Job Title: UC Cooperative Extension Specialist - Produce Safety Systems Company Overview: The University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) is a leading institution dedicated to advancing agricultural innovation, sustainability, and community engagement across California. With a strong commitment to research, education, and outreach, UC ANR supports farmers, communities, and stakeholders to improve agricultural practices and food safety. Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing produce safety programs that protect public health and support the agricultural industry. Based at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with researchers, growers, and regulatory agencies to enhance produce safety standards and practices. What You'll Do: - You will develop and lead research and extension programs focused on produce safety systems. - You will collaborate with federal, state, and local agencies to align produce safety initiatives with regulatory requirements. - You will provide training and technical assistance to growers and industry stakeholders on best practices for produce safety. - You will conduct field research and data analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of produce safety interventions. - You will publish research findings and extension materials to disseminate knowledge to the agricultural community. - You will engage with diverse audiences through workshops, seminars, and outreach events. - You will secure funding through grant writing and partnership development to support program goals. - You will contribute to policy development and advocacy efforts related to produce safety. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Sciences, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of experience in produce safety research, extension, or related agricultural fields. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). - Proven ability to conduct applied research and translate findings into practical extension programs. - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with diverse stakeholders. - Experience in grant writing and securing external funding. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working with federal agencies such as USDA or FDA. - Background in microbiology or foodborne pathogen research. - Familiarity with California agriculture and produce supply chains. - Multilingual skills or experience working with diverse cultural communities.
