Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing research-based solutions to enhance produce safety. Located at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with diverse stakeholders to promote best practices and regulatory compliance in produce safety. What You'll Do: - You will conduct applied research to develop innovative produce safety systems tailored to California’s agricultural landscape. - You will provide education and outreach to growers, industry professionals, and regulatory agencies on produce safety standards and practices. - You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to address challenges related to food safety and public health. - You will develop training materials, workshops, and extension programs to disseminate research findings effectively. - You will engage with local communities and stakeholders to foster adoption of produce safety innovations. - You will contribute to grant writing and securing funding to support ongoing research and extension activities. - You will publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences. - You will advise policymakers and industry leaders on produce safety regulations and best practices. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Sciences, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of postdoctoral or professional experience in produce safety research or extension. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including FSMA (Food Safety Modernization Act). - Proven experience in designing and conducting applied research projects. - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective outreach and collaboration. - Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working with diverse agricultural communities in California. - Background in developing digital tools or technologies for produce safety. - Established network with regulatory agencies and industry stakeholders. - Experience in grant writing and managing funded research projects.
