Job Title: UC Cooperative Extension Specialist - Produce Safety Systems Company Overview: The University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) is a leading institution dedicated to advancing agricultural innovation, sustainability, and community engagement across California. With a strong commitment to research, education, and outreach, UC ANR supports farmers, industry professionals, and communities to improve agricultural practices and food safety. Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing produce safety programs that protect public health and support the agricultural industry. Based at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with diverse stakeholders to enhance produce safety through research, education, and extension activities. What You'll Do: - You will develop and lead research projects focused on produce safety systems and best practices. - You will design and deliver educational programs and workshops for growers, industry professionals, and regulatory agencies. - You will collaborate with federal, state, and local agencies to align produce safety initiatives with regulatory requirements. - You will provide technical assistance and consultation to growers and industry stakeholders to improve produce safety compliance. - You will publish research findings and extension materials to disseminate knowledge widely. - You will engage with community partners to promote awareness and adoption of produce safety practices. - You will contribute to grant writing and securing funding to support produce safety research and outreach. - You will participate in professional organizations and conferences to stay current with industry trends and innovations. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Science, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of experience in produce safety research, extension, or related agricultural fields. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage diverse audiences. - Proven ability to develop and manage research projects and extension programs. - Experience working collaboratively with government agencies, industry, and community partners. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working within Cooperative Extension systems. - Background in microbiology or foodborne pathogen research. - Demonstrated success in securing external funding through grants. - Familiarity with the agricultural landscape of California, particularly the Salinas Valley.
