Job Title: UC Cooperative Extension Specialist - Produce Safety Systems Company Overview: The University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) is a leading institution dedicated to advancing agricultural innovation, sustainability, and community engagement across California. With a strong commitment to research, education, and outreach, UC ANR supports farmers, industry professionals, and communities to improve agricultural practices and food safety. Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing produce safety programs that protect public health and support the agricultural industry. Based at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with researchers, growers, and regulatory agencies to enhance produce safety standards and practices. What You'll Do: - You will develop and deliver educational programs and resources focused on produce safety systems. - You will conduct applied research to identify and address produce safety challenges. - You will collaborate with stakeholders including farmers, industry experts, and government agencies to promote best practices. - You will provide technical assistance and training to growers and agricultural professionals. - You will contribute to policy development and regulatory compliance related to produce safety. - You will publish research findings and extension materials to disseminate knowledge. - You will participate in grant writing and secure funding to support produce safety initiatives. - You will engage with diverse communities to ensure inclusive outreach and education. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Science, Food Safety, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. - At least 3 years of experience in produce safety research, extension, or related agricultural fields. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including FDA Produce Safety Rule. - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective stakeholder engagement. - Proven ability to conduct applied research and translate findings into practical applications. - Experience in grant writing and securing research funding. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working with diverse agricultural communities in California. - Familiarity with USDA-ARS research programs and collaboration. - Background in food microbiology or postharvest technology. - Bilingual skills, particularly in Spanish, to enhance community outreach.
