Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing produce safety programs that enhance food safety standards and practices. Located at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with diverse stakeholders to promote safe produce production and handling. What You'll Do: - You will develop and deliver educational programs and resources focused on produce safety systems. - You will conduct applied research to identify and address produce safety challenges. - You will collaborate with farmers, industry partners, and regulatory agencies to promote best practices. - You will provide technical assistance and training to growers and agricultural professionals. - You will contribute to the development of policies and guidelines related to produce safety. - You will publish research findings and extension materials to disseminate knowledge. - You will participate in grant writing and secure funding to support produce safety initiatives. - You will engage with community stakeholders to foster awareness and adoption of safety practices. What You Bring: - You have a Ph.D. in Plant Sciences, Food Safety, Agricultural Sciences, or a related field. - You possess at least 3 years of experience in produce safety research or extension. - You have strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). - You demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills for diverse audiences. - You are proficient in designing and conducting applied research and extension programs. - You have experience collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams and stakeholders. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working within cooperative extension systems or agricultural outreach. - Familiarity with the Salinas Valley agricultural community and its unique challenges. - Proven success in securing competitive grants and managing funded projects. - Skills in data analysis and use of modern research technologies.
