Job Title: UC Cooperative Extension Specialist - Produce Safety Systems Company Overview: The University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) is a leading institution dedicated to advancing agricultural innovation, sustainability, and community engagement across California. With a strong commitment to research, education, and outreach, UC ANR supports farmers, industry professionals, and communities to improve agricultural practices and food safety. Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing produce safety programs that protect public health and support the agricultural industry. Based at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with diverse stakeholders to enhance produce safety standards and practices. What You'll Do: - You will develop and deliver educational programs and resources focused on produce safety to growers, industry stakeholders, and regulatory agencies. - You will conduct applied research to identify and address challenges in produce safety systems. - You will collaborate with federal, state, and local agencies to align produce safety initiatives with regulatory requirements. - You will provide technical assistance and consultation to growers and industry partners to improve safety practices. - You will engage with community groups and stakeholders to promote awareness and adoption of produce safety measures. - You will publish research findings and extension materials to disseminate knowledge broadly. - You will participate in grant writing and secure funding to support produce safety projects. - You will contribute to the development of policies and guidelines that enhance produce safety standards. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Sciences, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of experience in produce safety research, extension, or related agricultural fields. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage diverse audiences. - Proven ability to conduct applied research and translate findings into practical applications. - Experience working collaboratively with government agencies, industry, and community stakeholders. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working within Cooperative Extension systems. - Background in microbiology or foodborne pathogen research. - Familiarity with California agriculture and produce supply chains. - Demonstrated success in securing external funding through grants.
