Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing produce safety programs that protect public health and enhance the sustainability of California's produce industry. You will collaborate with researchers, growers, and regulatory agencies to translate scientific knowledge into practical solutions. What You'll Do: - You will develop and lead research and extension programs focused on produce safety systems. - You will collaborate with USDA-ARS and other partners to advance produce safety research and outreach. - You will provide training and technical assistance to growers, industry stakeholders, and regulatory agencies. - You will conduct risk assessments and develop best practices for produce safety. - You will publish research findings and extension materials to disseminate knowledge. - You will secure funding through grants and partnerships to support program initiatives. - You will engage with diverse communities to promote produce safety awareness and adoption. - You will participate in statewide and national produce safety networks and committees. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Sciences, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of experience in produce safety research or extension. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including FSMA Produce Safety Rule. - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for diverse stakeholder engagement. - Proven ability to secure and manage research funding. - Experience working collaboratively with government agencies and industry partners. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working within USDA-ARS or similar federal research institutions. - Background in microbiology or foodborne pathogen risk assessment. - Bilingual skills, particularly in Spanish, to engage with diverse grower communities. - Experience with data analysis and GIS applications related to agricultural systems.
