setup in calibration and maintenance of granular spreaders and turf sprayers. • Effective interpersonal communications skills in both written and verbal needed for the position. • Knowledge and intermediate skills with Google Chrome, Google sheets, Microsoft Word and Excel, computer literate and willingness to learn new programs. • Ability to effectively work/interact in a team environment which will foster an atmosphere of teamwork. Necessary Licenses or Certifications • Where applicable, must be eligible for required certification. • North Carolina pesticide license with Core, Ornamental & Turf, and Aquatic endorsements, or the ability to obtain certification(s) within nine months from the date of hire. • Valid driver's license required. The Building Environmental Supervisor operates assigned vehicles on and/or off campus and is required to possess, maintain, or obtain a valid driver's license upon appointment to the position.
