Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing produce safety programs that protect public health and support the agricultural community. Based at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with researchers, growers, and regulatory agencies to enhance produce safety standards. What You'll Do: - You will develop and deliver educational programs and resources focused on produce safety to growers, industry stakeholders, and regulatory bodies. - You will conduct applied research to identify and mitigate risks associated with produce safety. - You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to design and implement innovative produce safety systems. - You will provide expert consultation and technical assistance to farmers and agricultural professionals. - You will engage with community partners to promote best practices and compliance with safety regulations. - You will contribute to scientific publications, grant proposals, and extension materials. - You will participate in outreach activities, workshops, and conferences to disseminate knowledge. - You will monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of produce safety programs and recommend improvements. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Sciences, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of experience in produce safety, food safety systems, or agricultural extension. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including FDA Produce Safety Rule and Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). - Proven ability to conduct applied research and translate findings into practical extension programs. - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective stakeholder engagement. - Experience working with diverse agricultural communities and regulatory agencies. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working within USDA or similar federal agricultural research centers. - Background in microbiology or foodborne pathogen risk assessment. - Demonstrated success in securing competitive research funding. - Bilingual skills, particularly in Spanish, to engage with diverse grower communities.
