Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing research-based solutions to enhance produce safety. Located at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with diverse stakeholders to promote safe and sustainable produce production. What You'll Do: - You will conduct applied research to develop innovative produce safety systems and best practices. - You will provide education and outreach to growers, industry professionals, and regulatory agencies. - You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to address produce safety challenges. - You will develop training materials and deliver workshops to enhance knowledge and compliance. - You will engage with community partners to promote sustainable and safe agricultural practices. - You will publish research findings in scientific journals and present at conferences. - You will assist in securing funding through grant writing and partnership development. - You will contribute to policy development related to produce safety standards. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Sciences, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of experience in produce safety research or extension work. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including FSMA Produce Safety Rule. - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective outreach and collaboration. - Proven ability to conduct independent research and publish results. - Experience in grant writing and securing research funding. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working with diverse agricultural communities in California. - Familiarity with USDA-ARS research environments and cooperative extension systems. - Skills in data analysis and use of modern agricultural technologies. - Bilingual abilities, particularly in Spanish, to engage with local growers.
