Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a pivotal role in developing and implementing produce safety programs that protect public health and enhance agricultural practices. Based at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with growers, researchers, and regulatory agencies to promote safe and sustainable produce production. What You'll Do: - You will develop and deliver educational programs and resources focused on produce safety to growers and industry stakeholders. - You will conduct applied research to identify and address produce safety challenges in California’s agricultural systems. - You will collaborate with federal, state, and local agencies to align produce safety initiatives with regulatory requirements. - You will provide technical assistance and consultation to growers to implement best practices in produce safety. - You will engage with diverse communities to promote awareness and adoption of produce safety standards. - You will publish research findings and extension materials to disseminate knowledge broadly. - You will participate in grant writing and secure funding to support produce safety projects. - You will contribute to interdisciplinary teams to integrate produce safety with broader agricultural sustainability goals. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Science, Food Safety, Agricultural Science, or a related field. - At least 3 years of experience in produce safety research, extension, or related agricultural fields. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). - Proven ability to develop and deliver educational programs and workshops. - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage diverse audiences. - Experience in grant writing and managing funded projects. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working directly with produce growers and agricultural communities in California. - Familiarity with USDA-ARS research programs and collaboration. - Multilingual abilities to communicate with diverse populations. - Background in interdisciplinary research integrating food safety with environmental or economic aspects.
