Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing research-based solutions to enhance produce safety. Located at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with diverse stakeholders to promote best practices and compliance with safety regulations. What You'll Do: - You will conduct applied research on produce safety systems to address current challenges in the industry. - You will develop and deliver educational programs and materials for growers, processors, and other stakeholders. - You will collaborate with federal, state, and local agencies to align extension efforts with regulatory requirements. - You will engage with the agricultural community to promote adoption of innovative safety practices. - You will publish research findings in scientific journals and present at conferences. - You will provide technical assistance and consultation to industry partners and policymakers. - You will secure funding through grants and partnerships to support ongoing research and outreach. - You will mentor students and extension staff to build capacity in produce safety. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Sciences, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of experience in produce safety research or extension. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including FSMA Produce Safety Rule. - Proven ability to conduct applied research and translate findings into practical applications. - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for diverse audiences. - Experience in grant writing and securing research funding. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working with federal agencies such as USDA or FDA. - Background in microbiology or foodborne pathogen research. - Established network within the California produce industry. - Fluency in Spanish to engage with diverse agricultural communities.
