Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing research-based solutions to enhance produce safety. Located at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with diverse stakeholders to promote safe and sustainable produce production. What You'll Do: - You will conduct applied research to develop innovative produce safety systems and best practices. - You will provide education and outreach to growers, industry professionals, and regulatory agencies. - You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to address produce safety challenges. - You will develop training materials and deliver workshops to improve produce safety knowledge. - You will engage with community partners to promote adoption of safety protocols. - You will contribute to scientific publications and grant proposals to support ongoing research. - You will monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of produce safety interventions. - You will stay current with federal and state regulations related to produce safety. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Sciences, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of experience in produce safety research or extension. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including FSMA Produce Safety Rule. - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for diverse audiences. - Proven ability to develop and deliver educational programs. - Experience in grant writing and scientific publishing. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working with diverse agricultural communities in California. - Familiarity with USDA-ARS research environments. - Skills in data analysis and statistical software. - Multilingual abilities to engage with diverse populations.
