Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing produce safety programs that enhance food safety and public health. Based at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with diverse stakeholders to promote best practices and regulatory compliance in produce safety. What You'll Do: - You will develop and deliver educational programs and resources focused on produce safety systems. - You will conduct applied research to identify and address challenges in produce safety. - You will collaborate with farmers, industry partners, and regulatory agencies to promote safe produce handling and compliance. - You will provide technical assistance and training to growers and agricultural professionals. - You will contribute to the development of policies and guidelines related to produce safety. - You will publish research findings and extension materials to disseminate knowledge. - You will participate in grant writing and secure funding to support produce safety initiatives. - You will engage with community stakeholders to foster awareness and adoption of produce safety practices. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Science, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of experience in produce safety research, extension, or related agricultural fields. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage diverse audiences. - Proven ability to conduct applied research and translate findings into practical applications. - Experience in grant writing and securing research funding. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working with diverse agricultural communities in California. - Familiarity with the USDA-ARS research environment and cooperative extension systems. - Skills in data analysis and use of modern agricultural technologies. - Bilingual abilities, particularly in Spanish, to better serve local communities.
