Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and delivering research-based solutions to enhance produce safety. Located at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with diverse stakeholders to promote safe agricultural practices and protect public health. What You'll Do: - You will conduct applied research on produce safety systems to address current challenges in the industry. - You will develop and deliver educational programs and materials for growers, processors, and other stakeholders. - You will collaborate with federal, state, and local agencies to align produce safety initiatives. - You will provide technical assistance and consultation to agricultural producers and industry partners. - You will publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at professional conferences. - You will engage with community groups and industry organizations to promote awareness and adoption of best practices. - You will contribute to grant writing and securing funding to support research and extension activities. - You will mentor students and support workforce development in produce safety. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Sciences, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of experience in produce safety research or extension. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for diverse audiences. - Proven ability to develop and deliver educational programs. - Experience in grant writing and managing research projects. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working with federal agencies such as USDA or FDA. - Background in microbiology or foodborne pathogen research. - Established network within the produce industry and extension community. - Bilingual skills, particularly in Spanish.
