Job Title: UC Cooperative Extension Specialist - Produce Safety Systems Company Overview: The University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) is a leading institution dedicated to advancing agricultural innovation, sustainability, and community engagement across California. Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing research-based solutions to enhance produce safety. Located at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with diverse stakeholders to promote safe and sustainable produce production. What You'll Do: - You will conduct applied research to develop innovative produce safety systems and best practices. - You will engage with growers, industry partners, and regulatory agencies to disseminate research findings and provide technical assistance. - You will design and deliver educational programs and workshops to improve produce safety awareness and compliance. - You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to address challenges in produce safety and develop integrated solutions. - You will contribute to grant writing and secure funding to support research and extension activities. - You will publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences. - You will advise policymakers and contribute to the development of produce safety regulations and guidelines. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Science, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of experience in produce safety research or extension. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). - Proven ability to conduct applied research and translate findings into practical solutions. - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage diverse audiences. - Experience in grant writing and securing research funding. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working with the USDA or other federal agencies. - Familiarity with the Salinas Valley agricultural community and produce industry. - Multilingual skills, particularly Spanish, to effectively communicate with diverse grower populations. - Background in integrated pest management or sustainable agriculture practices.
