Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing research-based solutions to enhance produce safety. Located at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with diverse partners to promote safe and sustainable produce production. What You'll Do: - You will conduct applied research to develop innovative produce safety systems and best practices. - You will engage with growers, industry stakeholders, and regulatory agencies to disseminate research findings and provide technical assistance. - You will develop and deliver educational programs, workshops, and training sessions focused on produce safety. - You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to address challenges in produce safety and quality. - You will contribute to grant writing and secure funding to support research and extension activities. - You will publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences. - You will advise policymakers and contribute to the development of produce safety regulations and guidelines. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Sciences, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of postdoctoral or professional experience in produce safety research or extension. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage diverse audiences. - Proven ability to secure external funding through grants and contracts. - Experience in interdisciplinary collaboration and stakeholder engagement. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working within cooperative extension systems or agricultural outreach programs. - Familiarity with the USDA-ARS research environment and federal agricultural policies. - Skills in data analysis, GIS, or precision agriculture technologies. - Bilingual abilities, particularly in Spanish, to better serve diverse communities.
