Role Overview: As a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist in Produce Safety Systems, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing produce safety programs that protect public health and support the agricultural community. Based at the USDA-ARS Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Center in Salinas, CA, you will collaborate with researchers, growers, and regulatory agencies to enhance produce safety standards and practices. What You'll Do: - You will develop and deliver educational programs and resources focused on produce safety to growers, industry stakeholders, and regulatory bodies. - You will conduct applied research to identify and address produce safety challenges in California’s agricultural systems. - You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to design and implement produce safety interventions and best practices. - You will provide technical assistance and guidance to growers and industry partners to ensure compliance with safety regulations. - You will engage with community stakeholders to promote awareness and adoption of produce safety measures. - You will contribute to the preparation of grant proposals, reports, and scientific publications related to produce safety. - You will participate in state and national produce safety initiatives and policy development. - You will mentor students and extension personnel to build capacity in produce safety systems. What You Bring: - A Ph.D. in Plant Science, Food Safety, Agricultural Science, or a related field. - At least 3 years of experience in produce safety research, extension, or related agricultural fields. - Strong knowledge of produce safety regulations, including the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). - Proven ability to conduct applied research and translate findings into practical extension programs. - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage diverse audiences. - Experience working collaboratively with growers, researchers, and regulatory agencies. Bonus Points If You Have: - Experience working within cooperative extension systems. - Familiarity with the agricultural landscape of California, particularly the Salinas Valley. - Background in microbiology or foodborne pathogen research. - Demonstrated success in securing grant funding and managing research projects.
