Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and delivering research-based solutions to enhance produce safety. Located at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with diverse stakeholders to promote best practices and compliance with safety standards. What You'll Do: - You will conduct applied research to develop innovative produce safety systems tailored to California's agricultural needs. - You will engage with growers, industry partners, and regulatory agencies to disseminate research findings and provide technical assistance. - You will design and deliver educational programs and workshops to improve produce safety awareness and practices. - You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to address challenges in produce safety and develop integrated solutions. - You will contribute to grant writing and secure funding to support ongoing research and extension activities. - You will publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences. - You will advise policymakers and stakeholders on produce safety regulations and best practices. - You will mentor students and junior researchers to foster the next generation of experts in produce safety. What You Bring: - You have a Ph.D. in Plant Sciences, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - You possess at least 3 years of postdoctoral or professional experience in produce safety or related agricultural systems. - You have strong expertise in produce safety regulations, risk assessment, and mitigation strategies. - You demonstrate excellent communication skills for diverse audiences, including growers, scientists, and policymakers. - You have a proven track record of securing research funding and publishing scientific work. - You are skilled in designing and implementing extension programs and educational outreach. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working within cooperative extension systems or agricultural outreach programs. - Knowledge of California's produce industry and regulatory environment. - Proficiency in data analysis software and geographic information systems (GIS). - Experience mentoring students and managing multidisciplinary research projects.
